SC, Durham University ink MoU to advance Islamic capital market education
In a statement today, the SC said the inaugural ICM Summer School is one of the collaborations under this MoU, jointly organised with the Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance, Durham University Business School.
SC chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi said the ICM Summer School is a milestone in cultivating visionary leaders for the future of Islamic finance, driven by a shared commitment to advancing capacity and thought leadership across the industry, from practitioners to seasoned scholars.
"By embedding Maqasid al-Shariah principles, we aim to build an ethical, sustainable, and innovative capital market. Our partnership with Durham University equips professionals to reinforce Malaysia's global leadership in Islamic finance.
''The SC aims for Maqasid al-Shariah to serve as a strategic differentiator, driving innovation and collaboration among regulatory bodies and Islamic industry players worldwide,'' he said.
Mohammad Faiz also said that the initiative reflects a strong commitment to advancing the values outlined in the Maqasid al-Shariah Islamic Capital Market Guidance introduced by the SC in 2023.
The SC said the ICM Summer School programme will run from 2025 to 2027, with one cohort annually, with the inaugural group of 15 participants commencing a month-long hybrid programme in the third quarter of 2025.
It said the advanced executive programme is designed for mid- to senior-level professionals and leaders in the Islamic finance industry, with a minimum of five years' relevant working experience.
Upon completing intensive online modules, SC said participants will attend a five-day masterclass at Durham University and, upon successful completion of the programme, will receive joint certification from the SC and Durham University.
The curriculum will cover key areas including Sukuk, Islamic equities, Shariah-compliant products, fintech, sustainability, regulatory frameworks, and product innovation, with a central focus on applying Maqasid Al-Shariah principles to promote ethical, inclusive, and sustainable Islamic capital market and finance practices. - Bernama

'The church does more than offer spiritual support. It contributes to family building, community cohesion, and the cultivation of ethics and values. 'These are the pillars of a strong and caring society,' said Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman. The charity event was held to raise funds for a van recently acquired by the church to support its ministry and outreach activities. Commending the initiative, Lee described it as a noble effort that reflects the spirit of cooperation and empathy among the local community. He said the Sarawak government's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) supports such community-driven efforts, as the state aspires to build not just an economically resilient society, but one that is also socially and morally grounded. Lee also highlighted the vital role of the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) in supporting non-Islamic religious institutions across the state. He noted that RM110 million has been allocated under Unifor this year to assist with infrastructure upgrades and other support services for non-Muslim communities. 'Sarawak is the only state in Malaysia to consistently allocate significant annual funding to support religious diversity. This reflects our commitment to inclusion and mutual respect,' he said. On a related note, Lee pledged continued support for community initiatives and said his office had received several requests from the church, which he would carefully consider to determine how best to assist. He also voiced his support for the church's aspiration to establish a permanent facility that could double as a community activity centre, benefitting the wider public. 'This is not just about building infrastructure – it's about building stronger community ties,' he added. Lee also called on all Mirians to play their part in nurturing a caring and united society based on love, support, and mutual respect. During the event, he announced an allocation of RM5,000 for the church's activities, as well as RM10,000 to assist with financing the newly purchased van. The programme also saw the presentation of food baskets to senior members of the BEM congregation. Short-term rates seen steady next week on BNM operations
SHORT-TERM interbank rates are expected to remain steady next week, underpinned by Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) continued operations to absorb excess liquidity from the financial system. This week, the central bank intervened daily by conducting reverse repo tenders, overnight reverse repo tenders, and Islamic reverse repo tenders to reduce excess funds in the financial system. On a weekly basis, surplus liquidity in the conventional system declined to RM20.30 billion from RM23 billion last Friday. In the Islamic system, surplus liquidity rose to RM33.69 billion from RM27.90 billion previously. The Malaysia Islamic Overnight Rate (MYOR-i) stood at 2.75 per cent as of July 10, 2025. — BERNAMA

Govt allocates RM50 mln to maintain non-Islamic places of worship

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the initiative, introduced under the 2025 Budget, aims to ensure that temples, churches and similar sites remain well-maintained and comfortable for worshippers. Speaking at a grant presentation ceremony at the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia in Petagas, Nga said that as of July 7, RM2.7 million had been approved for 15 RIBI organisations in Sabah, with several other applications still under review. 'I understand that several applications are still being processed and I hope more will be submitted,' he said, adding that the ministry approved RM4.81 million last year for 35 RIBI nationwide to carry out similar works. Nga reaffirmed the government's commitment to preserving Malaysia's multi-faith society, assuring that the initiative would be implemented in a professional, efficient and transparent manner. 'No one will be left behind. The goal is to ensure these funds are distributed fairly and equitably to those who need them the most,' he said. – Bernama
