IIT student and Goa origin girl is India's youngest female Ironman
Renee Noronha had heard those words for the first time in New Zealand last year, but in Germany early this month, it had a special meaning.
In just about 15 months, the 19-year-old student of IIT Madras chalked off an amazing two and half hours from her previous time of 16:35:47 hrs to successfully complete the Ironman Hamburg European Championship in just 14 hours.
The championship, one of Europe's most competitive endurance events, includes a 3.8km swim, 180km cycling, and a full 42.2km run, all to be done sequentially and completed in 17 hours.
'Nothing is easy for endurance events, particularly Ironman, so I had to keep going,' Renee told TOI over a phone call from London where she is currently based.
'This was all about finishing the event, so after the swim and cycle, you still have to complete a full marathon. In Hamburg, when I started the (42-km) run, I knew I was going to finish it. Before reaching the finish line, I pulled out the India flag and held it above.
It was a superb feeling. I am proud of representing the country at global events.'
Renee is no ordinary sportsperson. Transitioning from a professional gymnast between the ages of six and sixteen to an endurance athlete, the teenager with roots in Goa has completed two Ironmans in as many years.

Last year, she finished fourth in her age group, and at 18 years and 49 days, was the youngest full distance Ironman finisher at Ironman New Zealand.
She is also India's youngest female Ironman.
'It was the craziest feeling ever, almost felt like a dream when I crossed the finish line for the first time. It was cold in New Zealand, the weather wasn't conducive, and it started raining some kilometres from the finish line. I had to push myself with all my strength.
When I crossed the finish line, the announcement came as a relief. Renee, they said, 'you are an Ironman'.'
With family roots in Goa – Santa Cruz to be precise – Renee was born in Mumbai and moved to London last year when her father, John Paul, secured a job. Formerly a professional artistic gymnast, she is currently pursuing a bachelor of science degree in data science and applications from IIT Madras but her mind remains fixated on making it big in the world of endurance sports.
'I was 16 when I took part in the Ironman Kids event in Goa (in 2022) and finished first in my age group. I was already training for triathlon around that time and did an Olympic distance run. At first, it seemed like a sprint, and I felt like doing more. That's when we turned our attention to a full Ironman,' said Renee.
Not everyone is aware of Ironman. A niche sector sees the endurance test with majestic awe; others are aware that it's a tough event yet have little idea of what one has to endure to cross the finish line within the stipulated time.
'Endurance sports are not only for the elite, but for anyone willing to push their limits,' said Renee.
In Hamburg, Renee finished 15th in her age group of 18 to 24 with timings of 1:30:33 for the 3.8 km swim, 6:58:54 for 180 km bike ride and 5:16:45 to complete the 42.2 km full marathon. It wasn't easy, particularly in the end, but Renee knew she had not signed up for anything that could be achieved without breaking sweat.
Completing Ironman when she is still in her teens is commendable.
Even more impressively, she balances this pursuit with academic rigour as a second-year student at IIT Madras, one of India's premier institutes of technology.
'It's all about managing your time and I change the intensity every week,' said Renee. 'Ironman is not just about finishing a race. It's about showing young people across India, particularly girls, that endurance sports are for us too. The discipline, the resilience, the self-belief you build in this sport changes who you are.'

