Infrastructure gaps pose hurdles for Palamu's TB elimination goals
2
Daltonganj: The Palamu district TB department is facing challenges in conducting Cy-Tb skin test and IGRA test that are done on people to diagnose TB.
Cy-Tb skin test, an advanced version of the Montoux TB test, helps detect latent TB infection.
Similarly, IGRA test serves to identify dormant TB.
Former civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Sriwastav said, "State govt TB doctors and community health officers conduct Cy-Tb skin tests, while an NGO handles IGRA tests. X-ray screening of patients is mandatory before both tests to rule out any patch of TB in a person. Person having any patch of TB is not to be put to either of these tests."
The absence of X-ray facilities at the Medinirai Medical College and Hospital, Daltonganj, has hindered testing.
X-ray services are available at Panki and Harihurganj community health centres and the Chhaterpur sub-divisional hospital.
The district also faces infrastructure challenges, including limited availability of Tru Nat machines, CB Nat machines, and microscope centres.
Respiratory health risks are high for the over 21 lakh residents of the district which has many stone crushing plants. Palamu has 4,000 active TB cases.
The department aims to test 3,000 additional individuals for latent TB using CyTb, whilst another 3,000 will undergo IGRA testing. "We are committed to eliminate TB from the district despite challenges," he added.

4,106 panchayats TB-free, CG wins nat'l award for campaign success
Raipur: Chhattisgarh is making rapid strides towards tuberculosis (TB) elimination with declaration of 4,106 gram panchayats TB-free. Chhattisgarh also received a national award for excellent implementation of the TB-Free Gram Panchayat programme. The state is implementing a comprehensive action plan to achieve PM Narendra Modi's goal of making India TB-free by 2025. The "Nikshay-Niramay Chhattisgarh – 100-day campaign" began on Dec 7, 2024. The campaign aimed to combat TB at the grassroots level. Under the initiative, authorities identified and listed high-risk individuals through door-to-door surveys across all districts. They conducted tests using modern techniques. Public participation played a significant role in the campaign's success. The Governor, CM, and Health minister adopted TB patients and provided nutritional support as 'Nikshay Mitras'. Over 15,000 new Nikshay Mitras have registered and provided nutritional assistance to more than 34,000 patients. Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai directed authorities to focus on vulnerable sections of society often deprived of healthcare services. These include prisoners, elderly residents in old age homes, students in hostels, and factory workers. Sai stated that when govt commitment and public cooperation unite, change transforms from a goal into an achievement. Chhattisgarh is becoming a living example of this.

Sion hosp to start TB containment lab to test for drug-resistant cases
Mumbai: After years of relying on external partnerships, Sion hospital is set to expand its efforts to hunt for drug-resistant tuberculosis by adding a 'TB containment' laboratory. It will allow the hospital to conduct drug sensitivity tests on 5%-10% of positive TB cases of 15,000 tested there annually. Previously, all positive samples were sent to private labs registered under National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, like PD Hinduja Hospital or, more recently, Thyrocare, for testing of drug-resistant strains. A tender for the containment lab, which will allow safe testing of samples, was floated earlier this month. Sion hospital dean Dr Mohan Joshi said once the tender process is completed, it should take a few months for the lab to become functional. The city reports about 50,000 to 60,000 new TB cases annually, of which a few thousand are drug-resistant cases. It's quicker and more convenient." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! The technique delivers results in 7-21 days, depending on bacterial load, which is faster than traditional solid culture methods that can take up to 8 weeks. However, liquid cultures come with higher bio-safety risks. "So far, we've worked with solid cultures in the hospital, which are safer...," the microbiologist said. To minimise this risk, the containment lab will have a filtration system equipped with ventilation to allow air to flow inward, not outward. Dr Turbadkar said similar containment labs exist at KEM and JJ hospitals. For any such lab, permissions are needed from the central TB division, which then provides technical staff.
