Joe Root is heading for top spot and why it's not all about spin - particularly at Old Trafford: BUMBLE AT THE TEST
England are in a commanding position at the end of day three of the fourth Test against India, leading by 186 runs and wickets still in hand. It feels a matter of when, not if, they take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, but day three in itself provided plenty of talking points - including Joe Root 's latest sensational century. Elsewhere, Ben Stokes triggered injury fears when he left the field with what turned out to be cramp as he seemed to return to form with the bat, and India's spinners have impressed - despite England piling on the runs. Ben Stokes' side will now look to add to their total even further on Saturday when he and Liam Dawson return to the crease, before having another bowl and looking to wrap up proceedings. In the meantime, our man David Lloyd was at Old Trafford to dissect all the big talking points, from Root's form, to Stokes' resilience, to India's seamers. Mail Sport presents the latest edition of BUMBLE ON THE TEST. Joe heading for top spot It was business as usual for Joe Root Ltd. In perfect batting conditions, he was never going to miss out on scoring a 38th Test century. He just played the percentages and never moved out of his comfort zone. He is now second on the all-time list of Test run-scorers and is in relentless pursuit of Sachin Tendulkar for the top spot. There is no reason to believe he won't get there. Beware a crack-in-the-box! I had to chuckle when Ben Stokes was felled by a delivery from Mohammed Siraj, which hit him amidships. But he's absolutely won the Lottery being hit there by Siraj rather than my misfortune of being banjaxed by Jeff Thomson. My protector split in half and everything that should have been protected was trapped between the cracked bits. I trust Ben's box is more adequate than it was in my day. Pitching it just right India's seamers have come under the spotlight here. They have been substandard. But I have seen most games here this summer and this pitch has a lovely even bounce, a pleasant pace and doesn't offer any movement. Don't expect any fireworks on days four and five either, as this pitch doesn't break up, it gets more solid. It's a chief executive's dream because it guarantees revenue for the full five days. It's not all about spin There was an excellent passage of play just after lunch when India's spinners were bowling in tandem. I say spinners but there was no turn. Ollie Pope played for spin against Washington Sundar but edged to slip and Harry Brook decided to go walk about down the pitch and was stumped. It just goes to show it doesn't have to spin because flight and change of pace are real assets. Wonderful Wasim It sure has been good to catch up with some of my former Lancashire team-mates this week, like Sir Clive Lloyd, Farokh Engineer and Jack Simmons. The good old days! And I was delighted to see Wasim Akram ring the bell on Friday. He had a massive impact at the club and his nickname in the dressing room was 'King'. I often get asked about my best-ever team. I always start with Wasim at No 8. Ton-up Rehan's lucky 13 What a fabulous effort from Rehan Ahmed to take 13 wickets and hit a century for Leicestershire against Derbyshire, the first Englishman to achieve that feat since Ian Botham in the 1980 Jubilee Test. I saw the 20-year-old here earlier this season and he looked a superb player. He is obviously going in the right direction. It is good news for England, as having a leg spinner is always a big advantage, especially overseas. Keep on rockin', Dave It was Manchester's Northern Quarter for me on Thursday night. Thomas Street is pedestrianised, and cafes and bars spill out onto the road, a bit like Nice and Monaco… I stopped at the Bay Horse Tavern before karaoke at The Millstone. Everybody had a go but Dave in the electric blue suit stole the show with Suspicious Minds. He is 87 years old but still has all the moves.

Martin reveals long-held desire to link up with Crystal Palace ace as Rangers boss hopes to bring winger to Ibrox
Rangers boss Russell Martin has admitted he is a long-time admirer of potential transfer target Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. Martin confirmed his interest in the Crystal Palace winger after it was revealed the Ibrox club have made an enquiry about taking the 22-year-old on loan with a possible option to buy. Rak-Sakyi has played 10 first-team games for Palace, and scored seven goals in 36 appearances for Sheffield United on loan last season. The England Under-21 international previously hit 15 goals during a season-long loan with Charlton. When asked about the reports, former Southampton manager Martin told Sky Sports News: 'There's a lot of players we'll be linked with. Some wide of the mark, some very close and some spot-on. 'He's a player I liked at Southampton, we tried to take him there and it didn't quite happen. 'So, he's a player I like and I think he's a player the recruitment staff like. But, how far that's gone, I'm not too sure.' Asked if the winger fitted the profile of players he is looking for, Martin added: 'He's a really good player. We look at all sorts of different profiles who we think can help the team. It doesn't necessarily have to be the one type of profile. 'Players are very different, we just need players with the right mentality that are desperate to come and play here. We will see where we end up in four weeks' time.' Meanwhile, Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell is confident the Ibrox side are now in pole position to progress in their Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos. They beat the Greeks 2-0 earlier this week and will travel to Athens in a commanding position for Wednesday's second leg. Rothwell, 30, impressed on his competitive debut, and believes Rangers should fancy their chances of finishing the job. 'I think we have to now, yeah,' he said. 'At 2-0, it's a good scoreline, especially in this format. 'So we'll go out there and obviously we won't be looking to defend it. We'll try to win the game and score as many goals as we can. The win can be huge. 'The manager said in his press conference it was not going to be a season-defining game, but we wanted to put on a show and really show how he wants to do things. 'I think we managed to do that, controlled the game as we like to do and were just a bit disappointed we didn't go and probably kill the game off a little bit more. 'But we can't complain too much. It's a win and we'll take a lead over there next week.' Rangers should have been behind before 19-year-old winger Findlay Curtis opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. After a nervy first half, they had to rely on the brilliance of Jack Butland to make a series of vital saves to keep the game at 0-0. Rothwell, who was signed from Bournemouth in the summer, was impressed by his first taste of a European night at Ibrox. 'Loved it,' he said. 'Obviously you hear stories from the outside but, when you actually get out there and experience it, it's fantastic. 'I'm sure the fans are going to be behind us in every single game and we'll need them. 'There will be times where it might be a bit tough for us, but I'm sure they'll get behind us and then get us over the finish line. 'You can really see what the manager wants us to do and how we want to play. It was obviously another good test for us and we came through it in the end.'

