Nagpur: Come Sunday and Nagpur will inaugurate its first professional badminton training facility, following the model of India's most successful Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.
The state-of-the-art centre will cater to players across all skill levels.
The Arundhati Arun Badminton Academy (AABA) will commence operations at Besa, utilising the facilities of Nirmal Sports Academy, a venture of the Nayse family. The academy will provide training to beginners, amateurs and elite professionals under experienced coaches.
In a major first for Central India, the AABA is a premier professional badminton academy founded by former Indian badminton stars SR Arun Vishnu and Nagpur's very own Arundhati Pantawane.
This makes Arun and Arundhati the first Indian badminton couple to set up a professional academy in the region.
Addressing media persons on Thursday, the former National Games champion and world No. 49 Arundhati said, "The AABA is founded with a vision of strengthening India through badminton. With a mission to train athletes from grassroots to elite international levels, AABA offers world-class coaching, advanced facilities, and comprehensive training programmes."
Arun Vishnu, a five-time national mixed doubles champion and former world No.37, expressed enthusiasm about training regional talent. "We have shifted from Hyderabad to Nagpur to start our own set up. Our aim is to train the promising players from the region and give them a perfect platform to launch their career. I am sure in the years to come, you can see players from our academy shining at the national and international level," said Arun, who had served as Indian team doubles coach.
Both Arundhati and Arun gave the credit to Gopichand. Arundhati said, "We are what, we are today, is only because of Gopi sir. We thank him for the efforts he put in us and for making us successful. Its time to pass on the baton to the next generation."
Nirmal Sports Academy's Sachin Nayse said they signed a five-year deal with AABA for the benefit of local players. "We constructed a huge badminton hall keeping in mind the talented players of the region.
Earlier, top local players used to shift to major academies in Hyderabad or Bengaluru. But now they will get all the best facilities here. Both Arundhati and Arun are not only top badminton players of their playing days but have now also established themselves as leading coaches," said Nayse.
The facility features five hova badminton flooring on wooden surface, gymnasium, changing rooms, Yonex store, and spectator gallery for 600 people, suitable for national coaching camps and tournaments. The coaching team includes Rutvik Kiran, Tanmay Gawande, Atul Tamrakar, Akshaya Warang and Sanskriti Chabra. Ramesh Nayse and Sushant Nayse of Nirmal Sports Academy attended the announcement.

