Planetary waves amplifying wild weather have tripled, scientists say

Climate change has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather in the last 75 years, a new study has found. It may explain why long-range computer forecasts keep underestimating the surge in killer heatwaves, droughts and floods.
In the 1950s, Earth averaged about one extreme weather-inducing planetary wave event a summer, but now it is getting about three per summer, according to the study in Monday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal.
Planetary waves are connected to 2021's deadly and unprecedented Pacific Northwest heat wave, the 2010 Russian heatwave and Pakistan flooding and the 2003 killer European heatwave, the study said.
'If you're trying to visualise the planetary waves in the northern hemisphere, the easiest way to visualise them is on the weather map to look at the waviness in the jet stream as depicted on the weather map,' said study co-author Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist.
Planetary waves flow across Earth all the time, but sometimes they get amplified, becoming stronger, and the jet stream gets wavier with bigger hills and valleys, Mann said. It's called quasi-resonant amplification or QRA.
This essentially means the wave gets stuck for weeks on end, locked in place. As a result, some places get seemingly endless rain while others endure oppressive heat with no relief.
'A classic pattern would be like a high pressure out west (in the United States) and a low pressure back East and in summer 2018, that's exactly what we had,' Mann said. 'We had that configuration locked in place for like a month. So they (in the West) got the heat, the drought and the wildfires. We (in the East) got the excessive rainfall.'
'It's deep and it's persistent,' Mann said. 'You accumulate the rain for days on end or the ground is getting baked for days on end.'
The study finds this is happening more often because of human-caused climate change, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels, specifically because the Arctic warms three to four times faster than the rest of the world.
That means the temperature difference between the tropics and the Arctic is now much smaller than it used to be and that weakens the jet streams and the waves, making them more likely to get locked in place, Mann said.
'This study shines a light on yet another way human activities are disrupting the climate system that will come back to bite us all with more unprecedented and destructive summer weather events,' said Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center who wasn't involved in the research.
'Wave resonance does appear to be one reason for worsening summer extremes. On top of general warming and increased evaporation, it piles on an intermittent fluctuation in the jet stream that keeps weather systems from moving eastward as they normally would, making persistent heat, drought, and heavy rains more likely,' Francis said.
This is different than Francis' research on the jet stream and the polar vortex that induces winter extremes, said Mann.
There's also a natural connection. After an El Nino, a natural warming of the central Pacific that alters weather patterns worldwide, the next summer tends to be prone to more of these amplified QRA waves that become locked in place, Mann said.
And since the summer of 2024 featured an El Nino, this summer will likely be more prone to this type of stuck jet stream, according to Mann.
While scientists have long predicted that as the world warms there will be more extremes, the increase has been much higher than what was expected, especially by computer model simulations, Mann and Francis said.
That's because the models 'are not capturing this one vital mechanism,' Mann said.
Unless society stops pumping more greenhouse gases in the air, 'we can expect multiple factors to worsen summer extremes,' Francis said. 'Heatwaves will last longer, grow larger and get hotter. Worsening droughts will destroy more agriculture.'
Spain is preparing for an unusually warm summer, hot on the heels of a record-breaking May.
In an update on Friday, national weather agency AEMET said there is a 60 per cent chance the country will be hotter than average from June through to August.
It follows searing temperatures at the end of last month, when the mercury climbed to 40.7C at the airports of Córdoba and Seville, and 37.5C in Zaragoza. Temperatures on 30 May averaged 24.08C - the highest reading for May since records began in 1950.
There is no doubt, as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned before, that 'human-caused greenhouse gas emissions have led to an increased frequency and intensity of temperature extremes'.
The last three summers have been Spain's hottest on record - and summer 2025 looks set to continue that trend.
The likelihood of a warmer than usual summer rises to 70 per cent along Spain's Mediterranean coast and the Balearic and Canary Islands.
The eastern coast - including Barcelona, Valencia, and the Balearics - is expected to experience frequent 'tropical nights', with temperatures failing to drop below 20C, and many consecutive days above 35C.
AEMET has issued several orange‑level warnings for heat today (17 June), including in Córdoba and Seville countryside - where temperatures could hit 41C - and Vegas del Guadiana in Extremadura.
The average June high for Seville and Córdoba is around 33C, Lars Lowinski, a meteorologist at WetterOnline and Weather and Radar, points out.
'While these parts of Spain are used to summer heatwaves, it is part of an increasing trend of hot spells developing earlier during the season while also becoming more intense/longer-lasting, something that can clearly be attributed to climate change,' he tells Euronews Green.
To help people prepare for its increasingly hot summers, last year Spain's Ministry of Health released a new map with more detailed heat alerts. It breaks the country down from 52 provincial areas into 182 meteosalud (or metro health) zones, providing a colour-based warning system for each.
The hyper-local heat alerts range from Green or no risk through to Red or high risk to health and life. Alongside a colour, these alerts come with information about sun exposure, hydration and symptoms of heat-related illness. There is even an English language version of the official heat alert website, to help alert tourists, students and newly arrived residents to the risk.
