Mopani masters' champs crowned

LIMPOPO – KCE Masters and United Masters FC have emerged as champions of the Mopani Masters League in Streams A and B, respectively.
KCE secured their Stream A title with a 2-0 victory over Julesburg Masters at the Mafarana Sports Ground over the weekend. Meanwhile, United Masters clinched the Stream B title with a narrow 1-0 win over Matlule Masters on their home turf.
The top nine teams from each stream will now advance to the league playoffs, scheduled to take place on June 22 and 29 at Nkowankowa Stadium. The overall league champion for both streams will be crowned on June 29.
KCE Masters captain Lloyd Mtebule expressed pride in his team's achievement, especially considering the team was only established in May last year.
'We're excited to win Stream A. Our goal now is to claim the overall league title. The boys are working hard to bring the trophy home,' said Mtebule.
On the other side, United Masters team manager Cooper Rikhotso confidently predicted victory in the final stage.
'We're taking the trophy, no doubt about it. There's no real competition in the league for us. We've beaten KCE in all four of our previous encounters, so they know what's coming,' said Rikhotso.
The overall champions will walk away with a R30 000 cash prize, along with medals and a trophy.

British Open could return to Trump's Turnberry

British Open organisers the Royal and Ancient (R&A) refused to rule out a return to US President Donald Trump's Turnberry course if infrastructure challenges were overcome. The Scottish course, which was bought by Trump in 2014, has not hosted the only major outside the US since 2012. In the wake of the storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters in January 2021, the R&A said the British Open would not return to Turnberry until "the focus will be on the championship" rather than the course's proprietor. Mark Darbon, new chief executive of the R&A, straight-batted the prospect of awarding Turnberry the championship until significant upgrades are made around the course on Scotland's west coast. "We love the golf course but we've got some big logistical challenges there," Darbon told a press conference ahead of the 153rd British Open, which begins at Royal Portrush on Thursday. "You see the scale of their setup here and we've got some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry. "We've explicitly not taken it out of our pool of venues but we'd need to address those logistical challenges should we return." Darbon revealed he had a meeting earlier in the year with Trump's son, Eric, but said no pressure had been put on by the British government to fast track Turnberry's return to the Open Championship rotation. "We've spoken to them specifically about Turnberry and I think they've made it clear that the decision around where we take our championship rests with us," he added on government involvement. "I met a couple of months ago with Eric Trump and some of the leadership from the Trump golf organisation and from Turnberry. We had a really good discussion. "I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them." A return to Turnberry is highly unlikely before Trump's second term as president comes to an end in early 2029. The next two British Opens will be held at Birkdale and St. Andrews respectively, with a venue for 2028 to be confirmed early next year. There could also be an addition to the current rota of 10 venues with the possibility the British Open could be played in the Republic of Ireland for the first time at Portmarnock, near Dublin. "Yes, we are thinking about Portmarnock," added Darbon. "We think it's a wonderful links golf course and we've been really encouraged by the support that we've had in principle from the Irish government to work with us to understand whether we could stage an Open Championship there in the future.

Image: @orlando[irates/X Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven are reportedly looking to bring in Orlando Pirates superstar Relebohile Mofoeng for R120 million. The talented winger has been linked to several clubs in Israel and Unites States. On Wednesday, Soccer Laduma revealed that PSV were looking to buy the Bafana Bafana attacker for €5.7 million. The Eredivisie powerhouse initially showing interest in Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners but decided to go for Mofokeng instead. 'R100 million is like a round figure. It's more than that! The amount they were negotiating for was initially R120 million. You know it's not exactly what you want that you get, and that's why they are talking about the R100 million, but it's believed to be more than that,' the insider told Soccer Laduma . If PSV sign Mofokeng for R120 million from Orlando Pirates, the 20-year-old could be the most expensive player bought in the PSL. 'There are different scouts from Holland who are believed to be working with recruiters for PSV. They enquired about Iqraam Rayners but it is believed that they are looking at a long-term investment now, and that's why they have opened up negotiations with Orlando Pirates for Rele Mofokeng,' the second insider revealed to Soccer Laduma. The 20-year-old is currently in Spain for pre-season. From the look of things, 'President Ya Ma 2000' could stay behind in Europe when Orlando Pirates return home from pre-season training. The Soweto giants have already sold Mohau Nkota to Saudi club. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Ernie Els pulls out of The Open Championship

Four-time Major winner Ernie Els has withdrawn from The Open Championship just days before the action is due to begin at Royal Portrush. This is the second successive year that the South African legend will have a WD next to his name at The Open, but the first ever in which he has failed to compete for the Claret Jug when eligible. Els, now 55, who still has the option of teeing it up until the age of 60, pulled out of the running due to a bad back at Royal Troon 12 months ago after carding an 11-over 82 in round one. Announcing the news, the R&A did not share a reason for Els's withdrawal this year. His replacement is South Korea's Si Woo Kim, who was first on the alternate list taken from last week's Official World Golf Ranking. The 'Big Easy' twice lifted the Claret Jug during his illustrious career, in 2002 and 2012, first triumphing in a four-man playoff at Muirfield following a pair of US Open victories in the 1990s before repeating the achievement at Royal Lytham & St Annes a decade later. Els missed the cut on his Open debut in 1989, but went on to play in every available edition of the championship between 1992 and 2023. During that time, he managed 11 top-10s outside of his wins before failing to play the weekend for just the second time in 2010 on what was his 20th appearance. Els found time to wish all those competing this week in Northern Ireland the best of luck, writing: 'Wishing all the contestants playing @theopen all the very best. Hope to see everyone next year at Birkdale. The Open Championship has meant so much to myself and our whole family through the years. Thank you to @therandagolf for your continued service to our sport!' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ernie Els (@ernieelsgolf) There will still be no fewer than 11 South Africans in the 156-player field this week. They are: Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Dean Burmester, Darren Fichardt, Thriston Lawrence, Dylan Naidoo, Bryan Newman (amateur), Shaun Norris, Louis Oosthuizen, Aldrich Potgieter, Daniel van Tonder and Justin Walters.
