Rally organisers regret police intervention at Dataran Merdeka
CONFUSION arose at Dataran Merdeka when members of the police force intervened after rally organisers set up their stage at the Dataran. Police said the organisers had no permission to set up a stage at Dataran Merdeka, with acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad saying the organisers did not apply for any permit to set up a temporary stage at Dataran. The stage has since been removed by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. He said there were safety concerns over the stage's structure, adding that there was no indication as to how many people would be on the stage at any one time. 'The earlier agreement between the police and the organisers was that two Toyota Hiluxes would be used as a 'stage,'' he said in a brief statement to the media. Nevertheless, according to reports, Takiyuddin expressed disappointment with the authorities for asking organisers to reopen the stage at Dataran Merdeka. 'The police should be facilitating the organisers, not making things more difficult,' he said. Meanwhile, former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader Tian Chua was announced at the Turun Anwar rally as a participant, while former Bersih leader Mandeep Singh has extended his support to participants of today's rally. Mandeep encouraged participants to celebrate democracy peacefully and responsibly. In a Facebook post, he urged attendees to state their demands with facts, avoid emotional arguments, keep the area clean, support local traders near Dataran Merdeka, and prioritise safety. 'The right to assemble is the right of every citizen,' he emphasised. Mandeep also shared practical tips for rally-goers based on past Bersih experiences and posted a photo from the 2015 Bersih 4 rally, recalling the massive turnout against the former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak administration. The rally attendees are also informed that former PKR politician Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, will also be appearing at the checkpoint before marching to Dataran Merdeka at 2pm. Meanwhile, over a thousand rally participants gathered outside the Sogo shopping mall, where PAS leader Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan addressed members of PAS' Unit Amal. The crowd chanted 'Pudin' in reference to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail while waving at passing police vehicles. However, traffic along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman came to a halt after large crowds from the opposition rally occupied the traffic junction in front of the Sogo shopping complex around 12.30pm. Although the road had not been initially closed, police later blocked it using their motorcycles due to the overwhelming presence of demonstrators. Vehicles from Chow Kit had to be redirected via Jalan Dang Wangi and the route between Sogo and Kompleks Pertama. Traffic police, supported by the Royal Malaysia Police Mounted Unit, were on-site to manage the situation. Protesters also gathered at other locations, including Pasar Seni, Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek, and Kampung Baru, before heading to the main venue at Dataran Merdeka. Crowds filled areas around Kompleks Pertama, Kompleks Campbell, and the old Odeon cinema. At Pasar Seni, Bersatu Armada exco Na'im Brundage delivered a speech under police monitoring, with the situation reported to be calm and under control. — July 26, 2025 Main photo credit: Malay Mail

Tian Chua gives ‘Turun Anwar' rally a miss
Tian Chua said he will not attend today's rally but respects the people's right to assemble. PETALING JAYA : Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua will not be attending the anti-Anwar Ibrahim rally at Dataran Merdeka, despite his name being included in the programme. According to the programme shared by an opposition leader, the former Batu MP was scheduled to arrive at 3.15pm. Tian Chua told FMT the organisers invited him to attend the rally on Thursday or Friday. 'But I told them I couldn't attend because I won't be in town. Maybe, by that time, they may have already printed the programme,' he said. He also said he told the organisers he respected their right to assemble. Tian Chua, a staunch supporter of Anwar Ibrahim after Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998, was sacked from the party in 2023. The decision came after he contested the Batu parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 15th general election. According to the programme for the rally, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin will be present at the event, aimed at calling for Anwar's resignation as the prime minister.

'Terima kasih polis': Rallygoers show appreciation for cops [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: Chants of "Terima kasih polis" rang out across the Central Market area this afternoon as participants gathered for the Pas-led rally. The large crowd included Bersatu Youth exco Na'im Brundage. Other politicians expected to arrive in Sogo before making their way to Dataran Merdeka include former PKR vice-president Tian Chua and political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegu Bard. Some participants were also spotted holding banners which read "Mahasiswa Tertekan" (students under pressure), while others chanted, "Turun Pakatan Harapan" and "Turun Anwar". Police anticipate a turnout of between 10,000 and 15,000 people at today's rally. Participants are set to gather at Masjid Negara, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru, and Kompleks Sogo — before converging at Dataran Merdeka. The rally aims to pressure the government over issues such as the rising cost of living and alleged institutional failures. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police would facilitate the assembly. A total of 16 roads will be closed for the rally, which is expected to end after 5.15pm. Police have advised the public to plan their journeys in advance and use public transport where possible to avoid congestion in the city centre.

