
Prices for heavy load-ready Ford Ranger Super Duty released, but not for SA market
While only set to go on-sale next year, Ford has revealed the previously unknown powertrain details of the first-ever Ranger Super Duty, as well as the newcomer's price tag in Australia.
Shown in April as not only the most work-focused Ranger ever made, but the first non-F-Series to wear the Super Duty name, the newcomer slots-in between the 'regular' Ranger and F-150 in the Blue Oval's bakkie line-up, albeit only Down Under for now.
The differences
Described as a 'purpose-built truck designed for heavy-duty use', the Super Duty will initially be offered as a chassis cab in single, Super and double cab body styles and, as its description states, without the fitting of a factory loadbox.
A traditional Australian-style steel tray can, however, be added as an optional extra.
As depicted by the April launch model though, a factory loadbin-equipped Super Duty will be offered, but only later in the year and solely for the double cab with the XLT trim designation being applied.
Compared to the standard Ranger, the Super Duty's exterior changes consist of a steel front bumper, a new grille, wider wheel arches, a new bonnet complete with Super Duty lettering, wider mirrors, a standard snorkel and a steel underbody protection bashplate.
Underneath, the Super Duty sports a strengthened chassis, revised suspension, a long range 130-litre fuel tank and unique 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tyres.
Hardcore fundamentals
Known by now to have a tow rating of 4 500 kg, a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4 500 kg and gross combined mass (GCM) of over 8 000 kg, new information confirms a wading depth of 850 mm versus the normal Ranger's 800 mm, as well as the following payload ratings:
• single cab chassis cab: 1 982 kg;
• SuperCab chassis cab: 1 896 kg
• double cab chassis cab: 1 825 kg
Differing further is the ground clearance ratings at 299 mm for the single, 297 mm for the SuperCab and 295 mm for the double cab.
Detuned V6
Besides the only interior change being an on-board scale display integrated into the 12-inch SYNC 4A infotainment system, as well as the Super Duty script on the passenger's side of the dashboard, up front, Ford has made the 3.0-litre Lion turbodiesel V6 available as the sole engine option, but in detuned form.
Reported in April as the only option considered for the Super Duty, the unit now produces the same 154 kW as the bi-turbo 2.0-litre Panther engine instead of its regular 184 kW, but retains the same 600 Nm torque figure.
As per usual, the only transmission option is the 10-speed automatic co-developed with General Motors.
Price hint
On the colour front, five hues have been made available: Arctic White, Command Grey, Shadow Black, Aluminium Silver and the Super Duty-exclusive Seismic Tan. A sixth, Traction Green, will added at a later stage.
With the mentioned double cab-only XLT to arrive later, the three-model Super Duty range, as with the standard Aussie-market Ranger, will be produced in Thailand rather than at the Silverton Plant outside Pretoria, where the South African-spec Ranger is made.
As such, no plans are currently in place to bring the Ranger Super Duty to market soon.

Our Ford Transit Custom Sport earns its stripes
It's mostly been weather for ducks here in the Western Cape. While these winter showers bode well for the approaching summer (no bathing in waterless hand cleaner like we did in 2016) it makes everyday commuting a stressful affair. Not because of the infrastructure — the road network is light years better than what you experience in Joburg, with drainage that works and visible road markings — but because of the drivers. Cape Town motorists, even at the best of times, are not renowned for their vehicular helmsmanship, so when you introduce howling winds and squalls of sideways rain, most four-wheeled journeys become a sketchy game of Russian roulette. I have learnt to keep my driving to a minimum until the clouds dissipate and that sweet winter sun makes an appearance. Last weekend it did and, suffering from a mild case of cabin fever, I decided to hop into the Ford Transit Custom Sport that's been languishing in my driveway and go for a jaunt. Good thing I did too, because on start-up the digital instrument cluster informed me the van's 12V battery was in a low state of charge (this cold weather is tough on cells). Then, a few kilometres later, another warning flashed up alerting me that the DPF was clogged up and that I should keep on driving to initiate the 'cleaning process'. So I did. When it was finished I kept on going and soon found myself heading in the direction of Franschhoek. Usually this part of the world is best experienced behind the wheel of a grossly overpowered, decidingly antisocial two-door performance car and not a hulking great panel van. But then I remembered the Custom Sport has GT stripes running down its bonnet like a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and my impostor syndrome quickly subsided. After cruising through the little town's tourist-packed main road I hooked a short left, engaged 'Sport' mode and headed towards the summit of what has to be the Western Cape's most popular mountain pass. On the ascent, Ford's 2.0l engine makes another strong case for itself with ample torque delivery and willingness