Sam Hain's second highly-skilled innings of the match left Warwickshire well-placed to press for victory over Worcestershire in the County Championship derby at Visit Worcestershire New Road.
Hain followed his first innings 86 with an unbeaten 87 (174 balls) as Warwickshire took their second innings to 280 to set the home side 327 to win.
Chris Woakes supported Hain with 42, during which he passed 10,000 runs in all formats, while Jacob Duffy took 5-75.
Worcestershire closed the third day on 54-2 and face a huge batting challenge on the final day when they must make much the biggest score of the match to win it.
Warwickshire resumed on the third morning day on 53-1, already 99 ahead, and soon lost Tom Latham who edged an aggressive shot at Tom Taylor to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick.
Rob Yates eked out a valuable 29 from 112 balls before falling lbw, hit on the back pad, by Ben Allison. Beau Webster paid the price for going on the back foot on a pitch sometimes keeping low when Duffy flattened his leg stump.
That was 86-4 and Worcestershire were clawing their way back into the match but the excellent Hain unfurled his second crucial innings of the contest and received important support from the middle and lower orders.
Ed Barnard (30) added impetus before top-edging Matthew Waite to third man. Zen Malik helped Hain add 30 and, after he sliced Duffy to point and Kai Smith pulled Allison to long leg, Woakes arrived – not a bad player to have coming in at nine.
The eighth-wicket pair added 67 in 21 overs, lifting Worcestershire's target over 300, before Woakes edged Taylor to slip. Duffy completed his five-for with wickets from successive balls when Ethan Bamber hit his wicket from the follow through from a pull and Chris Rushworth edged to slip.
Rushworth wasted no time before inflicting damage with the ball when he knocked out Jake Libby's off-stump with an out-swinger. Six balls later, Henry Nicholls copped a tough lbw decision when he appeared to be struck outside the line of off-stump by Woakes.
That was 25-2 and, with 27 overs left in the day Warwickshire fancied their chances of making match-clinching inroads before stumps. Batting remained a serious test of concentration and technique but Roderick and Kashif Ali negotiated 12 overs before bad light lopped off the last 15.
An intriguing final day beckons with an additional factor from some rain in the forecast. Warwickshire remain strong favourites to bank a win which would owe most to Hain whose high-class batting in this match was worthy of two centuries.

Hometown pride for Lionesses ahead of final
Friends and fans in the Warwickshire hometowns of football stars Jess Carter and Hannah Hampton have spoken of their pride at the Lioness' success. Carter took her first steps in football with Warwick Juniors as a six-year-old and those who watched it happen said she stood out instantly. "She just shone, she had to play against the quality players of West Bromwich Albion, and Coventry City FC and was superb, " said Dean Brandrick, a coach for Warwick Juniors. He added: "At the end of her career with us she won the county cup, she was just above anybody at that time." Mr Brandrick coached Carter until she left for Birmingham City and they have remained in contact. He described how seeing her being presented with a cap to mark her 50th appearance was a proud moment. "Tremendous achievement for her, from being a grassroots footballer for so long, she's achieved everything I think possible," the coach said. In Studley, where goalkeeper Hampton grew up, pride is evident as specially knitted postbox toppers have lined the village. Monica Smith, of Spotty Pots Pottery Painting, told the BBC: "She came from Studley, she's played here, she's part of the fabric of this little village. "There's a lot of buzz around, we've got lots of flags in shops, people are talking about it and we are just so proud of them all and so excited to see what happens on Sunday." Zen Malik and Beau Webster impress as Warwickshire see off Worcestershire
Zen Malik and Beau Webster both scored centuries as Warwickshire chased down 393 – the third-highest target in their history – to beat Worcestershire by five wickets in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship. Needing 338 with eight wickets in hand at the start of the day Malik scored a career-best 142 with Australian Webster hitting an unbeaten 100 off 166 balls. Dan Mousley chipped in with 69 before Kai Smith (48 off 40) joined Webster to see the hosts home with almost 14 overs to spare to leave bottom side Worcestershire staring at relegation. Essex inflicted Sussex's first championship defeat at Hove since May 2022 after wrapping up only their second victory of the season inside 25 minutes on the final day. The home side began play needing another 55 just to make Essex bat again and while James Coles got the single he needed for his third consecutive century there was little else to cheer as they were bowled out for 261 to lose by an innings and 39 runs. Top two Surrey and Nottinghamshire both had to settle for draws, at Yorkshire and Hampshire respectively. Dom Bess, captaining Yorkshire in the absence of Jonny Bairstow after partner Megan went into labour in the early hours, finished with seven for 162 as the visitors were bowled out for 537 at Scarborough, a first innings lead of just 20. Yorkshire were 120 for five when time was called and slipped into the bottom two after the draw. Nottinghamshire are just a point behind the leaders after Felix Organ scored a first-class high of 122 not out to ensure Hampshire avoided the follow-on. The hosts finished on 454 all out, 124 behind, and that just left Nottinghamshire duo Haseeb Hameed and Freddie McCann to score unbeaten half-centuries on their way to 108 for one before the end. England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed finished with seven for 93, and 13 wickets in the match, as the hosts were dismissed for 256. Second-placed Glamorgan kept up the chase with a five-wicket win at home to struggling Kent after Kiran Carlson scored an unbeaten 89 in a successful pursuit of 189, the hosts knocking off the remaining 164 required for the loss of only three further wickets. England spinner Tom Hartley claimed five for 99 – and match figures of 11 for 215 – as Lancashire beat Gloucestershire by nine wickets with five overs to spare at Cheltenham. Following-on at 98 without loss Hartley took advantage of a helpful pitch to leave the visitors needing 110 from 26 overs and an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 103 between Keaton Jennings (57no) and Josh Bohannon saw them home. Middlesex boosted their hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon with an innings and 107-run victory over Northamptonshire. The visitors began the day 64 for three following-on and despite battling Rob Keogh's unbeaten 61 made in nine minutes short of five hours they could not stave off defeat.

Captain Carlson guides Glamorgan to win over Kent

With the Welsh side set 189 to win and resuming on 25-2, a tense final day was in prospect at Sophia Gardens, particularly when nightwatchman James Harris fell to Matt Parkinson. But captain Kiran Carlson steadied Glamorgan with a fluent unbeaten 89, playing some punchy shots to lift his team's run rate and turn what could have been a tricky chase into a comfortable stroll to victory. Carlson was well supported by Billy Root, who was stumped off Parkinson's bowling for a swift 30, while Colin Ingram chipped in with a similarly brisk 27. Ingram was out lbw to Parkinson, who picked up four second-innings wickets to go with his four from the first, in the first ball after lunch. Ben Kellaway then joined Carlson at the crease, and it was the Glamorgan skipper who hit the winning runs in the south Wales sunshine. Glamorgan's fourth County Championship win of the season lifts them from third to second in the Division Two table, overtaking Derbyshire, who are set to lose at home to leaders Leicestershire.
