Questions over new power tariff

Questions over new power tariff

The Star8 hours ago

PETALING JAYA: Home solar adopters have expressed concern that the new power tariff structure, taking effect tomorrow, may impact the value of their energy contributions to the grid and affect their returns in the long term.
In the case of general manager H. Ram, he said he had signed up with Tenaga Nasional (TNB) early this year for a 10-year net energy metering (NEM) contract, in which the utility company would buy back surplus electricity the home solar system produces by offsetting charges from the actual monthly usage of electricity.
He said the contract should be honoured, adding that any changes that deviate from the terms would be unfair to those who had supported the national agenda of transitioning to sustainable energy.
Ram said his electricity bill, which used to average about RM450 monthly, has dropped to just about RM10 after switching to solar power under the NEM contract.
As such, he is of the view that households which switch to solar power would still benefit.
'When you tabulate the savings, including the RM4,000 cash rebate given to adopters, it is still worthwhile and attractive,' he said.
'I do not see any major setbacks in adopting it.'
(Under a government incentive programme aimed at encouraging installations of solar photovoltaic systems among residential users, a cash rebate of up to RM4,000 is given to those who submit their NEM application and successfully commission their solar PV system installations with TNB.)
Ram, 52, said he hoped TNB would clear the air on the new tariffs for solar power users.
'In my opinion, solar power is the way forward to complement sustainable power generation for households,' he said.
As such, he hoped that the new tariffs would not deviate from the terms of the NEM contract.
Another solar panel adopter, retiree Daniel Chew, said he found the calculations and formula given by TNB on the new rates rather confusing.
'I am overwhelmed by these formulas. I hope it can be explained in plain language.
'We can only wait until the end of July to know how the new tariffs will affect solar power users,' said Chew, 73.
'Any increase will affect people, especially folks like me who are retired and rely on what little savings we have.'
On Saturday, The Star published a letter from a reader, Kok Siong Lee, who pointed out that the changes in the power tariff structure would impact home solar users.
He said the new rates could cause them to lose up to 50% in revenue from the power their solar panels generate and feed back to the grid.
Instead of getting a return of investment (ROI) within five years, he said the amount of time for ROI could go up to between 10 and 12 years.
'Since installing a home solar system will no longer be financially feasible and sensible, public adoption will grind to a halt, and so will the national agenda to transition to green renewable energy and becoming a nation with sustainable net-zero emission,' Kok said.

Retired teacher loses RM838k to P166 HIFA investment scam in Kedah

ALOR SETAR: A retired teacher in Kedah fell victim to an investment scam, losing RM838,000 after being lured into the fraudulent 'P166 HIFA' scheme promoted via WhatsApp. The 72-year-old victim was promised high returns but instead lost his savings in the elaborate con. Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) chief, Superintendent Loi Yew Lik, confirmed the case, stating that the victim was added to a WhatsApp group named 'P166 HIFA' after initial contact with a person identified as Helen. The scammer provided a link to download the 'PHC VIEW' app from Pinnacle Horizon Capital, falsely displaying inflated profits. 'The victim was promised returns five times his investment within days. Believing the scheme, he transferred RM838,000 in eight transactions to four different company accounts,' Loi said. The companies involved were Hanifi Smart Home Sdn Bhd, Seeking Alpha International Sdn Bhd, Kiam Hong Electri Sdn Bhd, and Master Gold Properties Sdn Bhd. The victim later saw a fabricated profit of RM4.09 million on the app but was unable to withdraw the funds. Scammers demanded additional payments, prompting the victim to file a police report. Loi warned the public against similar scams using names like 'Pinnacle Horizon Capital' and 'Moomoo'. Kedah police have opened seven investigation papers related to these fraudulent schemes. 'Verify investments via the Mule Check app, JSJK's Facebook, or contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 before transferring money,' he advised.

PM Anwar: ECERDC records RM6.4b realised investments in 1H2025

KUALA LUMPUR — The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has successfully recorded RM6.4 billion in realised investments in the first six months of this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the ECERDC has also successfully created more than 2,800 jobs to date. 'At the same time, the amount of committed investments has reached RM10.4 billion, surpassing the RM10 billion target set for 2025,' he said in a post on his official Facebook page today. Earlier on, Anwar attended a meeting with the ECERDC to review the latest progress on key performance indicators for the economic corridor, and to discuss the development framework for East Coast Economic Region (ECER) under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, which is currently being formulated by the government. The Prime Minister said the government's strategic plans, especially through the ECER Development Plan, among others, will see eight strategic and high-impact projects scheduled for completion this year. 'I emphasised the importance of prioritising the country's long-term interests in attracting investors, including the importance of ensuring a percentage of technology and skills transfer elements in every approved investment. 'The ECERDC needs to maintain this momentum through an efficient and proactive facilitation process which will strengthen the East Coast Region as a competitive investment destination both nationally and internationally,' he added. In a separate statement, the ECERDC said the manufacturing sector accounted for 59 per cent of the RM6.4 billion realised investments. The council said Pahang led the list with realised investments totalling RM4 billion, followed by Terengganu (RM1.3 billion) and Kelantan (RM1.1 billion), while Johor saw RM13.3 million of investments in agriculture from the development of a biocompost facility in Mersing. 'Key realised investments also include a RM1 billion integrated oil refinery plant, a RM950 million tourism development, and a RM667 million facility to produce Maleic Anhydride in Pahang. 'In Kelantan, a RM1 billion 84-megawatt mini hydroelectric plant is being developed, while Terengganu secured a RM638 million investment for the processing of pulverised quartz,' it added. — BERNAMA

Ex-banker jailed two years, fined RM1mil for securities fraud

KUALA LUMPUR: A former investment banker has been sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to two years' imprisonment and fined RM1 million, or a further six months in jail if he fails to pay, for committing securities fraud involving RM201,000. Ruwan Amaresh Shaun Ponniah, who previously served as an associate director of Debt Capital Markets at CIMB Investment Bank, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Puan Norma Binti Ismail to one charge under Section 179(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA). In a statement, the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) said the court also took into account nine additional similar offences under Section 171A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) for sentencing purposes. Investigations found that Ruwan deceived seven investors by claiming he would invest their money in shares listed on local and foreign stock exchanges but instead used the funds for other purposes without their knowledge. Ruwan also pleaded guilty to one charge under section 58(1) of the CMSA for holding himself out as carrying on a business in fund management without being licensed or a registered person for fund management. The court sentenced him to two years imprisonment and ordered for the jail term to run concurrently with the first offence. Fund management is a regulated activity under Schedule 2 of the CMSA. The offences took place between October 2018 and June 2020. Ruwan's plea was made in pursuance to his application for a plea bargain under section 172C of the CPC. According to the statement, Ruwan was first arrested and charged by the SC on Sept 2024. He claimed trial to all the charges and was granted bail at RM210,000 with one surety. On Feb 5, 2025, upon Ruwan's application to the High Court for a reduction of the bail sum, the amount was reduced to RM105,000. However, Ruwan was unable to post bail and was remanded at the Sungai Buloh prison to date. The court ordered Ruwan's jail term to take effect from his date of arrest. The SC reminds the public to remain vigilant and to confirm the legitimacy of any investment offers.