to rev. While a lot of turbodiesels kind of lose interest once you push past their torque peak, this one is more than obliging to clatter all the way up to its red line should you feel so inclined. It's meshed to an eight-speed automatic transmission that does a good enough job when left to its own devices but is also equipped with a manual override feature allowing you to take full control. Actuated by twisting the end of the right steering column stalk forward (up) or back (down), this helps with engine braking and also lets you carry a gear through a set of sweepers — something that assists with stability as your momentum isn't disrupted by the van's electronic brain suddenly moving up or down a cog. Keep it in fifth, for example, and it stays there while you can focus on your line. The Custom Sport's light electric power steering is great when threading through city environs but on the tighter, more technical portions of Franschhoek Pass it feels overly assisted and, in and around the centre point, pretty void of feedback. I thought Sport mode might dial some extra weight into proceedings but in reality all it does is ramp up throttle response and adopt a more aggressive shift programme. Still, given what this Ford is actually designed for, you can't hold any of this against it. Despite its utilitarian DNA, the Custom Sport performs admirably through most of this mountain road's twisty bits and disguises its heft well — better than any panel van with a 1,023kg payload has any right to. Body control is particularly polished. I was expecting to field a messy serving of pitch and roll around corners but somehow Ford's engineers have managed to keep it largely in check. Image: Supplied Though it puts up a gallant effort along the pass, the Custom Sport feels infinitely more at ease tackling the less technical asphalt ribbons that loop lazily between Villiersdorp and Worcester. With less lateral loads to worry about and that lengthy wheelbase (just over three metres) doing much to boost high-speed steadiness, this load-lugger charges on down the sleepy R43 at a rate of knots, the digital speedometer flashing three-figure velocities high enough to rack up a serious fine and/or tongue-lashing from the Breede Valley's finest. Put your foot down and you can carry a very deceptive turn of pace. You might not care — and I'm sure few prospective owners will — but the Custom Sport really does offer a modicum of dynamic performance that transcends its intended use case. While its racy exterior styling is nothing more than a frivolous sticker job, an exercise in car park peacocking, Ford's legacy of building fun-to-drive vehicles is genuine and can be felt here in spades. It's under the skin, beneath the metal and in this case helps dispel the notion that owning a practical cargo-hauler comes at the cost of driver appeal. 2025 Ford Transit Custom Sport | Update 5

Isuzu D-Max X-rider: Comfortable and stable in all conditions
When it comes to double-cab bakkies in South Africa, we always think of three brands: Isuzu, Ford and Toyota. There are now more entries into the market such as LDV and BYD, but the original workhorses are what South Africans have come to know and love. The Mail & Guardian had the Isuzu D-Max X-rider on test for a week. It is very stylish from the outside with black accents on the grille, side-steps and a roll-bar. This allows the Isuzu D-Max X-rider to express itself and stand out for its looks. The aggressive nature of the exterior helps the vehicle maintain that big and bullyish bakkie feeling. Stepping inside the bakkie, you are treated to a very comfortable experience: leather upholstery with red stitching and nice red designs along the dash. But I did have a small issue with how unresponsive the infotainment system was. It felt as if I had to really push the screen for it to process what I was trying to do. Luckily for Isuzu, it hasn't packed too much into the infotainment system, so it was not an inconvenience at all. When you get to drive the Isuzu D-Max X-rider, you begin to understand why these bakkies sell like hotcakes. The 1.9 litre turbodiesel engine delivers 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and while those are not the most boastful figures, it certainly is enough to get you through when cruising at the national speed limit. It's not exactly refined, but it is a 4×4 bakkie at the end of the day and the six-speed automatic gearbox is effortless. You will experience a touch of turbolag, but handling wise, even for a bakkie, there was very little body roll around bendy roads. You also have the option of off-roading with all the necessary features such as 4L and 4H that will make off-roading an easy task for the Isuzu D-Max X-rider. The suspension is also tuned for both on-road and off-road driving, so that does make the drive on this vehicle comfortable no matter where you are. In terms of safety, the Isuzu D-Max X-rider includes multiple airbags — driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Additionally, it features a rear view camera with rear sensors and cruise control. Ultimately, this bakkie is comfortable and stable in any condition. It doesn't discriminate or is not specifically built for one thing or another. It also feels solid and like a proper workhorse. The Isuzu D-Max X-rider starts from R652 500 and goes all the way up to R757 800.