IOA differences resolved, CEO appointment ratified

New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association's executive council, led by president PT Usha, announced on Thursday that it has resolved all internal differences, marking an end to the prolonged standoff. The council members put up a unified front and said they would work together towards India's bid for the 2036 Olympics. Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha, second right, talks with Chief Executive Officer Raghuram Iyer during a joint press conference in New Delhi. (AP) IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer, whose appointment was the major bone of contention between Usha and the executive council (EC), sat with the EC members and also addressed the media. IOA Sr vice president Ajay Patel, treasurer Sahdev Yadav, vice president Gagan Narang, joint secretary Kalyan Cahubey and Alaknanda Ashok, and EC members Amitabh Sharma, Harpal Singh, Rohit Rajpal, Dola Banerjee and athletes commission vice chairperson Sharath Kamal were present. 'Everything has been sorted and that is why we have IOA CEO sitting with us. Whatever small internal disputes were there have been resolved,' Usha told reporters. 'We are focussing on the long term goal of transforming India into a global sporting powerhouse. By 2036 we not only want to achieve sustained Olympic success but also bring the Olympic Games to India,' said Usha. The functioning of the IOA had been severely impacted since the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as CEO in January last year. Members of the EC had refused to ratify his appointment, objecting to his pay package of ₹20 lakh per month along with additional perks. The International Olympic Council (IOC) had raised concerns about governance in IOA when an Indian delegation in which Usha and Iyer were also part of, met them in Lausanne to discuss India's bid for the 2036 Olympics. The CEO has an important strategic and administrative role to play in the bid process. It has now been learnt that Iyer's salary has been adjusted a bit but it will be paid from last year January onwards when he was appointed. The truce was reached in the last few days as Sports Minister Manuskh Mandivya helped break the deadlock between Usha and the EC members. Usha too reached out to her colleagues and opened the channels for discussion. It is learnt that a Special General Meeting will be soon called to discuss and approve long pending issues. There are also several financial bills and pending salaries that require approval. The EC members will have a lot at hand in looking after various IOA committees. IOA joint secretary Chaubey said that Iyer's appointment had been ratified at a EC meeting on Thursday. 'There was an EC meeting today and we discussed a lot of things including Raghu Iyer's appointment and that is why he is sitting here among us. 'There have been some differences between us and letters were also exchanged (EC and Usha). But in democracy, there is always a difference of opinion. No house, no organization can completely be flawless. We want to look forward,' said Chaubey. Treasurer Sahdev Yadav also said whatever 'little dispute and differences' were there have been sorted. 'We are all together. We are looking ahead to the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and our Olympic and CWG bid,' said Yadav. Iyer, who was part of the Indian delegation in Lausanne, said the meeting with the IOC was very positive. 'It was attended by the top brass of IOC and the follow up would be that they would come down to India at some point in time very soon. 'We are at the stage of continuous dialogue with the IOC and they informed us a lot about sustainability, athlete-centric work and a lot on the legacy plan in a workshop. As you know, the IOC has a new leader who is driving some changes within the organisation. They are in a pause and reflect mode (with regards to selection of future Olympic host cities).' On Qatar's bid for the 2036 Games, he said, 'it will be premature to say anything because there are still countries jumping in.' As IOA athlete commission vice chairperson, table tennis legend Sharath said IOA will launch athlete centric programmes, aimed at developing structures for mental health support, career-transition guidances and training access beyond the competitive years. 'We will also try to create mentorship, and leadership programmes for our athletes.' A drive will be launched on August 29 -- National Sports Day -- to try and get 10 million children to play any sport. Anti-doping programmes have also been planned.

Anahat enters her first world juniors semis, guarantees medal

Mumbai: India's rising squash talent Anahat Singh confirmed her first World Squash Junior Championships medal by entering the semi-finals of the 2025 edition in Cairo on Thursday. BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - JULY 29: Anahat Singh of Team India plays a shot against Jada Ross of Team Saint Vincent and the Grenadines during the Men's/Women's Singles Round of 64 Match on day one of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games at University of Birmingham Hockey & Squash Centre on July 29, 2022 on the Birmingham, England. (Photo by) (Getty Images) The 17-year-old, seeded second, beat Egypt's Malika Elkaraksy 11-6, 13-11, 11-5 in the last eight to break her quarter-final jinx at the prestigious junior event. Anahat had been halted at the quarter-final stage of the previous three junior worlds, losing close matches in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and each of them to Egyptian opponents. This will fill the one medal missing in the promising Indian's rich cabinet at the junior level, with Anahat bagging medals at every other key global age-group event including the British Open and US Open. Despite increasingly dabbling on the senior professional tour -- she is currently the top-ranked Indian woman on the PSA charts at world No.54 -- Anahat had singled out medalling at the junior worlds as one of her season's biggest goals. And facing her toughest test yet in the tournament, she wasn't going to let this quarter-final slip. Running into a left-handed Egyptian and a partisan crowd inside a packed Black Ball Club rooting for their own, Anahat maintained her level and composure. From 5-6 in the first game, Anahat won six straight points to seize the advantage. Malika bounced back in the second game and held two game balls but Anahat dug in and came out a 13-11 winner. With Malika's fight quelled, Anahat soon wrapped up the close contest. Anahat will take on Nadien Elhammamy on Friday for a place in the final. The Egyptian had beaten her in the quarters of the 2024 edition, but the Indian had reversed the result at the JSW Indian Open in Mumbai this year.