This year, Spain's annual heat plan supplements the new meteosalud areas with a guide advising different administrations, health professionals and citizens when intense heat strikes. It follows a study from the Carlos III Health Institute, which determined the threshold for heatwaves in these different areas, taking into account variables like heat-related deaths.
Every heatwave in the world is now made stronger and more likely to happen because of human-caused climate change, World Weather Attribution (WWA) states.
This is borne out by numerous previous analyses - including one that found extreme heat felt in Spain and Portugal in April 2023 would have been almost impossible without human-caused climate change.
2024 was the warmest year on record and the first calendar year where the global temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Carbon dioxide is the biggest contributor to global warming; its concentration in the atmosphere exceeded 430 parts per million (ppm) last month.
As average temperatures rise, the amount of weather at the 'extremely hot' end of the spectrum increases, making extreme heat events more frequent, longer, and more intense.
The heatwave impacting Spain this week is also likely to build into France, the southern UK, parts of Germany and Switzerland, particularly from Saturday, Lowinski says.
Paris could see up to 37C early next week, while 33 or 34C are possible in London.

Europe is in for a long, hot summer – and with it, a swarm of mosquitoes. The insects are more than just pesky. Some mosquito species carry illnesses such as Zika, West Nile virus, dengue, and chikungunya – and outbreaks of these diseases, typically found in tropical and subtropical climates, are becoming more common in Europe as a result of increased travel and warmer weather driven by climate change. Last year, there were 1,436 cases of West Nile virus and 304 dengue infections acquired in Europe, up from 201 the previous two years combined, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Italy made up 238 of those dengue cases, the largest outbreak the bloc has ever seen. This may be another record-breaking year. France already has seven active outbreaks of chikungunya this summer, which the ECDC said indicates the mosquito season started earlier than usual. 'It's an exponential curve,' Jan Semenza, an environmental epidemiologist at Umeå University in Sweden, told Euronews Health. Dengue can spread easily because most infected people have no or mild symptoms, but it can cause severe illness and death. The most common symptoms are fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Chikungunya is rarely fatal, but it can cause similar symptoms to dengue as well as debilitating joint pain that can last months or even years. Semenza and other scientists believe these diseases could soon become endemic in Europe. One recent study found that if a new mosquito species arrived in a European country in the 1990s, it would take about 25 years for a major outbreak to occur. Now, it's under five years. 'That time span has collapsed dramatically,' Semenza said. Outbreaks in Europe are still small compared to the rest of the globe. So far in 2025, there have been more than three million dengue cases and 220,000 chikungunya cases worldwide. More than 1,400 people have died from dengue and there have been 80 chikungunya deaths worldwide. But other vector-borne diseases could soon emerge as public health threats, as well. The mosquito species that spreads yellow fever, once eliminated in Europe, has reappeared in Cyprus. 'We are very concerned that Europe could potentially be invaded by this aggressive mosquito,' Semenza said. What can be done to combat mosquito-borne diseases? Semenza said that while it's impossible to eliminate mosquitoes altogether, governments can do more to prevent them from spreading disease. They could, for example, boost surveillance in hotter southern European countries during the summer, particularly around airports and other transit hubs where people might unknowingly bring viruses in. 'We want to make sure that if a passenger arrives from a dengue-active area, that if that person has the virus in [their] blood, we would like to isolate that individual as quickly as possible to make sure that he or she doesn't get bitten by a mosquito, because then you have these larger outbreaks,' Semenza said. Spain is taking some steps to minimise the risks. People can submit photos of mosquitoes to an app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify the species and issue an alert if it hasn't been detected in that area before. Regional health authorities can then take steps to prevent infections. This 'citizen science' programme has helped officials identify invasive Asian tiger mosquitoes, which can carry dengue and chikungunya viruses, in 156 municipalities since 2023, according to the Spanish health ministry. Meanwhile, the ECDC said people can take steps to minimise their own risks from mosquitoes , including using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and trousers at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Travellers returning from countries where these viruses are endemic – most parts of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean – should maintain these precautions for at least three weeks after their return to Europe to prevent mosquitoes from biting them and spreading any viruses locally, the agency said. Other climate scientists say European countries grappling with the reemergence of mosquito-borne diseases should take lessons from regions where they have long been endemic, such as sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Americas. 'In Europe, it's definitely a seasonal disease,' Semenza said. 'But we see the season expanding, and we'll see more and more cases'.

