‘Slapped, beaten with baton': CCSU warden removed for thrashing hostellers in Meerut

Time of India31-05-2025
MEERUT: The warden of Chaudhary Charan Singh University's (CCSU) Kailash Prakash Hostel has been removed on Friday following protest by students for allegedly thrashing 20-25 hostellers after finding water splashed on the floor and four students in a room for two.
A purported video of the accused warden, DK Chauhan, mercilessly beating the students on Thursday night was widely circulated on social media on Friday. In the video, Chauhan is seen purportedly raining blows with a baton and slapping the students as he charged at them like a raging bull.
His terror continued for nearly 30 minutes, with shocked students writhing in pain. The video shows that the students were standing still while the warden madly attacked them.
On Friday, students staged a sit-in protest outside the vice chancellor's office, demanding immediate action against the warden. Calling the incident a "blatant misuse of power", they demanded stricter regulations for hostel authorities.
After hours of protest and intervention by university officials, the warden was removed from his duties.
A BTech student, requesting anonymity, told TOI, "The warden arrived at the hostel on Thursday night, and without asking anything, began assaulting some students.

He also used casteist slurs against some Dalit students. When we were recording the video, he tried to snatch our phones. We raised the matter with senior university authorities, but they sided with the warden."
Prof Dinesh Kumar, chief warden of CCSU, told TOI, "We have removed DK Chauhan from his post. The VC, Sangeeta Shukla, is not here. Once she returns, we will place this matter on her table and constitute a high-level committee, in which we will try to include a student member to probe the incident.
Further action will be taken after committee's report."
"This kind of behaviour is unacceptable. We are committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of each and every student," said a university spokesperson, on condition of anonymity.
DK Chauhan told TOI, "They were attacking me. I politely asked them to come out, but some students hurled abuses at me. I have submitted multiple pieces of evidence to the university administration, but they have only presented one side of the story.
My car was vandalized, and my home guards were unable to protect me - which compelled me to retaliate."
This is not the first time DK Chauhan has courted controversy. A few days ago, he allegedly ordered the on-duty home guards to keep a delivery boy hostage for around 30 minutes for delivering food at the hostel after 9 pm, said another student from Maharana Pratap Hostel.

390 check posts in border dists to prevent liquor movement ahead of elections

Patna: The Bihar Police headquarters on Tuesday announced to set up 390 check posts in 23 border districts to prevent illicit liquor movement ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The police have also identified locations for an additional 161 check posts in bordering states. As many as 10 teams of special operations group (SOG) under the prohibition unit have been deployed to keep tabs on the liquor trade. On an average, the SOG has been recovering 75,000 litre liquor every month. Amit Kumar Jain, ADG (weaker sections), during a press conference, highlighted increased liquor seizures, arrests and strategic inter-state operations. This year till June, over 16 lakh litre liquor worth over Rs 74 crore has been recovered in the state, marking a 12% increase in average monthly seizures, compared to 2024, he said. The units are especially keeping an eye on hooch traders to prevent incidents of poisoning, even as no such case has been reported this year, added Jain. In order to curb cross-border smuggling, the SOG conducted a total of 19 operations outside the state — seven in Jharkhand, 10 in Uttar Pradesh and two in Chhattisgarh — till July 2025 this year, seizing a total of around 95,000 litre Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), and 16 large and six small vehicles, according to a release by the Bihar PHQ. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo The crackdown on liquor-related offences has also led to a substantial number of arrests. "This year till June, a total of 63,442 individuals have been arrested. Over 61% of them were consumers and 39% liquor traders and distributors. The police have also identified 305 wanted accused from other states and are sharing their lists with the authorities concerned," said the release, adding 13,921 liquor traders from outside Bihar have been arrested within the state since April 2016. "A total of nine death penalties and 18 life imprisonments have been given to the offenders from April 2016 to July 2025," it read. In light of the upcoming elections, the Bihar Police is actively coordinating with their counterparts and excise departments of other states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh to curb the smuggling of IMFL. This coordination includes sharing information to identify the retailers/wholesalers. Meanwhile, the district police have been asked to ensure timely destruction of the seized liquor and photography of the process.

Synod of Orthodox Church expresses anguish over persecution of Christians

The episcopal synod of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, which met at the Devalokam Catholicate Palace here on Tuesday (July 29), expressed deep concern over the ''ongoing persecution'' of Christians across the country and called for justice for the two nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh. In a statement, the synod condemned the attack on the two Keralite nuns by religious extremists, carried out in full view of the police, and their subsequent arrest on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. The synod also voiced concern over the growing threat to the secular fabric of the nation. 'Uplifting the destitute and the marginalised is a core principle of the Christian faith. The Church has been undertaking unparalleled missionary work among tribal and Dalit communities. In vital areas such as education and health care, the Christian community continues to deliver remarkable service. Those who view these efforts with hostility are, in effect, undermining the progress of this nation,' read the statement.

Outrage in China: Secretly filmed photos of Chinese women shared on Telegram chatgroups with hundreds of users

A wave of outrage is sweeping across online platforms in China following reports of sexually exploitative photos and videos of women being widely shared in encrypted Telegram chat groups with some having hundreds of thousands of users. These images and clips have reportedly been captured secretly in both private and public spaces. According to a report by news agency Reuters, the revelations – initially reported by Chinese state media – suggest that a Chinese-language Telegram forum named " MaskPark tree hole forum " distributed images of women secretly filmed or photographed in locations including public toilets. This particular group amassed over 100,000 anonymous members in China and overseas. The report detailed that some users posted private images of their current or ex-girlfriends and female family members. Disturbingly, footage of women secretly filmed using pinhole cameras in public spaces was allegedly being sold within these chat groups. Users typically rely on VPN software to access Telegram, which is blocked in the country. The Southern Daily report also revealed the existence of other Telegram sub-forums targeting Chinese-speaking users with pornographic content, some boasting up to 900,000 members. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cyprus Is Open for Investors - You Might Be Interested Cyprus Invest | Search ads Undo How Chinese people reacted to leaked private photos and videos The revelations quickly gained traction on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo, with related hashtags garnering over 270 million views on Tuesday (July 26). One user commented, "It's truly frightening how secret filming has infiltrated everyday life." A female victim, who remained anonymous, recounted her harrowing experience to the newspaper: "My ex-boyfriend secretly took photos of me during sex, posted my private photos to the group without my permission and publicised my social media accounts." What Telegram has to say Telegram has said that 'the sharing of non-consensual pornography is explicitly forbidden by Telegram's terms of service and is removed whenever discovered.' A spokesperson added that moderators 'proactively monitor public parts of the platform and accept reports in order to remove millions of pieces of harmful content each day.' The main MaskPark forum has since been taken down, though some smaller sub-forums reportedly remain active. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