Almost R1-billion to fuel Ford's journey to transform dealerships and keep customers for life
After 103 years in South Africa, Ford is doubling down on its dealer network and customer experience in the face of economic pressures, global disruption and a changing local market. Ford has weathered world wars, oil shocks and economic downturns since setting up shop in South Africa in 1923. Now it faces a market hit by affordability pressures, global supply shocks and a tidal wave of overseas competitors. Ford South Africa president Neale Hill believes the answer to this is a better customer experience. 'The experience we want to give our customers is not only in terms of the vehicles that they drive, but the ownership experience coming into dealerships needs to match that positioning in our vehicles,' Hill said. This repositioning comes after Ford ranked fourth in Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) market share with 6.5% and 3,058 units sold, trailing Toyota, Suzuki and Volkswagen in June. A 'family promise' Central to Ford's strategic pivot is its so-called 'Ford family promise' – a set of 22 initiatives aimed at smoothing out the pain points of owning a car. Unlike a guarantee, Hill calls it a 'proactive approach'. This ecosystem leans on Ford dealerships across the country with the goal of covering the entire customer journey, such as servicing, extended plans, warranties and finance under one roof. As Ford shifts up in terms of its market positioning with vehicles it describes as 'premium quality', the service experience needs to match the positioning of its vehicles, said Hill. In June 2025, Ford overtook Hyundai in new vehicle sales volume, according to data from the Automotive Business Council. (Data visualisation: Kara le Roux ) R900m and a new look Big promises demand big money. Ford's dealership partners are investing more than R900-million into upgrades and new facilities by 2027. In 2024 alone, 20 projects were on the go, said Ford network operations manager Kuda Takura, valued at R292-million. The company operates across 118 dealerships, supporting 10,600 jobs, according to Takura. Investments are split between 'greenfield projects' (new builds) and 'brownfield' upgrades to existing facilities. Ford is rolling out a new 'signature design' across its network, a concept dreamed up with input from its research team in the US. Forget showroom floors packed with cars. 'One would think the first thing you want to see when you walk into a dealership is a motor vehicle. Instead, you see what we call the 'social hub', a space where you come together,' Takura said. It's designed to be a comforting space customers want to spend time in, as an emotionally connected customer tends to spend twice as much and stay loyal, said Michael Zahariev, co-founder of Luxity, a designer reseller in South Africa. 'While the product might get you through the door, the experience is what keeps you coming back.' Ford's data seems to align with this retail trend. 'Dealers who invest in retail design and design standards see an uptick in their vehicle sales together with overall profits,' Takura said. A game of 'three-dimensional chess' Hill describes the auto industry as being in 'a very interesting state of flux' – a diplomatic way of describing a sector in which automakers are playing 'a game of three-dimensional chess', he said, with propulsion choices, new energy vehicles and battery electric in the mix. Indian and Chinese imports are flooding South Africa. In 2024, India accounted for 57% of imported passenger cars and lightweight vehicles; China was second at 17%, the Automotive Business Council's (Naamsa) data shows. South Africa now has 14 Chinese brands in play, Naamsa said, six of them launched last year alone. Growth is strongest in passenger vehicles and mini and small utility segments, according to Ford sales director Ryan Searle – categories Ford no longer serves. That shift has cost Ford market share, though it still grew sales by 8% year on year, said sales chief Ryan Searle. Its workhorse Ranger bakkie remains the backbone, making up 70% of volume, with the Territory SUV gaining traction. Tariff wars, protectionist policies and fractured supply chains have turned the industry into a geopolitical pressure cooker. 'It's going to take quite a while for this to settle down and for absolute clarity to come to the fore in terms of what the auto industry as a whole looks like at the end of it. You've got markets that are now seeing that tariffs are an acceptable form of defence,' Hill says. 'The first six months of Mr Trump being in the White House, he's certainly thrown the proverbial – I wouldn't even call it a cat, I'd probably call it a fox or a lynx – among the pigeons.' What this means for you Ford dealerships will start to look and feel more like luxury lounges than showrooms. Servicing your vehicle might become easier with online bookings and pickup options. Imported brands may keep vehicle prices competitive, but tariffs could change that. Local auto jobs remain at risk if manufacturing slows. An industry on edge South Africa's auto sector is one of the country's largest manufacturing segments, employing about 112,000 people directly and supporting about 320,000 jobs when you include the supply chain, according to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition's 2035 Master Plan. That's why Hill bristles at the idea of losing local production to imports. 'When you lose a manufacturing sector, you never get it back,' he warned, pointing to Goodyear's recent decision to shut its Kariega plant. 'That's testament to low to no growth rates, no economic development and an economy that is stagnating.' The fear is that if local OEMs falter, the ripple effect will gut suppliers, jobs and export earnings. Hill argues that some form of government intervention – incentives, support – is non-negotiable to keep the industry viable. DM
