The story of the world's most advanced and expensive earth observation satellite began nearly 15 years ago when the Indian Space Research Organisation turned down an offer from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to launch a radar satellite using an Indian rocket from Sriharikota spaceport. The US satellite was to use sweepSAR (sweep synthetic aperture radar) technology to provide wide area coverage and fine spatial resolution at the same time. New Delhi proposed an alternative: housing two radars in a single satellite. Both parties agreed, and an agreement was inked. The L-band radar, associated systems, and the antenna were made at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California, while the S-band radar was built at the Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad. From next week, the two synthetic aperture radars aboard NISAR will detect changes in the planet's surface down to fractions of an inch. The spacecraft will bounce microwave signals off Earth's surface and receive the return signals on a radar antenna reflector measuring 12 meters across. The satellite's ability to see through clouds and rain, day and night, will enable users to continuously monitor earthquake and landslide-prone areas and determine how quickly glaciers and ice sheets are changing..India-US: Exploring new frontiers in space cooperation.'NISAR can detect even small changes in the Earth's surface such as ground deformation, ice sheet movement and vegetation dynamics,' ISRO says. Other applications include sea ice classification, ship detection, shoreline monitoring, storm characterisation, changes in soil moisture, mapping and monitoring of surface water resources and disaster response. 'It's a highly advanced satellite,' notes K Sivan, former ISRO chairman. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and ageing infrastructure can pose risks to lives and property. Able to see subtle changes in Earth's surface, NISAR can help with hazard-monitoring efforts and potentially give decision-makers more time to prepare for a disaster. For earthquakes, it will provide insights into which parts of a fault slowly move without producing quakes and which are locked together and could potentially slip. For the farm sector, it will help monitor the growth of crops from planting to harvest, generating crucial insights on how to time plantings and adjust irrigation schedules. The mission will have the resolution to see even small plots of farmland. The satellite's development path was a challenging one. The ISRO-NASA pact was signed in October 2014 with a target to launch the satellite by 2020. But developing the radar and antenna took more time, and the US could transfer the payload to India only in 2023-24. Unfortunately, within months, it was sent to the USA for repair. In March 2024, the radar antenna reflector of the satellite was transported back to a facility in California, where reflective tape was applied and other precautionary measures were taken to mitigate temperature increases that could have potentially affected the deployment of the reflector from its stowed configuration before beginning the science operations in space. The component returned to ISRO's clean room by October 2024, when the Indian space agency began preparation for a February launch, which didn't materialise. Ironically, a GSLV with a cryogenic engine will be used to launch the India-US satellite on July 30, even though the USA left no stone unturned for India to acquire the cryogenic technology. The mission's extraordinary capabilities come from the synthetic aperture radar. As the radar travels, its antenna continuously transmits microwave pulses and receives echoes from the surface. When the pulses hit something — a volcanic cone, for example — they scatter. The antenna receives those signals that echo back to the instrument, which measures their strength, change in frequency, how long they took to return, and if they bounced off of multiple surfaces, such as buildings. 'This mission packs in a wide range of science toward a common goal of studying our changing planet and the impacts of natural hazards,' says Deepak Putrevu, co-lead of the ISRO science team at the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad.

He said the company is likely to opt for a monthly consumer broadband plan that may cost around Rs 3,000, much higher than the plans offered by companies such as Jio, Airtel, and BSNL , but still aggressive from a satcom perspective. Speaking on the sidelines of a review meeting of BSNL here, he said, 'Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services.' However, considering that the company's global customer footprint is to the tune of 50 lakh users, the Indian number will still be highly significant for the company if it hits peak. Satcom services are expected to target rural and remote areas, where BSNL is known to have a significant presence. A govt official mentioned that the limit on Starlink connections will be due to its existing network capacity. Starlink has a lowearth orbit constellation of 4,408 satellites, which orbit the earth at a distance of about 540-570 km. It is expected to have a 600 Gbps throughput over India. The company's authorisation is valid for five years or until constellation end. After receiving a satcom licence from DoT and satellite authorisation from INSPACe, Starlink will now begin to build ground infrastructure. Chennai: The highly anticipated NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite, a collaborative Earth observation mission between the United States and India, is slated for launch on July 30 at 5:40 pm IST. The 2,400-kg satellite will be carried into orbit by ISRO's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-F16 (GSLV-F16) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. However, ISRO has clarified that while the launch is imminent, NISAR's dedicated scientific operations will not begin until approximately three months after it is successfully placed in orbit. This initial period will be critical for preparing the advanced observatory. According to ISRO, the NISAR mission is structured into distinct phases. Following the Launch Phase on July 30, the satellite will enter its Deployment Phase. This crucial stage involves the complex in-orbit unfurling of NISAR's 12-meter diameter reflector, a key component developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which will extend 9 meters away from the satellite. Subsequently, the mission will enter a 90-day Commissioning Phase, also known as "In-Orbit Checkout (IOC)." This period is solely dedicated to meticulously preparing the observatory for its scientific tasks. It will involve initial checks and calibrations of the satellite's core systems, followed by a thorough engineering checkout of the payload and instruments by JPL. Only after the successful completion of this commissioning phase will the Science Operations Phase commence, extending for the duration of the mission's life. During this phase, NISAR's science orbit will be precisely maintained through regular maneuvers, strategically planned to minimize interference with scientific observations. Extensive calibration and validation (CalVal) activities will also be ongoing. The detailed observation plan for both the L-band and S-band instruments, along with all necessary engineering activities, are being meticulously generated prior to launch through continuous coordination between JPL and ISRO. NISAR is poised to be a groundbreaking mission, providing unprecedented, high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night data to observe Earth's changing ecosystems, dynamic surfaces, and ice masses. This data is expected to revolutionize our understanding of natural hazards like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and landslides, as well as providing critical information for studies on climate change, agriculture, and water resources.

Singapore, Jul 29 (PT) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has invited Singapore-based investors and entrepreneurs to participate in India's development drive and listed a wide range of projects planned and being implemented in his state. Addressing investors at the 'Andhra Pradesh – Singapore Business Forum and Partnership Summit Roadshow" on Monday, he highlighted a wide range of opportunities in the ongoing development of infrastructure such as ports and airports, and the creation of Quantum Valley in Amravati. Naidu said Andhra Pradesh would contribute 160 GW of green energy to India's target of 500 GW of green and clean energy by 2030. Addressing over 500 investors on the second day of his visit to the city state, the chief minister said an Arcelor Mittal steel plant and a Google operation bentre are to be set up in Visakhapatnam. He categorically listed out the development of industrial corridors that are being led by Indian conglomerates, including Tata Group's Ratan Tata Innovation Hub. 'I am requesting Singapore entrepreneurs to participate in the development. We need more investments, and we need more and more entrepreneurs. We need your support for the development, and India is the best and a safe place for investment," remarked Naidu. At the event, he spoke widely about deep tech, electronics, semiconductors, green hydrogen, logistics, ports, airports, inland waterways, pharma, biotechnology and tourism. Omar Shazad, Group CEO of Singapore-based engineering company Meinhardt, which has over 100 projects in India, said, 'The chief minister's presentation at the roadshow was incredibly inspiring." 'There are a lot of opportunities for Singapore businesses to participate both in the infrastructure space and also the adjacent real estate development, industrial, as well as data centre," Omar told PTI. He noted that Naidu has clearly spelt out the different priorities and aspects that are going to come through in Amaravati, the futuristic city in Andhra Pradesh that the chief minister is ambitiously working on and is designed to mirror Singapore's urban and industrial development programmes.
