Swiatek cruises, Osaka battles through in Montreal

Yahoo3 days ago
Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek cruised into the third round of the WTA Canadian Open on Wednesday as Naomi Osaka fought off two match points to advance with a three-set win over Liudmila Samsonova.
Swiatek, seeded second in her first tournament since her crushing victory over Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final, breezed past Chinese qualifier Guo Hanyu 6-3, 6-1, breaking Guo's serve six times.
Her untroubled tournament opener followed Osaka's battling victory over Samsonova.
The four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan saved back-to-back match points in the 10th game of the second set, and trailed 5-2 in the second-set tiebreaker on the way to a 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 triumph.
Osaka, now working with Tomasz Wiktorowski after announcing on Monday she had split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou, notched her first win over a top-20 player since she beat Karolina Muchova at the Australian Open.
But she had to dig deep for the win after surrendering early breaks in each of the first two sets.
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Samsonova served for the match at 5-4 in the second and led 40-15. The Russian fired a forehand long on her first match point and on her second a lackluster drop shot effort gave Osaka an opening and the Japanese star pounced.
Samsonova's double fault on break point allowed Osaka to level the set, and after storming back in the tiebreaker to force a third set Osaka took control early, breaking Samsonova twice on the way to a 4-1 lead.
"She definitely came out really hard and, for me, I was definitely overwhelmed and I didn't know if I should also be hitting winners," Osaka said.
"But after a while I just tried to keep the ball in court," added Osaka, who snapped a four-match losing streak in three-setters.
Osaka next faces Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, who beat Mexico's Renata Zarazua 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Australian Open champion Madison Keys, the sixth seed, opened her Canadian campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Laura Siegemund, avenging a third-round loss to the German at Wimbledon.

Lakers' Luka Doncic woke up to an important $222 million contract day

It's a big day in the future of Luka Doncic. August 2 means that contract restrictions on the Los Angeles Lakers' superstar are no longer in place after his trade from the Mavericks. Doncic can now sign a contract extension worth up to $222.4 million over four years that would begin in 2026-27. There's merit to a shorter-term deal, though, writes Hoops Rumors' Luke Adams. "While that four-year, $222.4MM extension is the most lucrative deal Doncic could lock in at this time, it may ultimately be in his best interests financially to sign a shorter-term deal," Adams writes. "If he agrees to a three-year, $160.8MM contract that includes a third-year player option, he'd have the ability to start his next contract in 2028, when he'll have 10 years of NBA experience and would qualify for a maximum salary worth 35% of the cap instead of his current 30%." MORE: LeBron James could turn into NBA's biggest competition with $200 million from Saudi Arabia There are others who agree with such a structure. 'The (two)-plus-one structure is the smartest move for a player in Luka's position,' an agent told Grant Afseth of 'It gives him the flexibility to hit that 10-year mark when he can sign a super-max. If I had to guess, that's what I expect him to do. That's what I'd advise.' The key for the Lakers at this point is reaching some kind of extension. In the unlikely scenario where no deal is reached, Doncic would be a free agent after the 2025-26 season. Doncic has EuroBasket coming up this summer with the Slovenian national team, but he's actually in L.A. soon for a Jordan Brand tour before suiting up for Slovenia. If Doncic and the Lakers are on the same page, it may not take long to get a deal done. Even if it takes a little while, though, the Lakers have made it clear they're Luka's team now. It'd be surprising to see him do anything other than sign a long-term deal in Los Angeles. MORE: Nikola Jokic nearly retired at shockingly young age, reveals former teammate

