To put it in simple terms, self-healing skin 'is a next-gen smart material that enables aircraft to detect, contain, and repair minor damage while still in flight'. This self-healing technology works on the dynamics of biology and nanotechnology and it further includes microcapsules filled with repair agents, shape-memory polymers, and self-sensing fiber composites. For instance, if the wing gets scraped by a projectile or a panel cracks under stress, these materials react instantly, sealing the damage on their own, thus protecting the aircraft's stealth and aerodynamics. It also keeps it in mission mode without needing immediate maintenance. What are features of Tempest?
It might sound absurd but the Tempest is being fabricated as a 'combat brain' in the sky with thousands of sensors embedded across the airframe that will feed real-time data to its on-board Artificial Intelligence system. This AI will act like a virtual co-pilot, guiding the pilot and but detecting structural damage while on the flight.
If any damage is detected, Tempest's body can trigger repairs automatically using embedded smart materials that restore strength and stealth properties without any human intervention.
The self-healing materials in Tempest are being developed by the UK's BAE Systems, alongside academic researchers and materials science labs across Europe. When is Tempest to be launched?
The first flight of the sixth-generation fighter aircraft Tempest is expected before 2035. Right now it is under development in the United Kingdom for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It will replace the Eurofighter Typhoon. It is being developed as part of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme by a consortium known as Team Tempest, which includes the Ministry of Defence, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, the UK subsidiary of Leonardo, and MBDA UK.

U.K. Royal Air Force team lands in Kerala to repair grounded F-35B

After weeks-long speculation and uncertainty, the Royal Air Force aircraft carrying an expert team of engineers from the U.K. touched down at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport at 12.46 p.m. on Sunday (July 6, 2025) to repair the grounded F-35B of the Royal Air Force in Thiruvananthapuram. The combat jet of the U.K. remained grounded at the airport since June 14 after it made an emergency landing following technical glitches. According to the flight data details, the flight that left RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, in the U.K., the largest RAF Station with approximately 5,800 service personnel, on Friday (July 4, 2025) reached the military base of RAF Akrotiri on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus on the same day. It later took off from Akrotiri on Saturday (July 5, 2025) and landed at Seeb International Airport on the same day. The aircraft then began its journey to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport from Muscat on Sunday morning and landed here at 12.46 p.m. According to sources, the team comprises around 17 engineers from the U.K. and the U.S. where the manufacturer Lockheed Martin is based. The Royal Air Force aircraft that brought the expert team to Kerala will return by evening. The team will stay here a few days exploring the possibility of repairing the grounded aircraft here. They will explore the possibility of fixing the engineering issues of the aircraft at the place where it is stationed now (bay number four of the domestic terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport). If it doesn't work, they would consider the aircraft being towed to the hangar facility of the airport. Dismantling the tail and wings of the aircraft and airlifting the aircraft back to the U.K. or to the U.S. would be considered only if the first two options do not work. The team will hold an inspection of the aircraft by Sunday (July 6, 2025). A final call on the options to be adopted will be taken only after this inspection, said the sources. The continued grounding of the aircraft has created a sensation in India with the aircraft inviting wide media attention and subsequent speculation on its future. The U.K. authorities had been maintaining that they were hopeful of the aircraft being taken to the active service of the Royal Air Force once the maintenance and repair of the aircraft is completed in Kerala, along with the mandatory safety checks. However, the delay in the arrival of the expert team led to speculation and a meme sensation on social media. The aircraft made an emergency landing following adverse weather conditions in the Indian Ocean. However, the aircraft had serious engineering issues that couldn't be fixed by the crew.

By Anne Kauranen HELSINKI: Italy's Leonardo will buy a 24.55% stake in Finland's SSH to expand its cybersecurity business, the companies said on Tuesday, in a sign of some progress in European defence consolidation and cooperation. The deal will see the Italian aerospace and defence group become SSH's biggest shareholder, highlighting Leonardo's belief that cybersecurity has become essential to the interconnected multi-domain warfare systems it develops. SSH's chief executive Rami Raulas said the Western defence industry was turning away from national protectionism towards more international cooperation, and that Leonardo's stake was part of that trend. Raulas said large defence groups had begun to establish joint ventures to share costs and risks in projects such as the new combat jet being developed by Britain's BAE Systems, Japan's Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement and Leonardo. "The geopolitical situation and concerns over U.S. investments will further promote this 'European for Europeans' thinking," he told Reuters, alluding to U.S. President Donald Trump's view that the U.S. should be less involved in European defence. Leonardo, which made 18 billion euros ($21.2 billion) in revenue last year, sees double-digit percentage growth in cybersecurity business in the coming years. "The digital and cybersecurity portion will be more embedded in (defence) platforms and will be an increasing portion of the global security offering," Leonardo's head of M&A Giuseppe Panizzardi told a conference call, adding it was fundamental for the company to have the core cyber security technology at hand. The deal, subject to conditions, involves SSH issuing 20 million euros of shares to Leonardo. After completion, SSH's current top investor, Accendo Capital, will hold a 20.87% stake. SSH offers technologies including quantum-safe encryption . The deal is a significant step towards the development of a "Made in Europe" Zero Trust ecosystem , Leonardo said, referring to a cyber security approach in which all users are viewed as potential risks.
