Porsche trims outlook as tariffs add to ‘storm' of challenges
The burden of tariffs on car imports to the US added to Porsche's woes as it undergoes a costly restructuring while facing weakness in its key market China and a sluggish transition to electric cars.
"We continue to face significant challenges around the world. This is not a storm that will pass," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said.
Taking into account the newly agreed tariff of 15% from August 1, the German carmaker expects group sales this year in the range of €37bn (R764.30bn) to €38bbn (R784.95bn), in line with its previous forecast, and a return on sales of between 5% and 7%, down from a previously expected 6.5% to 8.5% range.
Countermeasures such as price adjustments are included in the outlook as Porsche seeks to mitigate the damage, the company said.
Group figures released last week showed Porsche's operating profit collapsing by 91% year on year in the second quarter to €154m (R3.18bn).

In 2012, he was expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) for calling then-president Jacob Zuma a dictator. Malema had earlier been suspended after being found guilty on three charges, including bringing the ANC into disrepute for advocating regime change in Botswana. The EFF also accused the ANC-led government of failing to improve the country's economy since the end of apartheid. 'Without resolving domestic structural constraints, our country will always be at the mercy of dominant imperial powers, tossed between competing global interests like a leaf in a storm,' the party said. EU-US trade deal slaps EU exports with shocking 15% tariffs
The European Union (EU) and the United States (US) finalised a major trade agreement on 28 July 2025. The deal introduces a 15% tariff on most EU exports to the U.S. market. This tariff is a significant increase for most goods in key sectors like automotive and machinery. Additionally, it mitigates the threat of a much steeper 30% tariff in early August. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the agreement brings 'stability and predictability' for EU exporters. She acknowledged that while a 15% tariff is significant, it reflects the best result under current geopolitical tensions. Her remarks followed weeks of intense negotiations between EU and U.S. trade officials. Before the deal, U.S. tariffs on EU exports averaged around 2%, varying by sector, according to World Trade Organisation (WTO) data. However, the new flat rate was considered a compromise to prevent an escalating trade war. Markets responded quickly. Despite short-term volatility, analysts suggest the deal may offer longer-term stability. Still, some industries fear the tariff burden will weaken EU competitiveness globally. Others argue that the agreement creates a predictable baseline for future transatlantic trade talks. On 31 July 2025, President Trump announced a 39% import tariff on Swiss goods, effective 7 August 2025. This spike was attributed to a broadly positive growth sentiment in the Eurozone and an improving economic outlook. This rally occurred despite the European Central Bank (ECB) keeping interest rates stable in July. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the trade deal, stating that it prevented a 'needless escalation' in transatlantic trade relations. 30% US tariff on SA exports will hit 30,000 jobs
The government says 30,000 jobs are likely to be affected by the 30% tariff imposed by the US on South African exports. This was revealed by trade, industry and competition department director-general Simphiwe Hamilton during a joint media briefing with the international relations and co-operation department on Monday. 'We base this on consultations we have with all sectors of the economy — from automotive to agriculture — and all the other sectors that are going to be affected, and now we are at about 30,000 jobs that could be affected,' Hamilton said. South Africa faces the highest tariff rate in Sub-Saharan Africa and from August 7 products exported to the US will be subjected to the 30% levy. During the briefing, international relations and co-operation minister Ronald Lamola said the government had been strengthening trade and investment partnerships with various global partners. Those efforts were starting to bear fruit with the focus on markets across Africa as well as in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. SA faces the highest rate in sub-Saharan Africa. Countries like Lesotho and Zimbabwe were hit with a 15% tariff. In his weekly newsletter, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the US's decision to impose the 30% tariff on South African imports highlighted the urgency with which the country must adapt to the increasingly turbulent conditions in global trade. Ramaphosa said the US was South Africa's second-largest trading partner by country and the tariff measures would significantly affect industries that depend heavily on US-bound exports, with the workers they employ and the effect on the national fiscus. 'Domestic sectors such as agriculture, automotive and textiles have historically benefited from duty-free access to the US market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. 'Our trade relations have historically been complementary in nature,' Ramaphosa said. 'South African exports do not compete with US producers and do not pose a threat to US industry. It remains our aspiration that this should continue. 'Largely, our exports are inputs into US industries and therefore support the US's industrial base. South Africa is also the biggest investor from the African continent into the US, with 22 of our companies investing in a number of sectors including mining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and the food chain.' Ramaphosa said government had been engaging the US to enhance mutually beneficial trade and investment relations and all communication channels remained open. 'Our priority is protecting our export industries. We will continue to engage the US in an attempt to preserve market access for our products. We must also accelerate the diversification of our export markets, particularly by deepening intra-African trade.'
