IAS officer conducts wedding of orphan woman

Trichy: IAS officer Dinesh Ponraj Oliver bore the expense of the wedding of an underprivileged woman at Peravurani in Thanjavur district on Sunday. The bride, K Pandimeena, is a nursing graduate from Rettavayal village in the Sethubhavachatram block in Thanjavur district. The bond between the official and the 22-year-old bride began three years ago when Pandimeena's father Kannaiya, and mother Selvi died one after another. Pandimeena was left with her younger sister, a disabled child, in a dilapidated house. Dinesh Ponraj Oliver, currently the inspector general with the registration department, was the Thanjavur collector from June 2021 to May 2023. Pandimeena met him in 2022 and explained her situation. She requested him to help her build a new house. Moved by Pandimeena's situation, Oliver arranged for the construction of a new house for Pandimeena and her sister with an aid of around 2.4 lakh under the Prime Minister Housing scheme and 1.6 lakh under his relief fund. With an additional support of 1.5 lakh from the Lions Club, the construction of the house was completed. In Nov 2022, Oliver personally inaugurated the house. He continued supporting the sisters with various assistance even after he was transferred from the Thanjavur district. On Sunday, Oliver conducted the wedding and bore the expenses. Social activists and members of the Lions Club also took part in the wedding.

Govt and Mala villagers undertake eco-drive project under MGNREGA

Udupi: An environmentalist is serving as a vital link between the govt and the public, facilitating a conservation initiative under the MGNREGA programme that merges ecological restoration with rural employment in Mala village. In collaboration with the social forestry department, residents of Mala village are undertaking an ecological restoration project under the MGNREGA scheme. The effort began in Sept last year when environmentalist Arathi Ashok submitted a proposal for a green project on the cut road in the village. With 5–10 locals ready to participate, the project was greenlit, and by April, the work order was issued after an inspection by the Range Forest Officer (RFO). Arathi told TOI that the project involves planting 150 saplings (local species supporting the biodiversity of the Western Ghats) on a 1.5km stretch of the two-kilometre Gundipalke-Mala road. A total of Rs 2 lakh was sanctioned, covering material costs and wages. The road is lined with saplings protected using bamboo fences and 150 acacia sticks, safeguarding them from grazing animals. Locals Govinda Gowda and Santhosh took the lead in managing and distributing bamboo fencing materials to each planting spot, with 30 saplings assigned per location. An MGNREGA project board has also been installed on-site. She said that so far, 70 saplings were planted manually, with work timed perfectly in June when the soil is soft and rainfall is manageable. The initiative helps in environmental restoration, but also offers a valuable income opportunity, especially for rural women, with a simple process of taking before and after photos of their work to ensure transparency and credit. "Though such projects are popular in Kerala, they remain under-utilised in Karnataka. However, the Mala initiative is proving that change is possible when local people take the lead. Looking ahead, plans are in place to dig percolation pits in the next phase, particularly in areas where afforestation was taken up by the social forestry department. Coming Sept, attention will turn to weeding and fertilising the planted saplings," Arathi said. The success of this project lies not just in the green cover but in its potential to attract more funds, empower rural communities, and combat poverty through sustainable livelihood. "For initiatives like this to truly scale as a national model, panchayat members must play an active role in informing citizens about such govt-supported schemes, something that, unfortunately, rarely happens in practice. While there is institutional support and intent to expand green cover, these programmes often remain underutilised simply because people are not made aware of them. Concerned authorities must treat such awareness as a mandatory responsibility," she said.

Passenger associations demand coach watering facility, stabling lines on KRCL network in Udupi, Uttara Kannada districts

Railway patrons and passenger associations of Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have planned to flag certain major concerns of the region, including lack of coach watering facility, stabling lines and upgradation of Udupi Railway Station under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) with Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna when he visits Udupi district on Friday, June 13. The Railways was unable to start or terminate any train either at Karwar or Udupi as the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., (KRCL) has not provided coach watering facility in any of the stations in coastal Karnataka, regretted Kundapura Railway Prayanikara Samithi president Ganesh Puthran. While KRCL claims watering facility was available within about 350 km distance--at Mangaluru Junction and Madgaon--the possibility of operating trains towards Bengaluru via Padil Bypass without touching Mangaluru Junction gets affected. Therefore, KRCL should introduce coach watering facility either at Udupi or Kundapura Railway Station, Mr. Puthran demanded. He further said KRCL has not provided stabling lines at any of the stations on the entire Karnataka coast thereby making it difficult to stable trains for a few hours. Consequently, trains, either special or regular, have to resume return journey immediately thereby inconveniencing people, he noted. Stations development Besides urging the Railway Ministry to immediately sanction KRCL proposal to develop Udupi Railway Station under ABSS, Kundapura Railway Station too should be developed under the shceme, Mr. Puthran demanded. Also, important stations in coastal Karnataka lack adequate platform shelters as well as shelters for foot overbridges. KRCL should address this serious shortcoming on priority basis, he demanded. Uttara Kannada Railway Samithi Secretary Rajiv Gaonkar demanded low level second platforms at important stations, including Kumta and Gokarna Road, should be upgraded immediately for the benefit of passengers. Besides, there was no second platform at Barkur Railway Station near Brahmavara that causes severe misery to passengers if a train halts on the second line, he said. Mr. Gaonkar said the Ministry should forthwith implement its own decision, to extend Train No. 16585/586 SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru to Vasco da Gama so as to resume the lost connectivity between Karwar and Mysuru regions. He also demanded development of Karwar Station under Amrit Bharat Scheme.
