Andaman airspace to be closed for 3 hours tomorrow for high altitude weapon test
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
was closed for three hours on Friday from 7 am due to a
high altitude weapon test
conducted by the
tri-services command
, according to an official as quoted by PTI. The same will be the case for tomorrow, too.
"Airspace over and around the
Andaman
and Nicobar Islands with maximum corridor length of around 500 km will be restricted between 01:30 and 04:30 Universal Time Coordinated UTC (7 am and 10 am IST) on May 23 and 24," the NOTAM read.
"We have already issued
Notice to Airmen
(NOTAM) on May 16 and instructed that no civilian aircraft will be allowed to fly over Andaman on May 23 and May 24," a senior official from the
Andaman and Nicobar Command
told PTI.

In light of the airspace closure, the official said that a high-altitude weapon test today was completed successfully and will be holding a similar test tomorrow. "This is a routine practice here in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as we have done similar tests in the past also," they added.
The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) is recognized as the only tri-services command in India.

Buried 100 years ago, HR&CE unearths temple near Trichy
Trichy: Restoration work is underway on a temple that lay buried for nearly a century in Vidathilampatti village near Manapparai, Trichy, officials from the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR&CE) department said. The Pattatharasi Amman Temple is being excavated with an initial grant of ₹2 lakh from the Village Temple Renovation Fund. As the work progressed and the structure was found to be largely intact, the department sought an additional ₹30 lakh for further restoration. Located near the Mamundi River, the temple was buried over time after debris from canal construction was dumped around it nearly 100 years ago. A major flood in 1977 submerged the structure further, leaving only the moolavar gopuram visible above ground, said Manapparai HR&CE inspector Vinoth. Excavation began after a report was submitted and funds were cleared. A poclain excavator unearthed the main shrine, which measures 7 feet in width and 10 feet in height. Idols and tridents believed to be original to the temple were found in the sanctum. Additional funds have been requested to clear the remaining mounds of earth and to build a retaining wall. "Villagers had been demanding its revival. Elders recall visiting the temple in their youth," said Manapparai municipal chairman Geetha A Michael Raj. The proposal was submitted alongside that of the nearby Kali Thirtha Eswaran Temple. However, officials acknowledged that poor road connectivity to the site remains a challenge. "We will ensure better access to the temple," the chairman said. Villagers, meanwhile, are celebrating the rediscovery. "It's a long-standing demand. Prayagraj, Kashi only cities in India to score 100/100 in improving AQI

Spurt in evictions: Assam eyes to reclaim encroached forest land
Guwahati: Assam is carrying out large-scale eviction drives in its forest lands for several interrelated reasons, driven by ecological, legal, and social imperatives with the objective of reclaiming vast tracts of encroached land. According to the Union environment ministry's report to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the state's total forest area under encroachment was 3,620.9 square kilometers (3,62,090 ha) as of March 2024, making it the second highest among all Indian states and Union Territories, after Madhya Pradesh. The eviction drives in forest lands are primarily motivated by the need to reduce human-wildlife conflict, comply with judicial orders, restore ecological balance, reclaim land for public use, and enforce land laws. These efforts are complex and often controversial, reflecting the intersection of conservation priorities, legal mandates, and social dynamics. The biggest impact of the unabetted encroachment of forest lands for decades in the state has been on wildlife habitats, resulting into high incidence of human-animal conflict, particularly with elephant. The drives have been criticized for disproportionately targeting minority (especially Bangladesh-origin Muslim) communities, and for lack of rehabilitation and short notice periods.
