"A visionary who transformed the country's economic condition": YS Reddy pays tribute to Narasimha Rao on his birth anniversary
Amaravathi (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 28 (ANI): YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao on his 104th birth anniversary.
Former Andhra Chief Minister Reddy remembered Bharat Ratna PV Narasimha Rao as a visionary leader who revolutionised India's economic landscape through his reforms.
In an X post, the Reddy wrote, 'The visionary who transformed the country's economic condition with reforms, Bharat Ratna PV Narasimha Rao. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of PV, who provided numerous remarkable services to the nation as India's first Telugu Prime Minister, we pay our tributes.'
Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was posthumously conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, by President Droupadi Murmu on March 30, 2024.
Born on June 28, 1921, in Karimnagar, Telangana, as an agriculturist and an advocate, Narasimha Rao entered politics and held several important portfolios. He served as the Minister of Law and Information, 1962-64; Law and Endowments, 1964-67; Health and Medicine, 1967; and Education, 1968-71, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Rao, the ninth Prime Minister of India, assumed office in June 1991 and stayed in power till May 1996. He is credited with bringing many economic reforms to the country, particularly for dismantling the License Raj.
Rao took over the post of Home Minister on July 19, 1984, and was re-appointed to this post, with the additional charge of the Ministry of Planning, on November 5, 1984.
He was appointed as the Minister of Defence from December 31, 1984, to September 25, 1985. On September 25, 1985, he took over as the Minister of Human Resource Development.
He was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1971 to 1973 and General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee from 1975 to 1976. (ANI)

Minister instructs Karnataka's transport department to cancel auto permits, book cases for illegal fare charges
Bengaluru: Almost two weeks after public anguish over the exorbitant rise in auto fares following the ban on bike-taxi operations in the state, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy Saturday instructed the transport commissioner to take action against ride-hailing mobile apps and regular autos if they are found charging illegal fares. Ramalinga Reddy told TOI he himself has received complaints from the public over auto drivers and aggregators charging exorbitant fares. The letter addressed to the transport commissioner states that on June 18, 2025, the ride-hailing mobile app Rapido was charging Rs 100.9 per km. "This kind of daylight robbery is unpardonable and strict action should be taken," the letter states. Reddy cited ride-hailing apps as the reason for exorbitant fares being charged. "A majority of auto drivers have attached their vehicles with ride-hailing apps. These apps, instead of following fare rules of the govt, are charging higher auto fares and other fees," he said, adding: "Enforcement staff will identify irregularities and take action. No auto drivers should collect more fare from passenger." On the trending hashtag, the minister said, "We've acted against bike-taxi operations as per the high court order. On social media, people do make comments about the decision taken by authorities, I don't have much to say about that. Earlier, bike-taxi operations were illegally operated. It is to say that the state govt does not support illegal operations." "When customers street hail an auto, the driver should charge the fare as fixed by the regional transport authority. Ride-hailing apps can charge a 10% service tax in addition to the fares fixed by RTA. Other fees and charges on customers are illegal. " As per the last revision in 2022, RTA has fixed Rs 30 for the first 2km and Rs 15 per km thereafter Multiple fees make commuting expensive Ever since bike-taxis were banned in the city, mobile apps and auto drivers have been fleecing the general public without any regard for rules. In addition to paying a digital tip to lure auto drivers to accept the booking, the customers are forced to pay a congestion charge, pick-up fee, driver additional fee, and others. The digital tip just to book an auto ranges from Rs 10 to Rs 100. If a customer agrees to pay a lesser amount of tip, then a message pops up suggesting more tip to get an auto booked. Urban mobility expert Satya Arikutharam said, "It is basically unethical to force a passenger to pay a certain amount of tip while booking an auto. Usually, a customer pays the tip voluntarily after the delivery of the service; this is the custom everybody is accustomed to. What is happening here in the name of innovation is that aggregators are trying to become cheeky and creative. When I spoke to the drivers, they were unaware that aggregators are asking for the tip in their name. Union minister Pralhad Joshi has referred the case of advancing tipping to central consumer protection authority (CCPA) for investigation." He added aggregators not complying with the high court orders on charging fares for mobile-app-based services is a matter of concern.

