Samajwadi Party expels 3 MLAs accused of cross-voting in 2024 RS polls
The three lawmakers, Gosaiganj MLA Abhay Singh, Gauriganj MLA Rakesh Pratap Singh, and Unchahar MLA and former chief whip Manoj Kumar Pandey, are also among the seven who voted in favour of BJP candidates during the Rajya Sabha elections in February 2024. The cross-voting had helped the BJP win 8 out of the 10 seats, though the SP had the numbers to claim at least three seats.
The SP said the 'grace period' given to these legislators for a change of heart had expired. There is no room in the party for individuals who act against public welfare or its core ideological framework.
The SP announced the expulsion of the three legislators on X, accusing them of supporting forces that are anti-farmer, anti-women, anti-youth, anti-business, anti-employment, and against the rights of the marginalised.
'Samajwadi Party expels the following MLAs from the party in public interest for supporting communal divisive negativity and anti-farmer, women, youth, business, employed and 'anti-PDA' ideology, contrary to the politics of socialist harmony and positive ideology. MLA Gosaiganj Abhay Singh, MLA Gauriganj Rakesh Pratap Singh and MLA Unchahar Manoj Kumar Pandey,' the party said in a statement.
The grace period for the other four legislators who had supported the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections has not ended due to good behaviour, it said.
These four legislators include Bisauli MLA Ashutosh Maurya, Kalpi MLA Vinod Chaturvedi, Chail MLA Puja Pal and Jalalpur MLA Rakesh Pandey.
SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand said the three legislators had been working against the PDA [Pichda (backward), Dalit, Alpsankyhak (minority)] and had been speaking in favour of the wrongdoings of the BJP. 'They were given time to improve but unfortunately, they continued to speak against PDA, hence this action was taken by the party,' Chand said.
The SP had fielded three candidates – incumbent MP Jaya Bachchan, former chief secretary Alok Ranjan and Dalit leader Ramji Lal Suman - for the February 2024 elections. Only Jaya Bachchan and Ramjilal Suman won while Alok Ranjan lost due to cross voting. At the time, the rebel MLAs had claimed that the SP leadership hadn't allowed them to visit the Ram Lalla temple in Ayodhya on an invitation from UP assembly speaker Satish Mahana. After their rebellion, some of these MLAs visited the Ram Temple.

Cong, BJP allege conspiracy, security lapse
Kochi/Thrissur: Alleging a conspiracy behind the jailbreak of rape-and-murder case convict Govindachamy, opposition leader V D Satheeshan on Friday said the criminal received assistance from inside and outside Kannur Central Prison. Satheeshan said it was unbelievable that a person with one hand could cut through the jail cell window bars, climb out and escape over such a high wall using a cloth. Such an incident hasn't been seen even in Tarzan movies, he said. He said the jailbreak incident was an embarrassment for state govt. "Jail authorities came to know of Govindachamy's escape only at 5am and police were informed by 7am. It was the vigilance of ordinary people that led to the fugitive's capture," he said. "Opposition repeatedly highlighted security lapses in Kannur central jail. Criminals, including those accused in the TP murder case, are being provided with all kinds of assistance by govt and jail authorities there. The accused in TP case are given parole and food of their choice. These prisoners themselves decide the jail menu. Alcohol and drugs are readily available there. Additionally, these inmates run drug trafficking and gang operations from within the jail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Amazing Hotel Swimming Pools Learn More Undo They use the latest phones. Kannur central jail has become a haven for criminals," he alleged. BJP demands judicial probe Meanwhile, BJP state general secretary M T Ramesh alleged that a powerful mafia, with links to ruling CPM, was controlling the affairs of Kannur central jail and Govindachamy was able to escape from that high-security prison with the mafia's help. He demanded a judicial probe into the operations of mafias in state jails and into the circumstances that led to Govindachamy's jailbreak. "It is clear that Govindachamy received help from within the jail and outside. The incident is a clear manifestation of the failure of jail department controlled by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan," he said.

Telangana led way in caste census, BJP trying to derail BC empowerment: Ponnam Prabhakar
New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 25 (UNI) Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Friday said the Congress government in Telangana has taken decisive steps to implement a caste census despite not being in power at the Centre, and condemned BJP leaders for attempting to undermine the process. Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi after a meeting with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, Prabhakar said Rahul Gandhi had emphasised the need for a caste census during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and promised to implement it if voted to power. Telangana, he said, took the lead by initiating the caste census on February 4, 2024. Despite delays due to the Lok Sabha elections, the state government successfully completed the enumeration with 3.5 crore people voluntarily participating. The collected data, comprising over 80 crore documents, was digitised, reviewed by a subcommittee, and approved by the state cabinet. The resulting legislation to implement 42 per cent reservation for BCs in education and local bodies was passed and sent to the Governor, and later to the President for approval on April 30, 2025. Prabhakar slammed Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP leaders for opposing the bill and accused them of betraying the Backward Classes. 'What has BJP done more than us for BCs? Instead of supporting this historic move, they are trying to spread misinformation and dilute our efforts,' he said, citing BJP's past opposition to the Mandal Commission and social justice policies. He also questioned why BJP, while claiming to support BCs, failed to appoint a BC as the Leader of the Opposition in Telangana or maintain BC leadership in their own party. 'Our Congress party stands as the brand ambassador of social justice. We are not blaming any party, but facts must be examined,' he said. He urged BJP leaders to stop creating divisions and instead support the caste census and reservations for BCs. 'This is not just about Telangana, but a nationwide movement to ensure social justice,' he said, reiterating the Congress' commitment to fight for the rights of weaker sections. Ministers Konda Surekha and Vakiti Srihari were also present during the interaction. UNI VV ARN

Congress women delegation meets Guv, seeks appointments in state women's commission
Ranchi: Jharkhand Pradesh Mahila Congress's president Gunjan Singh led a delegation to meet governor Santosh Gangwar on Friday to submitted a memorandum urging appointment of the State Women Commission, which is lying defunct since long. They stressed the need for a functional commission to address women's rights and ensure justice. In their memorandum, they highlighted the increase in crimes against women across the nation, citing several horrific incidents from repeated assaults in Delhi, a mass gang rape of a student on a beach in Odisha, to the brutal rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur, and a recent case in Uttar Pradesh where a minor girl was raped in a moving car and her companion thrown out, resulting in his death. "Every hour, around 45 women face crimes in our country. We cannot afford to remain silent to women safety in Jharkhand too," Singh stated. The memorandum demanded strict action in all cases of rape and harassment, govt accountability for women's safety, and the creation of a strong national policy for the protection of young girls. Calling for immediate and serious attention, Gunjan emphasized that the establishment and activation of the State Women Commission is crucial in addressing the growing crisis and restoring public faith in justice and governance. Meanwhile, the State Commission for Women, a constitutional body meant to protect women's rights, has remained non-functional since June 7, 2020, leading to a backlog of over 4,000 unresolved cases.
