Two Killed, Six Wounded In LA After-Party Shooting; Police Investigation Underway

The identities of the deceased have not yet been fully released by police. Two people were killed and six others left injured in a shooting that occurred during an after-party in downtown Los Angeles overnight on Sunday. According to KTLA, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that the incident took place around 1 am on August 4. Authorities confirmed that the gunfire broke out near 14th Place and Griffith Avenue, an area reportedly hosting multiple parties at the time. Police had already patrolled the location earlier in the evening, around 11 pm, after observing an individual entering an unauthorised gathering. The LAPD said they cleared out the event, which had more than 50 people present. During that sweep, one attendee was arrested for carrying a firearm. Despite this intervention, officers were called back to the same venue following a radio alert about shots being fired. When they arrived, they found that eight individuals had been struck by gunfire. Two victims succumbed to their injuries, while six others were left wounded. One of the surviving victims is in critical condition, according to an LAPD spokesperson speaking with KTLA 5. 'It was pretty clear and loud… You knew that if those bullets landed in somebody, that they weren't walking away from the situation," said local resident Tyrone Laney in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. The identities of the deceased have not yet been fully released by police. However, officials confirmed that the victims included a man and a 52-year-old woman. One died at the scene, while the other was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. Some of the injured victims were admitted to California Hospital Medical Center for treatment. One of the victims has been identified as 29-year-old Gregory Derisso, according to his father, Judner Derisso. He described Gregory as a dedicated music producer and the father of three young children, all under the age of five. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the party was promoted online as an 'unofficial after-party" for the Hard Summer festival and featured house and techno music. An Instagram post advertising the event reportedly listed the names of DJs scheduled to perform. No arrests have been made so far. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the shooting. Get breaking news, in-depth analysis, and expert perspectives on everything from geopolitics to diplomacy and global trends. Rapper Soulja Boy Arrested In LA Hours After 35th Birthday Bash

Soulja Boy's recent arrest came just four months after a jury ordered him to pay $4 million to his former assistant, who had accused him of sexual assault in 2021. Rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, best known by his stage name Soulja Boy, was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on Sunday, August 3. According to multiple reports, the 35-year-old rapper was arrested at around 2:50 AM after the police stopped a car he was riding near Melrose and Genesse. Soulja was a passenger in that vehicle. During the traffic stop, the officers found a firearm inside the car, as reported by TMZ. He was booked on suspicion of illegally possessing a gun. Online inmate information further revealed that Soulja was officially booked under a felony charge at 6:18 AM that day. However, it still remains unclear as to why the traffic stop was made in the first place. Neither the LAPD nor the rapper's team has shared any official statement on the arrest. Soulja Boy Was Arrested Hours After He Celebrated His 35th Birthday Soulja was arrested merely hours after he celebrated his 35th birthday with his dear ones at a nightclub in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 2. He shared glimpses of the celebrations on his Instagram account. He had another reason to celebrate, as earlier that day, he released new music during a Twitch stream. It was his first release after Soulja dropped his album, The Influence, in February this year. Soulja Boy Was Accused Of Sexual Assault And Abuse By His Former Assistant The 35-year-old rapper's recent arrest came just four months after he lost a legal case. In April, Soulja was ordered by a California jury to pay $4 million to his former assistant, who had accused him of sexual assault and abuse in 2021. Back then, the woman, who was identified as Jane Doe, also claimed that Soulja held her hostage, subjected her to a hostile work environment and failed to pay her the salary she was supposed to get. While speaking with Rolling Stone four months back, Soulja said, 'The district attorney never filed charges. I was never charged or convicted of this, criminally. So, to be accused of this civilly is beyond me. I've never done any of the things they're accusing me of. I just feel like this is very unfair." Moreover, his attorney had mentioned back then that the evidence for this case does not support the verdict. 'It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial. Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case," his attorney shared through an official statement. Meanwhile, the woman's legal team mentioned back then that they were 'looking forward to moving on to the punitive damages phase of the case." The case will now move to its second phase, where it will be determined if the rapper has to pay more to the woman in punitive damages. Carter Hart's NHL future in limbo as NHL insider blasts return rumors post-Hockey Canada verdict

The future of Carter Hart in the NHL is unclear (Getty Images) The NHL future of Carter Hart remains shrouded in uncertainty, even after his acquittal in the high-profile Hockey Canada sexual assault case. While fans continue to debate whether the former Philadelphia Flyers goalie deserves another shot on the ice, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has strongly advised against making any assumptions. Elliotte Friedman says it's 'irresponsible' to speculate on Carter Hart's NHL future post-acquittal Speaking on his 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman addressed the growing speculation around Hart's potential return to the league. Despite being found not guilty along with four other players in the 2018 Hockey Canada case, Hart's status remains unresolved in the eyes of the NHL. 'I think it is really irresponsible to speculate until we have a legal ruling on this,' Friedman said. 'I don't think anything more needs to be said about that until we know if they're eligible to play. I just don't think it's smart to speculate on where they could play.' The Mid Summer Check-In Across The NHL | 32 Thoughts The NHL has made it clear that acquittal does not equate to reinstatement. The league released a statement acknowledging that the players' behavior—though not criminally punishable—was still 'very disturbing' and 'unacceptable.' The league added that it would be 'reviewing and considering the judge's findings' before making any decisions about eligibility. Public relations risk keeps teams like Oilers away from Carter Hart amid unresolved eligibility While Hart is technically an unrestricted free agent, teams are hesitant. Analyst Avry Lewis-McDougall shut down rumors linking Hart to the Edmonton Oilers during the Fanatics View Hockey Show, stating bluntly: 'It's a hard no.' He cited both the unresolved nature of Hart's status and the inevitable media firestorm. 'Teams don't want the PR headache,' he said. 'You should be looking at somebody you can bring in with less baggage.' With the Oilers needing a reliable goalie after two consecutive Stanley Cup Final losses, Lewis-McDougall emphasized that Hart's off-ice issues make him an unsuitable option—even if he's cleared to return. For now, Carter Hart's road back to the NHL remains a legal, ethical, and reputational maze.