She successfully cleared the qualifying round and reached the final, where participants from Malaysia and Japan secured top spots. Her father, Anand, expressed pride in her determination. "We used basic equipment for her training in Tapi. To our surprise, she performed remarkably well on the international stage." Draymond Green reveals what Golden State Warriors must do after pairing Stephen Curry with Jimmy Butler
(Image Source - Getty Images) Draymond Green believes that leveraging the Stephen Curry–Jimmy Butler duo is just the start. With Jimmy Butler joining in mid-February, the Golden State Warriors have surged into the second round after a rocky first half. Now, Draymond Green says it's time to turn attention to free agency and smart roster adjustments. As Kevon Looney leaves and the frontcourt requires attention, the Golden State Warriors are ready to reshape their offseason approach. Here's why Draymond Green thinks the hard work is finished and what's on the horizon. Jimmy Butler helped Golden State Warriors go 23-7 after trade After the trade on February 6, 2025, Jimmy Butler joined the team through a five-team deal, which completely changed the course of Golden State's season. The Golden State Warriors turned things around, going 23-7 after the trade and clinching a play-in spot, eventually taking down Houston in the playoffs. Draymond Green mentioned on his podcast that acquiring Jimmy Butler was the crucial step, and now the groundwork is laid. It's essential to smartly build around this experienced duo to keep the momentum going. On the first day of free agency, Kevon Looney signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, marking the end of his decade-long stint with the Golden State Warriors (599 games, three championships). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo This move indicates that Golden State is now focusing on adding stretch-big players. Al Horford (39) has become a top target, providing both spacing and rim protection. If that doesn't happen, Chris Boucher might be a budget-friendly option, and they are also looking at role players like Gary Payton II and De'Anthony Melton. Golden State is heading into this offseason with about $170.5 million already committed, and they need to keep an eye on the second tax apron ($207.8M), especially if they're looking to bring in Al Horford through the taxpayer mid-level exception ($5.7M). On another note, Jonathan Kuminga (22) is set to become a restricted free agent, with a possible $7.9 million qualifying offer and a cap hold of $22.9 million. GM Mike Dunleavy suggests focusing on versatile, two-way players who can spread the floor and defend, instead of going for one-dimensional guys. Also Read: "I don't know what's going on" — Giannis Antetokounmpo stunned as Milwaukee Bucks bring in Myles Turner Now, the Golden State Warriors need to make some smart additions, find a veteran big to take Kevon Looney's place, ensure role players have versatility, and keep an eye on the cap space considering Kuminga's situation. If the front office and coaching staff can pull off these strategic upgrades, the veteran core might just have one last shot at a deep playoff run before their opportunity slips away. "I don't know what's going on" — Giannis Antetokounmpo stunned as Milwaukee Bucks bring in Myles Turner
(Image Source - Getty Images) Giannis Antetokounmpo didn't say much—but his meme said it all. As the Milwaukee Bucks waived an injured Damian Lillard to make way for Myles Turner, Giannis's viral 'I don't know what's going on' post lit up social media. A larger story behind that obscure response, however, is emotional baggage, locker-room chemistry and a roster gamble fast becoming salvaging or negating the championship aspirations of the Milwaukee Bucks . Damian Lillard's Achilles injury and contract stretch open the door for Myles Turner's arrival On July lst, 2025, the Milwaukee Bucks hit the news with a decision to waive nine-time All-Star, Damian Lillard, who is injured at the moment, having a torn Achilles. They decided to extend the rest of his contract that is worth ~$113 million over five years. This signing in cap strategy provided the room needed in order to sign the Myles Turner four year 107 million contract, which has a player option and a 15 % trade kicker. Turner is arguably one of the top rim protectors (averaged 2.0 blocks per game last season) and he is a master of floor spacing- this signing is a strategic action by the front court to make the best years of Giannis even better. While the Bucks' front office is promoting this as a bold strategy to shift the team's title chances, NBA insider Chris Haynes reveals that Giannis is "not thrilled" with the decision to release Lillard. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo He posted a meme of himself smoking a cigar, captioned "Mood 💯," just minutes after the Lillard waiver was announced. The timing and tone hint at more than just confusion—it points to some emotional distress at the highest levels. With Turner joining the team, he fills the defensive gap left by Brook Lopez, who moved to the Clippers earlier in free agency. He averaged 15.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and led the league with 2.0 blocks during the Pacers' Finals run this season. Yet, letting go of Lillard—a significant addition from two seasons ago—could shake up the team's chemistry. As Giannis reacts publicly and trade talks heat up, the Bucks find themselves at a critical juncture: will this frontcourt gamble lift the team's energy. Also Read: New York Knicks pass on Dawn Staley as finalist after eye-catching early conversation The Bucks clearly banked on Myles Turner's defensive prowess and cap-clearing magic to extend their title window with Giannis Antetokounmpo. But Giannis's candid post—'I don't know what's going on right now'—reveals a deep emotional divide. If the Bucks want to stay in the running, building unity and understanding will be as important as revamping the roster. If not, even the most carefully planned free-agent moves could fall apart due to superstar dissatisfaction. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
