Oisin Murphy can continue riding while under charges for drink-driving
Oisin Murphy will be able to continue riding until at least his court appearance on drink-driving charges next week.
The four-time champion jockey was in action at Doncaster on Friday and has six booked rides at York on Saturday, a meeting covered on ITV Racing and the most high-profile since he was charged while at Royal Ascot last week.
Murphy, 29, has been charged with one count of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed level of alcohol and one count of failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside after a collision in the early hours of Sunday 27 April this year.
He is due to appear at Reading magistrates court next Thursday and it is understood the racing authorities, while monitoring developments, feel that nothing prevents the jockey riding at present and that the judicial process should be allowed to play out in the appropriate way.
The big betting race on Saturday is the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle, the 10th running of the 'Pitmen's Derby' since the switch from turf to an artificial Tapeta surface in 2016, and while the move was controversial at the time, the race has maintained its status as one of the most popular and storied events in the Flat calendar.
Trueshan's win for Hollie Doyle and Alan King under 10st 8lb in 2022 was one of the great weight-carrying performances of modern times, while Onesmoothoperator's success last year for Brian Ellison – who was born in Newcastle on 28 June 1952, the same day that Souepi landed a gamble in the Plate – fulfilled the trainer's lifetime ambition.
Onesmoothoperator is back for another crack and has been kept fresh for Saturday's race after trips to Australia and Dubai over the winter, but top weight of 9st 12lb is a significant burden to overcome.
East India Dock, the Chester Cup winner, is also prominent in the betting though unproven on the surface, while Willie Mullins's sole runner, Pappano, is making his Flat debut for the yard and has scope for progress off his current mark.
There is little juice left in their current prices, however, and at the other end of the weights, Adrian McGuinness's Tribal Star (3.15) is of greater interest at around 10-1.
He posted a useful effort to finish second to a highly progressive opponent in the Marathon event on All-Weather Finals day over Saturday's course and distance, has a draw in stall six that will suit his prominent running style and Jamie Powell's 3lb claim is also a bonus.
Newcastle 1.40 Ed Walker's Arctic Thunder improved markedly from his stable debut when second under a considerate ride at Haydock last time and 12-1 in the early betting looks too big.
York 1.55 The impeccably-bred Archivist was an easy winner at Leicester earlier this month and an opening mark of 90 could prove to be generous.
Newcastle 2.10 Fast-improving Ferrous won in a strong time over track and trip in May and could make the most of the 7lb he received from Group One-winning Kind Of Blue.
York 2.25 A drop in class for Lake Forest after his close fifth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot and while that was just 10 days ago, William Haggas's colt should take advantage.
Newcastle 2.40 Contacto is making his all-weather debut but looked sure to come on for the run when finishing a close fourth at Goodwood in May.
York 3.00 The rock-solid form here is Habooba's track-and-trip win in May and she can follow up off a 6lb higher mark.
Windsor 1.35 Prima Diva 2.15 Amorim 2.50 Tenability 3.25 Wisper 4.00 Safari Dream 4.35 Silver Chamber 5.10 Lequinto
Newcastle 1.40 Arctic Thunder 2.10 Ferrous 2.40 Contacto 3.15 Tribal Star (nap) 3.45 Rare Change (nb) 4.25 Ninth Crusade 5.00 Stand Strong 5.30 Tee Aitch Aye
Chester 2.00 Angel Of Anfield 2.30 Circios 3.05 Dream Composer 3.35 Khangai 4.10 Cosi Bello 4.45 Marbuzet 5.20 Bowerchalke
Doncaster 5.50 Brazen Bolt 6.25 Shavkat 7.00 Arbitration 7.30 Kawthar 8.00 Mereside Diva 8.30 Mystical Maria 9.00 Obito
York 1.55 Archivist 2.25 Lake Forest 3.00 Habooba 3.40 Crest Of Fire 4.15 Gravitas 4.50 Station X 5.25 Whathappensinvegas
Lingfield 5.35 One Million Dreams 6.10 Voix De Bocelli 6.45 Hot Dancer 7.15 India Love 7.45 Toolatetonegotiate 8.15 Claim That Smile 8.45 Sabrimento
Curragh 3.30 The older horses have had the upper hand in this race in recent seasons and Kalpana, a close third in the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup last time, could extend the sequence at the expense of Whirl, the Oaks runner-up.
