Daily Record24-05-2025

The newest Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K offers faster performance, sharper visuals, and smart features for just £39.99
With smart streaming devices becoming household staples, the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (newest generation) stands out for its improved speed, picture quality, and smart features, all packed into a compact device. Whether you're looking to upgrade your streaming setup or cut down on the clutter of set-top boxes, this Fire Stick delivers impressive performance for its price.
Available now on Amazon for £39.99, this is a 33% discount from its original price of £59.99. The device has earned an impressive 4.7 out of 5 stars from over 18,000 reviews, suggesting it's more than just a budget-friendly upgrade.

The Fire TV Stick 4K supports Wi-Fi 6 for smoother streaming, even in busy households, and features a 1.7GHz processor that makes it over 25% more powerful than the first-gen Fire TV Stick 4K.

It includes 2GB RAM, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos for a more cinematic experience.
It's also the only streaming media player with the Xbox app, letting you stream games like Forza Motorsport or Starfield via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, no console needed.
With the Alexa Voice Remote, users can easily launch apps, control playback, and even manage smart home devices like lights or cameras.

There's also quick access to apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video (subscription fees may apply). Despite its powerful performance, the stick tucks neatly out of sight behind your TV.
If you're after alternatives, the Roku Stick 4K is a close contender. It's available at Argos for £44.99, with an optional 10% off using code RED10, and has a 4.7-star rating from 343 reviews.

Another option is the Google TV 4K Streamer, which retails for £99 and offers 4.6 stars from over 5,700 reviews.
But if it's the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K you're after, you're not alone, it's earned glowing feedback from thousands of users.
One buyer said: 'It is so simple to set up and does most of it, itself. I have never had this much of a quality picture on my 4K TV, I am gobsmacked.'

But another was left frustrated: 'We couldn't get any connection to any HDMI ports… very disappointed to say the least.'

Another user wrote: 'It's really fast, no lag and has all the channels... sound just connects to my soundbar and you can control the TV and sound from the small remote which is great.'

In contrast, one customer criticised a design flaw: 'Absolutely ridiculous… such a short power lead. Now I have to source my own 2m cable… ruined the product for me.'
One more reviewer was impressed, saying: 'The Wi-Fi connection is instant... the volume and voice control are great, I was amazed what you can actually get on a firestick…. so totally recommend this.'
Still, the Fire TV Stick 4K remains a top choice for many looking for a streamlined, powerful streaming solution.

BREAKING NEWS Canada brutally hits back at Trump's tariffs ultimatum with huge hike that could cripple struggling US industry

After President Donald Trump shut down all trade talks with Canada, the country retaliated by hiking duties on American steel imports. Canada imposed an import quota late Friday and if it is exceeded, certain American steel sent to the country will face a new 50 percent surcharge. Canada's Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said the government was acting to protect domestic industry from 'unjust US tariffs,' NBC News reported. The response came hours after Trump posted on Truth Social about how Canada is a 'very difficult country to trade with.' His reason for suspending trade negotiations came down to a tax Canada is set to impose on major tech companies starting Monday. 'Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,' Trump wrote, adding that the levy 'is a direct and blatant attack on our Country.' Last week, the finance minister said he would not delay the implementation of the digital services tax, which applies to any firm making more than $15 million from Canadian internet users. The three percent tax will strike at the heart of American companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb. Canada's response came hours after President Donald Trump made this post criticizing the country for levying a usage tax on American tech companies And because the tax is retroactive back to 2022, one tech lobbying group said American firms will soon have to pay up to $3 billion directly into Canada's treasury. Canada has not ruled out further action to strike back at Trump for ending negotiations, with the government saying it 'remains prepared to take additional steps as needed.' How Canada's hike on US steel imports will affect the industry, which has been struggling for years, is yet to be seen. US Steel Corporation, once one of the most valuable companies in the world, just merged with Japan's Nippon Steel earlier this month after years of declining sales. Canada remains the second largest trading partner of the US, despite all the trade turmoil. Right now, the US has 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports that aren't covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the trade deal Trump signed in his first term. Canadian energy is exempt from the 25 percent rate but is still tariffed at 10 percent, as are most products that have entered the US since early April. Canada is also hugely impacted by Trump's 50 percent tax on steel and aluminum imports, as the country is largest foreign supplier of those materials to the US. Canada's steel industry has laid off a staggering 1,000 workers since the first US tariffs in March, Reuters reported. It has also been impacted by the 25 percent duties Trump has levied on foreign-made vehicles and parts. This comes as the US rapidly approaches Trump's July 9 deadline to renegotiate trade with countries around the world so they can avoid so-called reciprocal tariffs. Trump first announced the reciprocal tariffs on April 2, which he dubbed 'Liberation Day.' More than 60 countries were hit with import charges of as much as 50 percent. The announcement from the White House led to widespread market panic and falling bond values, which led to Trump enacting a 90-day pause on April 9. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said early Friday that the pause could be extended to Labor Day - and that country-by-country tariffs could be negotiated down in that time. Hours later, Trump echoed a similar sentiment. He said the initial July 9 deadline was not set in stone and could shortened or extended.

At the heart of the expansion are four new fulfilment centres – including confirmed sites in Hull and Northampton – which will bring at least 4,000 new roles by 2026. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Two more large-scale warehouse facilities are planned for the East Midlands in 2027, likely adding thousands more jobs, though the exact locations remain under wraps. But this isn't just about warehouses. Amazon's investment, which spans the next three years, also includes billions in data infrastructure, cutting-edge technologies like drones and robotics, improvements to staff wages and benefits, and a major upgrade to its London headquarters in Shoreditch. (Photo:) | Getty Images The scale and spread of the spending signals a new chapter in Amazon's UK strategy – one that aligns with the government's 'levelling up' agenda and sends a strong message to global investors: Britain, post-Brexit and amid political change, is still a key destination for innovation and growth. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it a 'massive vote of confidence in the UK,' while Chancellor Rachel Reeves described it as a 'powerful endorsement of Britain's economic strengths.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasised the company's commitment to reaching every corner of the UK. He said: 'When Amazon invests, it's not only in London and the South East – we're bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.' What does it mean for the UK economy? With more than 75,000 already on its payroll, Amazon is one of the UK's largest private sector employers. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad This new injection of funding not only strengthens its logistics network but also helps build long-term regional resilience by introducing high-tech jobs, skills training, and digital infrastructure in under-served areas. For Hull, Northampton, and the East Midlands, it means more than just jobs – it could mark the beginning of a deeper transformation, bringing global tech investment into areas historically overlooked. As the UK economy seeks stable ground and sustainable growth, this investment could provide a much-needed anchor. Are you struggling to make ends meet as costs continue to rise?
