Rally organisers regret police intervention at Dataran Merdeka

Focus Malaysia26-07-2025
CONFUSION arose at Dataran Merdeka when members of the police force intervened after rally organisers set up their stage at the Dataran.
Police said the organisers had no permission to set up a stage at Dataran Merdeka, with acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad saying the organisers did not apply for any permit to set up a temporary stage at Dataran.
The stage has since been removed by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur.
He said there were safety concerns over the stage's structure, adding that there was no indication as to how many people would be on the stage at any one time.
'The earlier agreement between the police and the organisers was that two Toyota Hiluxes would be used as a 'stage,'' he said in a brief statement to the media.
Nevertheless, according to reports, Takiyuddin expressed disappointment with the authorities for asking organisers to reopen the stage at Dataran Merdeka.
'The police should be facilitating the organisers, not making things more difficult,' he said.
Meanwhile, former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader Tian Chua was announced at the Turun Anwar rally as a participant, while former Bersih leader Mandeep Singh has extended his support to participants of today's rally.
Mandeep encouraged participants to celebrate democracy peacefully and responsibly.
In a Facebook post, he urged attendees to state their demands with facts, avoid emotional arguments, keep the area clean, support local traders near Dataran Merdeka, and prioritise safety.
'The right to assemble is the right of every citizen,' he emphasised.
Mandeep also shared practical tips for rally-goers based on past Bersih experiences and posted a photo from the 2015 Bersih 4 rally, recalling the massive turnout against the former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak administration.
The rally attendees are also informed that former PKR politician Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, will also be appearing at the checkpoint before marching to Dataran Merdeka at 2pm.
Meanwhile, over a thousand rally participants gathered outside the Sogo shopping mall, where PAS leader Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan addressed members of PAS' Unit Amal.
The crowd chanted 'Pudin' in reference to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail while waving at passing police vehicles.
However, traffic along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman came to a halt after large crowds from the opposition rally occupied the traffic junction in front of the Sogo shopping complex around 12.30pm.
Although the road had not been initially closed, police later blocked it using their motorcycles due to the overwhelming presence of demonstrators.
Vehicles from Chow Kit had to be redirected via Jalan Dang Wangi and the route between Sogo and Kompleks Pertama. Traffic police, supported by the Royal Malaysia Police Mounted Unit, were on-site to manage the situation.
Protesters also gathered at other locations, including Pasar Seni, Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek, and Kampung Baru, before heading to the main venue at Dataran Merdeka. Crowds filled areas around Kompleks Pertama, Kompleks Campbell, and the old Odeon cinema.
At Pasar Seni, Bersatu Armada exco Na'im Brundage delivered a speech under police monitoring, with the situation reported to be calm and under control. — July 26, 2025

PH seeks to avoid three-cornered fights in state polls

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who chairs PH, said the coalition is prioritising arrangements that prevent internal clashes and promote unity. He noted that PH is working towards a consensus to ensure candidates do not overlap, as such scenarios risk fragmenting voter support. 'But if it has to happen, our position is that we will refrain from contesting to avoid causing divisions,' said Anwar, who also leads Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). He shared this after a closed-door meeting with Sabah PKR leaders here on Sunday when asked about PH's approach if GRS and BN candidates contest the same seats. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Three PKR leaders issue warnings to PKR-PH while Iswardy Morni expects 10 safe seats for Anwar's party

WHAT began as a promising week for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has quickly unraveled, with three PKR leaders sounding the alarm over looming political turmoil and issuing stark warnings to the party and its leadership. It began with Former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad cautioning government leaders against making dismissive remarks about the recent 'Turun Anwar' rally, warning that such comments could backfire by generating sympathy for the opposition. He was responding to Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming's claim that 20 tonnes of rubbish were left after the protest. Nik Nazmi said focusing on minor issues like rubbish could appear to trivialise public grievances and potentially carry unintended racial undertones, shifting public perception in favour of the rally organisers and distracting from the government's openness and the opposition's weak arguments. 'When you make an issue out of something small like the amount of rubbish left behind, it can be interpreted as trivialising the genuine grievances felt by the rakyat. 'Plus, it could also be interpreted as giving a racial twist to the matter indirectly,' he said on X. The government of Anwar Ibrahim was again warned on Friday by former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli that poorly managed negotiations between Petronas and Sarawak's state oil firm Petros could cost the national oil company RM15–20 bil annually, potentially destabilising Malaysia's economy. Speaking on his podcast Yang Berhenti Menteri, Rafizi stressed that Petronas contributes RM30–35 bil yearly to the federal government. 'It is not a paltry sum,' he said. Any sharp revenue decline could impact public services and trigger a credit rating downgrade, increasing national debt servicing costs from RM48 billion to as high as RM60 billion. 'If this sum drops, it would have an impact on the nation's ability to fund basic services,' he said. 'So, if Petronas loses RM20 bil, the company will be unable to pay the RM35 bil in dividends to the federal government,' he added. The last stroke came today with Iswardy Morni issuing a warning on the electoral prospects of Anwar's party, PKR. In a Facebook post, Iswardy casually wrote the following: 'There are only 10 safe seats for PKR in the upcoming general election. Tambun, Tasek Gelugor, and Permatang Pauh will be difficult to win.' Although PKR did not win the Tasek Gelugor seat, which went to Datuk Wan Saifulruddin Wan Jan of PN, it is significant that a prominent party figure like Iswardy predicts only 10 safe seats for PKR in the next general election, even suggesting that Anwar's own seat may be at risk. Such remarks are bold and could later be seen by discontented party members as a direct challenge to the Prime Minister. With the recent viral comments from three PKR leaders, questions are now being raised about whether the party will take disciplinary action. Previously, party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh declined to push for the suspension of nine MPs, including Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi, following the judicial appointments controversy. Could the leadership revisit that approach now, as these three leaders continue to openly criticise the party's direction? —Aug 3, 2025 Main image: Utusan Borneo

MAG's Boeing Jet Purchase Not Linked To Tariff Talks, Minister Clarifies

The recent aircraft purchase by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) from Boeing was a long-planned business decision, not a concession linked to tariff negotiations with the US, the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz clarified. He explained that the purchase was made using MAG's own funds and is not in any way related to the tariff discussions with the US government. 'This is a commercial decision made in line with MAG's fleet renewal strategy, not one driven by diplomatic pressure or public spending,' he said in a Facebook posting on Aug 2. The minister also noted that the Boeing deal had been announced as early as March 2025, well before the US imposed any new tariff on Malaysian exports. 'At the time of the announcement, there was no indication from the US about imposing new tariffs. To suggest the aircraft order was a reaction to tariffs is simply not accurate,' he said. However, Tengku Zafrul acknowledged that Malaysia had strategically highlighted large-scale purchases from American companies, including MAG's aircraft deal, during negotiations to demonstrate the country's role as a significant trade partner to the US. 'By showing that Malaysia also imports high-value products from the US, we helped shift the narrative away from a one-sided trade surplus. 'This helped convince US authorities to revise the tariff rate downward from 25% to 19%,' he explained. He described the move as a 'smart and calculated' approach that protected both corporate interests and national economic priorities. 'The MAG-Boeing deal was never about appeasement. It was about demonstrating that Malaysia is a responsible and reciprocal trading partner while staying true to the commercial viability of every decision,' Tengku Zafrul said.
