Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu pushing Banakacherla to divert attention from Polavaram project, says APCC chief Sharmila
In a statement, Ms. Sharmila alleged that the TDP-led NDA government was betraying the people by reducing the Polavaram project's height to 41 metres from 45 metres to avoid Relief and Rehabilitation (R&R) costs, saving the Centre ₹25,000 crore.
In 2019, the estimated cost of the project was ₹55,000 crore. The revised cost in 2024 was Rs. 30,000 crore, she said, adding that it was converted from a gravity to a lift irrigation project, weakening its original intent and benefits.
She criticised the ruling party MPs for not raising the issue in Parliament, and said they were either afraid of the BJP or resorting to 'political compromises.'
Referring to the Banakacherla project, the APCC chief said it did not have the required permissions, especially from the Forest Department. Out of the 50,000 acres required, 20,000 acres were forest lands. Pointing to the whopping estimated cost of ₹ 80,000 crore, she said there was no clarity on the sources of funding.

Give land voluntarily for Shaktipeeth, get 25% bonus, says Kshirsagar
Kolhapur: Farmers who voluntarily give up their land for the Shaktipeeth expressway will receive an additional bonus of 25% of the land price, said state planning commission chairman Rajesh Kshirsagar on Saturday evening in Kolhapur. He said farmers will receive two-and-a-half times the land cost, and district collectors will be given the authority to fix the price. Approximately 46,000 hectares of land will be acquired for the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth expressway. In Kolhapur district alone, 5,300 acres will be acquired. "We met officials of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the implementing authority for the Shaktipeeth expressway, a couple of days ago. The panel under the district collector will be set up to find a mean of the ready reckoner and market price of the land to compensate the farmers. The base price will be two-and-a-half times the mean cost, and above that, the farmer will receive an additional 25% as a reward for voluntarily giving up their land. Recently, the state cabinet approved Rs 11,700 crore for land acquisition in 12 districts. Govt has agreed to increase the amount for land acquisition if required," said Kshirsagar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Also, the road width would not exceed 110 metres. "The actual cost of construction is around Rs 51,000 crore. The rest is the interest on the loans, environmental compensation, and land acquisition, which in total takes the project cost to Rs 86,000 crore," added the MLA. Meanwhile, the anti-Shaktipeeth expressway forum challenged anyone supporting the highway to show that their land was in the way of the highway after Kshirsagar claimed that 35 farmers have submitted their 7/12 extracts for land acquisition. Raju Shetti, of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said, "The MLA took 35 people with him to show support for the road project. Some of these people don't have land that will be affected by the project. There are more than 10,000 farmers who will be affected by the project, and showing support from a mere 35 farmers is a clear failure on the part of govt and those supporting the destructive project."

Karnataka high court slaps Rs 2 lakh fine on officials for denying certificate to woman
Bengaluru: The high court imposed a cost of Rs 2 lakh on the district caste and income verification committee chairman and members in Hassan for their failure to issue a validity certificate to a candidate selected for govt service. The fine is to be paid personally by the chairman and members of the committee within four weeks and not from state funds. Justice M Nagaprasanna delivered the ruling while allowing a petition by BN Muthulaxmi, who was selected in Jan 2023 for the post of assistant public prosecutor under category 3A. Despite submitting necessary documents through Sevasindhu portal and in physical form, her application was rejected by the committee on grounds that her husband's income exceeded the prescribed limit. The court, however, held that the committee had erred in considering spousal income when legal precedent mandates that only paternal income be considered for such certifications. The committee's decision came despite the petitioner citing rulings from the Supreme Court and high court that supported her claim. Justice Nagaprasanna criticised the committee's handling of the case and described the delay in issuing the certificate as "miscarriage of justice". The delay prevented the petitioner from joining service for over a year even as others from the same selection process commenced their roles. While Muthulaxmi is now entitled to all consequential benefits except salary and monetary arrears, the court's ruling underscored the importance of adhering to legal precedent in administrative decision-making.