Luke Littler, 18, kisses girlfriend Faith, 19, during walk-on for nail-biting World Matchplay Darts quarter-final win
LUKE LITTLER planted a kiss on new girlfriend Faith as the darts star continued his quest to become the youngest ever Triple Crown holder. The world champion, 18, later beat Andrew Gilding 16-14 in the quarter-finals at Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Friday night. 2 As the packed arena roared, and the tension built for his crucial clash, the camera panned to Littler making his grand entrance. And his partner Faith Millar, 19, looked every inch the proud girlfriend. Just before stepping onto the oche, Littler leaned in and gave Faith a tender smooch right there in front of thousands of screaming fans and millions watching live on TV. It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment of affection that immediately sent social media into a frenzy, with fans cooing over the couple's cute display. And the kiss brought Littler good luck in the end, as he narrowly beat world No.28 Gilding. Gilding, 54, made it close, going within one leg of Littler, before the darts prodigy hit a perfect 11-darter to win it. Littler hit EIGHTEEEN 180s, with an average of 103 as he booked a place in the semi-final against either Gerwyn Price and Josh Rock. Littler said: "That last leg I just had to stay focused and get over the line. "He won a few on the bounce when I was sat on 15 legs but I just had to do a professional job in the end. "I didn't really panic. Andrew started to win a few legs, but that last leg against the darts as well, I just had to get over the line. Luke Littler stuns World Matchplay Darts with one of his greatest ever comebacks against Jermaine Wattimena "Andrews does what he does. He never goes out of rhythm. It's the same throw by throw and try and match him." Littler and girlfriend Faith were first pictured together in March. The 19-year-old is a beautician who met Littler in February. The couple jetted off with Littler's family to Spain last month. Littler previously dated Eloise Milburn, who cheered him on at his World Darts Championship debut in 2023. But the pair split after just 10 months in July 2024 after struggling to make time for each other. 2 The World No.2 picked up a Premier League title back in 2024 and followed it up by becoming the youngest ever world champion in January. 'The Nuke' now needs to win the iconic major at the Winter Gardens to add his name to another list of icons. Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson, and most recently Luke Humphries are the only four players to have completed the prestigious feat. Taylor, 16-times world champion, is still the only player to have completed the 'Triple Crown' in a singular darting season. List of all-time Darts World Champions BELOW is a list of darts world champions by year. The list does not include winners from the pre-Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) era or BDO world champions. That means Raymond van Barneveld, for example, is only listed once - Barney also won four BDO titles - and none of Eric Bristow's five BDO titles are included. 1994 - Dennis Priestley 1995 - Phil Taylor 1996 - Phil Taylor (2) 1997 - Phil Taylor (3) 1998 - Phil Taylor (4) 1999 - Phil Taylor (5) 2000 - Phil Taylor (6) 2001 - Phil Taylor (7) 2002 - Phil Taylor (8) 2003 - John Part 2004 - Phil Taylor (9) 2005 - Phil Taylor (10) 2006 - Phil Taylor (11) 2007 - Raymond van Barneveld 2008 - John Part (2) 2009 - Phil Taylor (12) 2010 - Phil Taylor (13) 2011 - Adrian Lewis 2012 - Adrian Lewis (2) 2013 - Phil Taylor (14) 2014 - Michael van Gerwen 2015 - Gary Anderson 2016 - Gary Anderson (2) 2017 - Michael van Gerwen (2) 2018 - Rob Cross 2019 - Michael van Gerwen (3) 2020 - Peter Wright 2021 - Gerwyn Price 2022 - Peter Wright (2) 2023 - Michael Smith 2024 - Luke Humphries 2025 - Luke Littler Most World Titles 14 - Phil Taylor 3 - Michael van Gerwen 2 - John Part, Adrian Lewis, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright 1 - Dennis Priestley, Raymond van Barneveld, Rob Cross, Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith, Luke Humphries, Luke Littler
