France Captain Griedge Mbock 'Impatient' for Euro 2025 Debut in Quarterfinal
Les Bleues have been boosted by the return of Mbock for Saturday's quarterfinal against Germany after the experienced defender missed the whole of the group stage due to a calf injury.
Although it's not as if they fared too badly without her. France topped one of the toughest groups in the tournament with three wins, including over defending champion England.
"I feel really good," Mbock said on Friday. "I was away from the pitch for quite a long time, but today I feel good and I'm going to be back to the pitch. I took all the energy that the team gave me, that helped me to hold on for this time of absence. I'm impatient to start this competition on the pitch and, simply, to be able to contribute."
The winner will face world champion Spain or Switzerland in the semifinals.
The 30-year-old Mbock has made 92 appearances for France — starting 81 of them — since her debut 12 years ago.
But at Euro 2025, she was restricted to a place on the substitutes' bench and only then so could she cheer on the team from the sidelines.
"It's very good news," France coach Laurent Bonadei said. "She suffered a bit in silence for all this time, far away from the pitch.
"However, she was present with her teammates in order to give very good advice. That is why I included her on the bench, because she's captain, she's very precious in the locker room also and she'll be ready to start the game tomorrow."
France is on an 11-match winning streak, but the quarterfinals have always been somewhat of a stumbling block for Les Bleues.
France has only twice made it into the semifinals of a World Cup or Euros: at the 2011 World Cup, where it lost to the United States, and at Euro 2022, where it fell to Germany.
Les Bleues have been eliminated in the quarterfinals in six of the past eight World Cups or Euros.
"I like talking about overcoming barriers, and I think that, since October, this team has been overcoming barriers at each step," Bonadei said. "We had the friendly games, we had the Nations League and now our group here, which was labeled the group of death and this team advanced and managed to overcome barriers.
"So I have a lot of confidence in this team to overcome this next barrier."
As well as being boosted at the back by Mbock, France knows it can rely on its ruthless attack.
France bagged 11 goals in its three group stage matches — scored by nine different players.
Moreover, Germany will be weakened in defense. Captain Giulia Gwinn was ruled out of the tournament after injuring her knee in her team's opening win and her replacement, Carlotta Wamser, is suspended for the quarterfinal after being sent off in Germany's 4-1 thrashing by Sweden.

Aitana Bonmatí 'grateful' to be preparing for quarter-finals after 'frustrating' meningitis hospitalisation
Aitana Bonmatí revealed that she is 'grateful' to be part of Spain's squad as the World Champions prepare to face Switzerland in the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 quarter-finals, just weeks after she was hospitalised with viral meningitis. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner sent shockwaves across the footballing world when she posted a photo from her hospital bed less than a week before the tournament got underway, and while there was widespread panic that the Barcelona midfielder may have been sidelined, she told a press conference on Thursday that 'I never thought I wouldn't be at the Euros.' 'You know me: my mentality, my desire to be at these tournaments. Something unexpected happened to me,' she explained, adding that 'I was great, training well, and then suddenly I find myself in hospital.' 'At that negative moment, five days before the tournament, they're frustrating moments that hurt you [but] today I can say that I'm ready to fight in the quarter-finals and for that I'm grateful,' the 27-year-old revealed. Spain will meet Switzerland in their quarter-final on Friday, with la Roja set to be outnumbered in the stands by the tournament hosts. Bonmatí hopes that her side can 'continue making history' after their stunning first FIFA World Cup triumph two years ago. 'These life-or-death games are coming where you win or you go home, and we want to do everything we can to continue,' the Barça star explained in Spain's pre-match press conference. 'We'll try to maintain our level. I expect tight, competitive matches that are difficult to win, but that's where we can grow and where we'll see the best teams.' Spain's UEFA Women's Euro 2025 quarter-final against Switzerland gets underway at Bern's Stadion Wankdorf on Friday 18 July, with kick-off at 20:00 BST [21:00 CEST]. UK viewers can watch live on BBC One, with coverage from 19:30 BST.

'Messi cam' on TikTok live will let you follow Inter Miami star in MLS games
Lionel Messi fans will be able to watch the Argentine World Cup champion again on a solo TikTok live stream for four upcoming matches. TikTok, Major League Soccer, and MLS Season Pass on Apple TV are bringing back "Player Spotlight: Messi" — a special live stream offering fans an all-Messi match view. The live streams will be shown on the @MLS, @InterMiamiCF and @AppleTV TikTok accounts, starting with Inter Miami's second Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Aug. 2. The other three live stream dates will be announced at a later time. Last season's Messi live stream during Inter Miami's playoff opener against Atlanta United drew more than 6.4 million viewers, setting the record for the largest live audience for a U.S. sports event on TikTok. Apple also said the Oct. 25, 2024 match was their most widely viewed sporting event. 'After the overwhelming success of Player Spotlight: Messi, which delivered our biggest-ever live U.S. sports audience on TikTok, we knew we had to bring it back,' said Rollo Goldstaub, Global Head of Sports Partnerships at TikTok, in a statement. The league is 'pushing the boundaries of how fans experience the game,' says MLS Executive Vice President of Media Seth Bacon. 'With this collaboration, we're bringing fans even closer to one of the greatest players of all time — in a way that's dynamic, immersive, and made for the next generation of fans,' Bacon said.
