Former La Vergne PTO president indicted for stealing organization money
A release from the comptroller said investigators determined former PTO President Valency Horton misappropriated PTO funds totaling at least $13,130.99 between April and July 2024.
The comptroller's office said Horton made unauthorized money transfers from the PTO to her personal Cash App account and used the funds to make personal purchases and allegedly pay individuals to whom she owed money.

She also made two unauthorized ATM withdrawals and an over-the-counter cash withdrawal of PTO funds, the office said in a release. One of the ATM withdrawals was made inside an out-of-state casino.
Per the comptroller's report, the Cash App transfers totaled $10,225, while the ATM and over-the-counter withdrawals totaled $2,905.99.
During an interview with investigators, Horton reportedly stated she used the PTO funds for her personal benefit, though she did pay some of it back. Despite paying back some of the organization money, the comptroller's office said she still owes $11,130.99 to the PTO.
The Rutherford County Grand Jury handed down an indictment for Horton charged her with one count of theft of property over $10,000, one count of violation of the Computer Crimes Act, and one count of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card.

'It is important that school support organizations, like PTOs, have more than one person approve transactions to help prevent fraud,' Tennessee Comptroller Jason Mumpower said. 'PTO officials should also regularly review and reconcile their bank statements to ensure that money is being spent properly. A copy of the bank statements should be included in the minutes of PTO meetings.'

Kilmar Abrego Garcia could be released from custody Wednesday
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A federal judge could decide to release Kilmar Abrego Garcia from jail Wednesday to await trial on human smuggling charges. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, 29, was deported to a prison in El Salvador in March and was brought back to the U.S. to face charges of human smuggling following a Tennessee traffic stop. He's accused of conspiring to bring undocumented migrants to the U.S. from around 2016 to 2025. The charges stem from a traffic stop by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in Putnam County in 2022. Body camera video shows officers discussing among themselves their suspicions of human smuggling before letting Abrego Garcia go free. On Wednesday, prosecutors are expected to have a homeland security agent provide testimony about the traffic stop. The judge is expected to then rule on whether Abrego Garcia should be released while he awaits trial. Immigration officials have said they would immediately detain him and begin deportation proceedings. A federal judge in Maryland scolded the Trump administration Friday for its refusal to detail its deportation plans for Abrego Garcia, including where the government plans to send him and whether he'll get a chance to fight his expulsion. The administration argues Abrego Garcia is a danger to the community and can be deported before his trial to a country other than El Salvador. An U.S. immigration official said Thursday Mexico and South Sudan could be willing to accept him. Abrego Garcia has reportedly lived and worked in Maryland for more than a decade, working construction and raising a family. His American wife is suing the administration over his wrongful deportation in Maryland. The hearing is expected to begin at 1 p.m.

Sheriff: Scammers falsely claiming to represent bonding company
Special to the American Press Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory is warning residents of a scam that is resurfacing in tje area involving scammers falsely claiming to represent a bonding company. The scammer contacts family members of incarcerated individuals claiming they can pay a lesser amount to bond their family member out of jail. The caller may provide a local address and phone number in an attempt to look legitimate. The caller may ask the victim to pay the fee using cryptocurrency or money transfer services, such as Zelle or Cash App. This is a scam. Sheriff wants to remind residents of a few tips to use to avoid becoming the victims of a scam: Resist the pressure to make an immediate decision. Verify any information by independently looking up the business and contacting them. Never send money based on a request made over the phone or in an e-mail. Trust your instincts, if something doesn't sound right hang up and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement. If you believe you have fallen victim to this scam, please contact the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office at 491-3605.

1 injured after shooting on Gallatin Pike in Madison
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One person was hurt after a shooting early Sunday morning in Madison, according to officials. The incident was reported at 6:40 a.m. in the 800 block of Gallatin Pike South. The investigation was later moved to the 1500 block of Gallatin Pike South. One person was reportedly injured and taken to an area hospital for treatment.