2 key Chiefs players struggling early in 2025 NFL training camp

The post 2 key Chiefs players struggling early in 2025 NFL training camp appeared first on ClutchPoints. While the Kansas City Chiefs are excited about a defensive player, they also have an offensive development in terms of a connection between the quarterback and a receiver. However, the latter involved a player who is one of two key Chiefs players struggling early in the 2025 NFL training camp. The Chiefs are trying to keep their magnificent dynasty rolling, but they will need all hands on board, especially from the wide receiver position. And two of their players expected to be in the rotation have already been hit by injuries. Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown slowed by injury Head coach Andy Reid said he doesn't think Brown's injury is serious, according to a post on X by Jeremy Bergman. Chiefs coach Andy Reid says WR Hollywood Brown left practice with an ankle injury. 'I don't think it's too bad, but we'll see.' Brown's injury history leaves the door open for concern. He signed a one-year deal for 2025 after appearing in just two games for the Chiefs last year. A sternoclavicular injury kept him off the field until December. Brown has played only one full NFL season in his six-year career. So, it's hard to imagine the Chiefs will be able to count on him for a boatload of games this year. That puts a damper on the Chiefs' plans to use him as a deep threat. Brown hyped up the plan, according to the Chiefs' YouTube page via Sports Illustrated. 'I think it's no secret that we're fast and we can fly,' Brown said. 'It's no secret. If you're not respecting it, we can run past you, and I think that just opens up everything underneath. We got a guy who runs 4.21 and me, (Tyquan) Thornton, so we're pretty fast.' Brown also hyped the overall wide receiver room, according to 'I feel like we mesh together really well, on and off the field,' said Brown. 'We're like brothers, so when we're out there playing with each other, it's a lot of fun. 'I think just taking it day by day, (and) enjoying the process. Enjoying the guys, enjoying the teammates, because it moves fast. So that's what I've been preaching – let's enjoy it every day, let's win every day, (let's) attack every day and get better at something.' Chiefs WR Skyy Moore's days in KC may be limited He's already on the verge of getting pushed out. Now Moore has a hamstring injury that adds to the problematic mix. Moore has been a disappointment in his Chiefs' career. And his 2024 season was basically lost with no catches in six games and only three targets. He has 43 catches in a three-year NFL career. And he may be the odd man out, according to Sports Illustrated, with a caveat. 'Being relatively inexpensive might be Moore's saving grace in having a job come the beginning of the season,' Minchella wrote. 'While he hasn't lived up to the expectations, the Chiefs are still giving him a chance to prove himself and crack the 53-man roster.' But it didn't help matters when Mahomes didn't mention Moore when talking about the Chiefs' receivers, according to The Up & Adams Show via 'I think it's gonna come from everywhere,' Mahomes said. 'Obviously, you've got Rashee being back. He looks great. You have Xavier Worthy, who came on so strong at the end of last year. You have Hollywood Brown healthy again. Guys everywhere. 'You add in Travis Kelce, a Hall of Famer. Noah Gray, a great tight end, and everybody that we've added to all those different rooms. We have so many weapons. Let's go out there and just maximize it all. It's not gonna be just one person. It's gonna be the entire offense going out there and showcasing what the Kansas City Chiefs truly are.' Skyy Moore facing tough challenges Moore will have to fight not only through his injury, but also his career-long lack of productivity. Another thing that could help Moore is his versatility, according to But there's also an ominous caveat. 'The coaching staff has shown that they like Skyy Moore's ability to plug in at every wide receiver position,' Charles Goldman wrote. 'He'll get opportunities during offseason workouts and training camp. But make no mistake that he's on a short leash. Another injury could sink his chances.' Yikes. That's a tough assessment, but also a true one. The Chiefs have seen enough of Moore to know he's unlikely to move the receiver room needle if he's not 100%. World Aquatics Championships 2025: Katie Ledecky beats Summer McIntosh in 800m freestyle 'race of the century'; U.S. breaks WR in mixed 4x100 relay

Katie Ledecky's historic reign continues after she beat rival Summer McIntosh in one of the biggest non-Olympic swimming races during Saturday's women's 800-meter freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The race, dubbed "the biggest race of this century, men or women, from outside of the Olympic format" by NBC swimming analyst Rowdy Gaines this week, lived up to the hype as Ledecky and McIntosh, slotted into lanes 3 and 4, battled to a dramatic finish. The only surprise: Australia's Lani Pallister made it a thrilling three-woman race instead of a duel between only Ledecky and Canada's McIntosh. McIntosh had the narrow lead with 100 meters left before Ledecky pulled away in the final 50 meters and won in 8:05.62, narrowly beating Pallister (8:05.98). McIntosh was third in 8:07.29 in what was called the greatest 800 freestyle ever. It was the first time two women had ever gone below 8:06.00 in the same 800 free with all three well below 8:08.00. Shortly after Ledecky's thrilling win, the United States team of Jack Alexy, Patrick Sammon, Kate Douglass and Torri Huske set a new world record in the mixed 4x100 relay in 3:18.48. Both Ledecky, 28, and McIntosh, 18, cruised to the finals after winning their individual qualifying heats on Friday. Ledecky has won a total of 14 Olympic medals in her career, including nine golds. McIntosh put herself on the map during last summer's Paris Olympics by taking home three golds and a silver. The 800m freestyle has been Ledecky's race, with the Maryland native winning gold in the event at each of the past four Olympics, the only woman to achieve that feat. She also now owns seven consecutive world titles in the 800m going back to the 2013 event. McIntosh had been trying to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to ever win five gold medals in a single world championships. She won her first three events in Singapore before Ledecky and Pallister left her with a bronze. McIntosh has bested Ledecky in the 800m freestyle before. In February 2024, the Canadian was six seconds faster than Ledecky at the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in Orlando, Florida. It was Ledecky's first defeat in the event since 2010. It's been a fruitful week already for both swimmers. Ledecky claimed gold in the 1,500m freestyle and a bronze in the 400m freestyle. That 400m finish was behind McIntosh, who claimed gold in the event, along with the 200 IM and 200 fly. Both Ledecky and McIntosh have been chasing records set by Phelps, who won five individual gold medals at the 2007 World Championships. In other events, Gretchen Walsh became the first American woman to ever win gold at the world championships in the 50m butterfly. Regan Smith and Claire Curzan took silver and bronze, respectively, in the women's 200m backstroke. Jack Alexy's bronze in the men's 50 freestyle was his third medal of the 2025 world championships.