"Trying to shield the accused": BJP demands resignation of Mamata Banerjee over Kolkata gangrape case
New Delhi, [India], June 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched an all-out attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal over the alleged gangrape incident, with the party demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday, June 25. Kolkata police has formed a five-member Special team to investigate the alleged gangrape of a law student in Kolkata. BJP leader Gourav Vallabh told ANI, 'What is the relationship between the gang rape accused and the TMC? Why do accused often emerge as members of the TMC party? In this case, the accused is also found to be a member of TMC. All of this is happening when the West Bengal Chief Minister is a woman... I believe Bengal has now become synonymous with anarchy, corruption, and nepotism. I strongly demand that a government that fails to protect its women must be dismissed. It is disgraceful to see MPs standing with the accused, claiming it was a matter of friendship or asking 'what should we do.' The police have arrested three persons, including the main accused, and a five-member Special team has been formed to investigate the incident. Kolkata Police Chief Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal told ANI, 'We are investigating his (Guard of the Law College, Pinaki Banerjee) role in the alleged court has granted his police custody till July 1...' The main accused, Manojit Mishra, and his accomplices, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, have been remanded to police custody till July 1. The BJP has set up a four-member fact-finding committee to investigate the case. BJP MP Sambit Patra made the announcement while addressing a press conference in the National Capital on Saturday. 'BJP President JP Nadda has formed a committee, and that committee will visit the spot and investigate. Its members are former Union Ministers Satpal Singh, Meenakshi Lekhi and MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra. This committee will soon visit the spot and submit its report to the National President,' he said. Patra demanded that Mamata Banerjee apologise and resign as the Chief Minister. 'We are not asking for clarification from Mamata Banerjee. We are asking her to apologise and resign,' Patra said. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was detained on Saturday while protesting against the gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. "We are feeling very proud": Parents of Group Captain Shukla on his interaction with PM Modi
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 28 (ANI): Parents of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to set foot on the International Space Station (ISS), expressed immense pride and gratitude following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction with their son on Saturday evening. The Group Captain's parents shared their emotions after witnessing the conversation, which highlighted Shubhanshu's role in Axiom Mission 4 and his representation of India in space. Asha Shukla, the mother of the Group Captain, stated that they felt 'very good' after the PM conveyed his best wishes to her son for the mission. 'We felt very good as PM Modi extended best wishes to my son and also took a lot of information from him regarding space... He took gajar ka halwa and moong dal ka halwa along with him to space... We are feeling very proud,' she said. Shambhu Dayal Shukla, the father of the Group Captain, echoed his wife's sentiments, noting that it was a moment of pride for the parents. 'We felt very good as PM Modi blessed and motivated him... This is a moment of pride for us... We thank PM Modi and the entire nation for extending best wishes to my son,' he stated. Union Minister for Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh also lauded the Group Captain Shukla's interaction with PM Modi stating, 'PM Sh Narendra Modi 's conversation with Shubhanshu Shukla has not only energised the entire crew onboard International Space Station #ISS, but is also a huge motivation for the entire Team #ISRO,' in a post on X. Earlier, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, during his interaction with the PM, said that India looks 'very big and grand' from Space. 'Jab pehli baar Bharat ko dekha, Bharat sach mein bohat bhavya dikta hain, jitna ham map pe dekhten hain, usse kahin jyada bada (When we saw India for the first time, we saw that India looks very grand, very big, much bigger than what we see on the map),' Group Captain Shukla said during his interaction Speaking aboard the ISS, Group Captain Shukla also said that it looks from space that no borders exist on Earth. 'The first view was of the Earth and after seeing the Earth from outside, the first thought and the first thing that came to mind was that the Earth looks completely one, no border is visible from outside. When we see the Earth from outside, it seems that no border exists, no state exists, and no countries exist. We all are part of humanity, and the Earth is our one home, and all of us are in it,' he said. Captain Shukla, who is the second Indian to reach Space, said he feels very proud as India has reached the International Space Station, and it is a collective achievement of the country. He said he is feeling very emotional and happy after the conversation with PM Modi. He also urged youth to work hard and never stop trying and said, 'the sky is never the limit.' Group Captain Shukla said Indian scientists have prepared seven unique experiments for the mission. 'I can say with great pride that for the first time Indian scientists have prepared seven unique experiments which I have brought here to the station. The first experiment, which is scheduled today, is on stem cells... My experiment focuses on how we can prevent or delay muscle loss in space by taking a specific supplement. We will also see if these supplements can be beneficial for older people on Earth as well,' he said. PM Modi also congratulated Group Captain Shukla for hoisting the Tricolour in space and said, 'While you are away from our motherland, you are the closest to the hearts of Indians.' 'Today, you are away from our motherland, but you are the closest to the hearts of Indians... Aapke naam mein bhi shubh hai aur aapki yatra naye yug ka shubharambh bhi hai,' PM Modi said. Group Captain Shukla is serving as Mission Pilot on the four-member Axiom Mission 4, which launched aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and docked with the ISS on Thursday. Axiom 4 mission aboard the Dragon spacecraft successfully docked at the ISS on Thursday, ahead of schedule, autonomously docking at 4:05 pm (IST) to the space-facing port of the space station's Harmony module. The Ax-4 crew was welcomed by the seven-member Expedition 73 team at the ISS and took part in a safety briefing. Former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, ESA (European Space Agency) astronauts Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary are part of the crew for the Axiom 4 mission. The astronauts plan to spend about two weeks aboard the orbiting laboratory, conducting a mission comprised of science, outreach, and commercial activities. (ANI)
