Soccer-Caruso steers Italy to 1-0 win over Belgium in Women's Euro 2025
SION, Switzerland (Reuters) -Italy won their first match in the Women's European Championship since 2017 as Arianna Caruso struck just before the break to give them a 1-0 win over Belgium in their Group B opener on Thursday.
Lucia Di Guglielmo's quick pass from the right found Caruso unguarded just outside the box and the Bayern Munich midfielder calmly curled a right-footed shot away from keeper Lisa Lichtfus to find the net by the near post.
Caruso probed the Belgian defence with multiple attempts in the first 20 minutes, after the match began with a minute's silence following the death of Portuguese national men's team striker Diogo Jota in a car accident.
Belgium had more of the ball in the first half and made 10 attempts, two more than Italy, but failed to take the lead when Mariam Toloba shot wide in the 26th minute and Tessa Wullaert missed the target from close range four minutes before Caruso's goal.
Lichtfus's quick reflexes saved Cristiana Girelli's close range back-flick in the 64th minute to keep Belgium in the game, but the 2022 quarter-finalists were unable to find an equaliser as Italy made their first winning start in the tournament since 2009.
Italy will continue their campaign against Portugal on Monday, while Belgium play Nations League winners Spain.

Bidding to become the first American men's Grand Slam winner since Andy Roddick in 2003, Fritz has shown that if stamina alone determined the Wimbledon champion, he would be hard to beat. His Wimbledon campaign began on the back of winning his fourth Eastbourne title on Saturday. Then his first match at the All England Club on Monday was carried over into Tuesday, and his second-round tie on Wednesday was heading the same way before he finished off Gabriel Diallo to earn a well-deserved rest day. He took the tiebreak when Fritz netted another backhand under pressure, roaring and fist-pumping to polite applause from a crowd who were perhaps inclined to see this match wrapped up quickly with Carlos Alcaraz and home favourite Emma Raducanu still to come on the Centre Court schedule. If that was their wish it was granted as the comeback that had flickered into life was snuffed out almost immediately with Fritz racing through the fourth set and finishing it off when the Spaniard whipped a forehand long. Milan sign Italy midfielder Ricci from Torino
Samuele Ricci joined Torino in 2022 and went on to make 113 appearances for the club. (EPA Images pic) MILAN : AC Milan said they have signed Italy midfielder Samuele Ricci from Torino on a contract until June 2029 with a club option for an additional year. Financial details were not disclosed but Italian media reported that the transfer fee for the 23-year-old was around €23 million. A product of the Empoli academy, Ricci made the switch to Torino in 2022 and went on to make 113 appearances for the club. He has won 10 caps for Italy since his debut in 2022. Ricci's arrival will boost Milan's midfield options following Tijjani Reijnders' move to Manchester City.