Women's rights pioneer and Ops Lalang detainee Theresa Lim dies at 68, mourned by activists
KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Renowned women's rights activist Theresa Lim Chin Chin has reportedly died at the age of 68 early yesterday. Malaysiakini cited her son Daniel Jeyachristi Anthony confirming the death at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre over cancer complications. 'She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma earlier this week. She was too weak to start chemotherapy and deteriorated further,' he was quoted saying. Lim was formerly detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) during Ops Lalang on October 27, 1987, and released on June 3, 1988. She had then been involved in All Women's Action Society (Awam) and the Women's Development Collective (WDC). Her photograph had appeared on The Star's front page on October 28, 1987 recording the ISA detention, labelled 'Miss Lim Chin Chin – Aliran women's leader'. She later documented her 60-day solitary confinement experience in a published account. After her release, she had continued her activism to the end of her life. Former Batu MP Chua Tian Chang today mourned her death, saying her sacrifices had paved the way for today's movements. 'Her unwavering spirit will continue to inspire us forward. Rest well Lim, your legacy lives on in our hearts as well as in the fight for justice,' the activist known as Tian Chua posted on Instagram. Activist Kua Kia Soong also paid tribute to Lim. They had both been detained under Ops Lalang. 'She suffered torture during her detention, especially during the first 60 days of solitary confinement. The trauma left her with an auto-immune disability that left her unwell for many years,' he posted on Facebook.

PKR may be facing a succession crisis, says Tian Chua
Former Batu MP Tian Chua criticised any top-down endorsements in PKR as 'unhealthy', saying the party should value independent delegate votes, representing the grassroots. PETALING JAYA : A former PKR leader believes the party is facing a succession crisis with PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar deciding to challenge incumbent Rafizi Ramli for the post of deputy president in the upcoming party polls. Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua said a true succession plan would involve broader leadership collaboration, which he claims PKR lacks due to previous defections and generational gaps. 'If there is a succession plan, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim would need Nurul Izzah, Rafizi, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Amirudin Shaari and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad to build a big team, as we have seen in the past. 'To me, these probably are the important figures that can ensure a more successful transition. In such a scenario, the team would be more solid and can potentially lead the party in a post-Anwar situation,' he told FMT. Last month, party bigwigs, including vice-presidents Nik Nazmi and K Saraswathy, PKR Youth chief Adam Adli, his predecessor Akmal Nasir, as well as several MPs and assemblymen, lost in their respective division elections. The leaders have since agreed to 'move on' and not dispute the election results following an audit, which revealed that there was no interference from external or third parties in the blockchain technology used in the voting. Tian Chua, the former Batu MP, criticised any top-down endorsements in PKR as 'unhealthy', saying the party should value independent delegate votes, representing the grassroots. He also suggested that Nurul Izzah's challenge for the deputy presidency could affect her father regardless of the outcome. According to Tian Chua, if Nurul Izzah loses the party elections, it would seem that she does not have the support in the party, which will reflect on Anwar as well. However, he said, if she does win the election, other parties will say Anwar protected her and gave her 'a bed of roses' to take over the party. He said it would make Nurul Izzah's task of trying to build a strong post-Anwar PKR even harder and if the situation within the party is not handled properly, Rafizi and his camp could walk out, further weakening PKR. Asked if a 'hidden figure' had fielded Nurul Izzah against Rafizi for the post due to the latter's 'tantrum' following the first round of election results, Tian Chua said: 'As an observer, this is a theory. But as an insider, my guess is that it could be very true.' Last week, it was reported that Rafizi, who is also the economy minister, had taken leave from his official duties amid speculation over his political standing after the defeat of several apparent allies in the recent PKR divisional polls. Since then, numerous state and divisional leaders had expressed their support for Nurul Izzah's bid for the number two position, which was won by Rafizi in 2022 in a contest against then PKR secretary-general Saifuddin. Meanwhile, Saifuddin said he will not contest any position in the party elections this month, citing a desire to focus on the party's broader political struggle. His aide, Omar Mokhtar Manap, said Saifuddin, reached the decision not to contest any posts after discussions with several parties, including PKR's top leadership.
