Ireland 100% believe they can beat France

BBC News21-03-2025
Forward Fiona Tuite says Ireland can "100%" defeat France in their Women's Six Nations opener in Belfast on Saturday.France have finished second to all-conquering England in the last five Six Nations and missed out on last year's title after a final game defeat by the Red Roses.Ireland, who finished third last year, last defeated the French in 2017 championship."We 100% believe we can win this game," said Ulster second row Tuite."We'll focus on ourselves and we'll take a lot from it, it's not all about the result."We're really focused on this being a journey and on ourselves. If the result comes, then absolutely, it's class. But do we think we can punch? Absolutely."The 28-year-old has been named amongst the replacements alongside Cliodhna Moloney and squad captain Eden McMahon with head coach Scott Bemand opting for a 6:2 split on his bench.Under Bemand, Ireland have qualified for this summer's World Cup and recorded famous victories over Australia and New Zealand last autumn.Tuite said the step up in "physicality and aggression" were the main differences in playing the best teams in the world, and that is where Ireland would look to take a further step. "We're not the biggest team but we're definitely aggressive. I think Hugh [Hogan, defence coach] calls us a middleweight team, where we have to punch hard and low. "That's something we have been focusing on, that Irish physical dominance is something we wanted to bring into the game. ."We're really looking forward to bringing that against the French."Tuite added France are a "tough team" and said Ireland had been building in training, becoming more "intense and competitive" as the weeks have progressed."They are fast, strong and quick. We've worked really hard but we will just focus on the game that we can bring, and we're looking forward to the challenge."We're looking forward to see how we go in the Six Nations and then on to the World Cup."

Dame Chloe Kelly? Keir Starmer hints England's Euro-winning Lionesses could be in line to receive official honours

Sir Keir Starmer has hinted that England's Lionesses could be in line to receive official honours after their Euros win. The Prime Minister said 'recognition is coming' for the two-time champions who he says have inspired a generation. He added that they personified England's greatest values - decency, fairness and respect following the team's success in Switzerland last week. The Lionesses have won the competition twice in a row and this year beat Spain in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out. And now players Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton could be on the the New Year's Eve Honours List. The Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman could also be in the running for recognition and may be made an Honorary Dame after leading the squad to glory once more. Sir Keir told the Sun on Sunday: 'What Sarina and our Lionesses have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. 'So recognition is coming - and it will be worthy of their historic success.' The Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman could also be in the running for recognition and may be made an Honorary Dame after leading the squad to glory once more The Prime Minister flew out to Basel to watch the Lionesses achieve victory at St Jacob-Park. During the tense final, Kelly scored the winning penalty for England with goalkeeper Hampton saving not one but two Spanish shots. The Cabinet Office oversees the honours but those on the list are a closely-guarded secret and will be officially announced later down the line. However there is a precedent with the team being honoured over their last Euros win three years ago. Captain Leah Williamson received an OBE, while Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White were made MBEs. Gareth Southgate was given a knighthood for his part in the men securing a spot in their second consecutive Euros final last year. The exciting news comes after England midfielder Ella Toone revealed the heartbreaking family tragedy she kept hidden during the Lionesses' dramatic Euro 2025 final victory. Posting on Instagram four days later, the Manchester United star shared that her grandmother, known affectionately as Nanna Maz, had died just hours before one of the biggest games of her career. Alongside nine photos of her nan, Toone wrote: 'Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows. My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person. 'I'll miss you forever nan but I'll cherish the special memories we made, there isn't enough words I can possibly say to sum up the person you were, but I'm grateful you were my nanna. My football loving , crazy, funny Nan.'

Graham Potter insists Lucas Paqueta is ‘happy and committed' to West Ham

Graham Potter has insisted Lucas Paqueta is 'happy and committed' to West Ham after the Brazil midfielder was cleared of alleged breaches of the Football Association's betting regulations. Paqueta was facing a potential life ban before having his name cleared this week of the spot-fixing sting that had hung over him for two years. The situation ended Paqueta's hopes of a big money move to Manchester City. But despite rumours the Brazilian could leave West Ham before the close of the transfer window, Potter is firmly hoping he stays. 'These things you never know for sure, obviously, because anything can happen in the window with anybody,' the West Ham manager said. 'But at the same time, the news that we've had is just incredibly positive, because if it had gone the other way, there's a whole other line of questions. 'Lucas is happy, Lucas is committed, Lucas is an important person in the dressing room, an important person in the club. 'We love him and we just wanted to help him enjoy his football.' Paqueta's lawyer Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level, said the case had taken a heavy toll on Paqueta and effectively cost him a Premier League title winner's medal. He was on the brink of a £85m move to City when the charges were announced in August 2023. Campbell said: 'Lucas' life has basically been on hold for the last two years. He woke up every morning with the fear that this could be the day when his career was going to be over. Of course, Lucas is delighted with the outcome of the commission - but what shouldn't be forgotten is that there is an alternative universe where he moves to Manchester City and now has a Premier League winner's medal. 'The strain he has been under since the charges were announced in August 2023 has been incredible. That's something that shouldn't be forgotten in all of this. This case has come at a considerable cost to Lucas, both as a person and as a professional footballer.' Potter said there was little doubt about how difficult the process has been for Paqueta. 'You can imagine how hard it was on a personal level for him, having to fight those allegations, which he's done,' he said. 'The club have supported him through that. 'But again, you forget these guys are Premier League footballers competing at the highest level and to have that as well in the background was an incredible challenge for him. 'It's been a really tough period of his life and his career, so it's a credit to him and his family and everybody connected with him and the support he's had, that he's come through. 'Obviously, if that's a benefit to him, then it's going to be a benefit to us, the team and the club.' Potter, who has signed former Newcastle striker Callum Wilson on a free transfer, confirmed Michail Antonio will not be part of his first team squad after recovering from his car crash. The Jamaica striker, 35, faced a potential career-ending leg operation after a car crash in December but played for his adopted nation in this summer's Gold Cup. He is now out of contract.
