Jordanian army shoots down two drones in failed drug smuggling attempt
The Jordanian Southern Military Zone foiled a drug smuggling attempt on its western front this Wednesday morning using two drones.
A military source from the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces – Arab Army (JAF) said, 'Border Guard forces in the Southern Military Zone, in coordination with military security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department, managed to thwart an attempt to smuggle narcotics using two drones that tried to cross the border.'
He explained that the rules of engagement were applied after the drones were detected and tracked, and they were dealt with and brought down inside Jordanian territory. The seized items were handed over to the relevant authorities.
The source affirmed that the JAF remain fully committed to utilizing all their capabilities and maintaining the highest levels of readiness and vigilance to firmly confront anyone who attempts to compromise the nation's security or target its resources, and to prevent any drug smuggling attempts across the border in order to safeguard Jordan's security and stability.

Shihadeh revealed that 40,000 salvage vehicles entered Jordan last year under special exceptions. As a result, the government decided to regulate the sector by imposing a specific technical standard. Additionally, the import of used electric vehicles, including from the current model year, has been banned for the past three years. He emphasized that the decision benefits citizens in two key ways: Lower vehicle prices Higher quality standards for imported cars, which must now meet clear Jordanian specifications and originate from known manufacturers. Shihadeh stressed that all citizens will benefit from this decision. While some may sell their current vehicles at a lower price, they will also be able to buy better vehicles at reduced costs, ensuring that everyone gains. He added that when customs duties are reduced by 27%, 28%, or even 35%, along with regulatory stability and unified tax brackets, this will stimulate demand, revitalize the auto market, and enhance purchasing power by driving prices down.

Jordan cuts customs duties on imported vehicles
The Jordanian Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan, approved on Saturday an amended special tax system for 2025 that reduces total taxes (both general and special) on vehicles. This comprehensive structural reform aims to significantly lower costs for citizens. The decision includes substantial reductions in overall taxes and customs duties on vehicles, addressing financial and structural imbalances in the sector. It also seeks to diversify vehicle options by lowering acquisition costs, complementing ongoing government efforts to reduce expenses and improve quality of life. Under the amendment, total taxes on different vehicle types will be reduced as follows: Gasoline cars: from 71 percent to 51 percent, a reduction of 28 percent Hybrid cars: from 60 percent to 39 percent, a reduction of 35 percent The special tax on electric vehicles will be fixed and unified at 27 percent for all categories, regardless of vehicle value or type. This replaces the previous graduated tax system, which planned to raise taxes up to 55 percent over three years, announced late last year. Customs duties on scooters and motorcycles will be reduced from 45 percent to 33 percent, a decrease of 26 percent, aiming to encourage their use, reduce fuel dependence, and help ease traffic congestion and environmental pollution. The General Customs Department will begin implementing the new tax system starting Sunday morning, June 29, 2025.