A strain of bird flu that has jumped from animals to people in the United States could find its way to Europe, EU scientists have warned in a new report. EU-US trade of 'raw milk' products and wild bird movement appear to be the biggest risks, according to the analysis from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Avian influenza has been spreading at higher levels worldwide over the past five years, including in wild birds and poultry farms in Europe. The virus has occasionally jumped from birds into mammals, including foxes, mink, and cats. European officials are also concerned about an H5N1 bird flu outbreak among US dairy cows that spilled to people last year, infecting 70 and killing one. There is no evidence of person-to-person transmission, and the US strain has not been detected in the EU. But health experts fear that left unchecked, the virus could evolve to the point where it spreads more easily between people, raising the risk of a broader outbreak. 'Avian influenza viruses pose an increasing threat, with the potential to adapt to humans and trigger future pandemics,' Andrea Gervelmeyer, a scientific officer with EFSA's animal health team, told Euronews Health. That, Gervelmeyer added, is a 'major concern for global health'. For the new report, EFSA analysed all the possible ways the US bird flu strain could make its way into the EU. One risk is that as wild birds migrate in the coming months, they could bring H5N1 with them. The virus might be detected first in key European stopovers such as Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, western parts of Scandinavia, and major wetlands on the coasts of Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. EFSA scientists also scrutinised trade between the EU and US. Imports of 'raw' milk, cheese, or other dairy products pose a 'potential risk for virus introduction into the EU,' they said. Raw milk products may be properly labelled or pasteurised, a process that kills bacteria and viruses such as avian influenza. That means dairy exports from parts of the US hit hard by the outbreak could be riskier. Since 2023, the EU has imported 889 tonnes of milk and cream and 10 tonnes of fresh cheese from the US that 'may not have undergone sufficient thermal treatment' to kill the virus, EFSA said. The EU also imports about 20,000 tonnes of beef from the US every year. But strict trade rules and limited presence of the virus in meat mean that while it is theoretically possible the bird flu strain could enter Europe that way, it's not likely, EFSA said. Scientists also do not believe that US exports of chicken, poultry, or bull semen – of which the EU has imported nearly 85,000 kilograms since 2023 – are likely to cause bird flu outbreaks in Europe. However, there is still some 'uncertainty' around data from the US, the agency said, and it will keep monitoring bird flu threats and issue recommendations to keep the US strain from entering the EU. For now, Gervelmeyer said the risk assessment should help to boost 'preparedness measures to protect public health in Europe'.

Stefan Oelrich, president of Bayer's pharmaceutical division and newly appointed head of the EU's pharmaceutical lobby EFPIA, pointed out the urgent need for capital market reform to support biotech development in Europe. 'We need the equivalent of a Nasdaq in Europe where we can raise capital for biotech. Because biotech is not just about government finance,' Oelrich said during a press conference last week. Launched in 1971, the Nasdaq (originally the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) was the world's first electronic stock market. Known for its fully electronic trading model, the exchange has historically been attractive to fast-growing sectors, including life science, listing some of the world's largest tech companies, including Apple, Microsoft, and Google. Oelrich argued that Europe must urgently develop a similar equity-driven financing ecosystem. 'Today, there is very limited venture capital available, which is largely due to the way we manage equities. We invest our equities not in venture, but elsewhere,' he said. According to him, the lack of early-stage capital means European biotech innovations often migrate elsewhere — especially to the US, where funding and commercialisation opportunities are more robust. 'The transition from basic research to patented applications tends to follow where the capital is. We must ensure that innovation generated in European universities and research institutions stays in Europe,' he warned. 'Why don't we do it?' His remarks came just ahead of the unveiling of the EU's long-awaited Life Sciences Strategy, which aims to revive Europe's position as a hub for biotech research and development. The strategy acknowledges that the gap in venture capital investment is widening in Europe. It points to the continent's fragmented capital markets and heavy reliance on bank loans, which are often limited in volume and duration, as major structural issues. The strategy also recommends strengthening innovation hubs and integrating them into value chains to better attract private investment. However, it does not place significant emphasis on completing the EU's Capital Markets Union (CMU), a key demand from Oelrich. 'This may sound ambitious, but it's absolutely doable. Interestingly, everyone I talk to recognises the need: So why aren't we acting on it?' Oelrich asked. He also suggested that part of Europe's pension and life insurance capital could be redirected toward venture investment if appropriate political frameworks were put in place. 'Inventions can find a market here as it's not only about a lack of capital in Europe: It's about how we allocate it. We need to do a better job,' he concluded. The broader context The EU's Capital Markets Union remains incomplete, with progress hindered by regulatory divergence, inconsistent enforcement, and political resistance to deeper integration. While the CMU does not directly aim to create new stock exchanges, it does support efforts to expand access to capital, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This improved access could encourage the development of specialised or regional exchanges, though the broader goal remains integration rather than fragmentation. Currently, Europe lacks sector-specific stock exchanges. Major platforms like Euronext, the London Stock Exchange, Deutsche Börse, Nasdaq Nordic, and SIX Swiss Exchange list companies across a wide range of industries. Instead of dedicated exchanges, sector-focused investment is facilitated through indices such as the STOXX Europe 600 family, which tracks sectors like banking, automotive, and leisure. Still, for many in the biotech sector, the absence of a specialised capital-raising platform remains a barrier. Whether the EU will — and can — move to address this remains to be seen.