Newcastle 3.45 A 6lb penalty is unlikely to trouble Rare Change as he bids to follow up an emphatic success at Pontefract on Sunday.

Woman breaks down in tears after 'nightmare' home makeover leaves hallway 'looking like a black hole' - and swipes 'was the designer off his head?!'
A woman broke down in tears after a 'nightmare' home makeover left her hallway 'looking like a black hole'. The show, titled Your Home In Their Hands, aired on screens for just one series between 2014 and 2015 on BBC One. It saw homeowners give amateur interior designers free reign to revamp their property and was presented by Celia Sawyer. One episode saw a couple, Steve and June, left baffled by their makeover after the designers added a plant wall to their entrance and fish tanks in the walls of their staircase. 'That's different isn't in,' Steve apprehensively commented while his partner added: 'I wasn't expecting this.' 'I'm very shocked, it's not my hug I wanted. I don't really like the colour and I'm not sure about the carpet,' she said, looking down at the green flooring that resembled grass. She then went on to admit: '... at this moment in time, I'm regretting it'. June batted plants out of the way as the pair looked at the fish tanks in the walls. She commented: 'I'm assuming it's Rowan who's done this, I think he's off his head!' The couple then made their way upstairs to the bedroom which was painted in a garish blue and pale pink. 'Where's all the clothes going to go?' June asked as she looked at a small blue wardrobe in the corner of the room. Despite the contrasting colour scheme and storage concerns, she admitted: 'I quite like it though.' Steve looked doubtful and replied: 'Well, good.' Celia asked: 'So June, do you think this is what you were looking for? You wanted something more feminine?' One episode saw a couple, Steve and June (left), left baffled by their makeover after the designers added plant wall to their entrance and fish tanks in the walls of their staircase 'I don't dislike it,' June said. 'But I'm just worried about where we're going to put everything.' However, overall it wasn't what she was hoping for and she explained, 'The light I really wanted isn't there, so for that I'm disappointed.' 'Walking into the hallway was a nightmare for me because I was so worried it was so radical and it was very obvious walking in that June hated it,' Celia commented. 'There's no light in there, it's going to be like a black hole of clutter,' Jane said. 'I know how much time and effort Steve has put into the house and now I feel like I've taken it away from him,' she added tearfully. 'I feel I've let him down.' She cried as Steve hugged her and said: 'No you haven't.' Another episode saw a grimacing man rage 'it's an absolute mess!' after a BBC home makeover from hell that 'couldn't be any worse'. Couple John and Rachel Geoghegan appeared on Your Home In Their Hands 10 years ago. The pair had opposing preferences, with Rachel wanting more colour, while John was a fan of more plain interiors. At the end of the episode interior designer Celia Sawyer took them around their new home - and they were very pleased with the living room. However things took a nasty turn when they were shown their new bedroom.

Premier League stars set to be interviewed after they're substituted next season as part of in-game TV revolution
PREMIER LEAGUE stars face being interviewed soon after they are subbed next season. Dressing-room cameras will also be allowed but NOT during team talks. 1 A number of broadcasting changes were agreed by clubs at the Prem's June annual meeting. But extra access will only be in place for TWO home games per club. Sky Sports will show 215 Prem games, part of a new four-year contract worth £6.7billion. There will be dressing-room access, a half-time player interview or a chat with a substituted player from next season. Last season saw half-time player interviews trialled and some fans were not receptive to the introduction. There will also be limitations in place to prevent all the changes from occurring at the same time. But it is expected there will be dressing-room access and player interviews at two home games for all 20 Prem clubs. Another change sees cameramen will be allowed to enter the field of play to capture player celebrations. Sky Sports' expansion will see every Sunday 2pm match broadcast for the first time ever. And six of the opening round of Prem matches will be shown on TV after Nottingham Forest vs Brentford was moved.
