Time for long-range thinking on the sports betting front
Surprisingly, the Boks are not considered favourites for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Members of the Springbok team in a huddle during the 2023 Rugby World Cup final in Paris. Picture: Steve Haag/Gallo Images The sports bonanza of July 2025 is drawing to a close but that doesn't mean wagering opportunities are over – far from it. Many a life-changing coup has been landed at a humble August Vaal race meeting – or a canny long-range flutter on the footie has come to bountiful fruition. Remember Leicester City! Hopefully we've prospered from a brilliant horse racing season in KwaZulu-Natal, the Open Championship, the Tour de France, Grands Prix and MotoGPs, the Women's African Cup of Nations, the Women's Euros and even the World Darts Matchplay and have a tidy fund with which to tackle the rest of the year – and the next one. Speaking of long-range, it might be a tad surprising for Springbok fans to learn that their heroes are not favourites to win the 2027 Rugby World Cup. South Africa are 3.65 to complete a hat-trick of titles, with New Zealand preferred at 3.50. France are a 5.00 chance, ahead of Ireland 6.00, Australia 8.00, England 8.95 and Argentina 29.00. Much sooner, though, there's the southern hemisphere Rugby Championship, starting in mid-August, and the Women's Rugby World Cup, starting a week later. Billions of sports bettor eyes around the world will turn to the English Premier League, which kicks off on 15 August. Defending champions Liverpool are 2.90 favourites to do it again, with Arsenal at 3.25, Manchester City at 3.95 and Chelsea at 9.50. Newly promoted Sunderland and Burnley are 1,000-1 chances – and 1.33 and 1.36 favourites for relegation. Those odds will change a lot in time and, to tie up the value of your hunch, this might be a good time to strike. In Italy's Serie A, Napoli are 2.80 for another win. In Spain's La Liga, Real Madrid (1.72) edge perennial fierce rivals Barcelona (2.20). It's not only the strongest country competitions that are open for a football bet. Punters can venture as far afield as leagues in Finland, Mexico, China, Slovenia and Ecuador. Horse racing On the horse racing front, locally it's a fairly quiet time as everyone catches their breath and starts preparing for the Highveld spring season. For the farsighted, Betway odds are available on next year's Cheltenham Festival in the UK. As if to mock the long-range forecasters, the favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup is a horse called Inothewayyourthinkin (4.50). These Betway odds are correct at time of publishing and subject to change.

Orlando Pirates send home trialist after short training stint
Orlando Pirates have reportedly closed the door on Zambian striker Enock Sakala Jr., ending his brief trial with the club following an unfortunate injury blow. The 23-year-old, who previously featured for Chippa United and Egyptian outfit Modern Sport, joined the Buccaneers' pre-season camp in Johannesburg at the start of July, hoping to earn a permanent contract. However, Sakala has now returned to Zambia, with little hope of signing for the Soweto giants ahead of the 2025/2026 season. Sakala impressed early on in training, showing strong intent and sharpness in front of goal. But his progress came to a sudden halt when he sustained an injury that ultimately ended his trial prematurely. 'Enock Sakala Jr. has gone back home to Zambia after picking up an injury while on trial at Pirates. He was doing well and showing signs of hunger, but the knock proved to be costly. He is unlikely to get the deal now and it's unclear if he will be getting another opportunity at the club any time soon,' said a source. The setback not only robbed Sakala of vital momentum but also forced Pirates to reconsider his potential contribution to the squad. Despite Sakala's exit, the Orlando Pirates technical team remains eager to bolster their attack. With a long and competitive season ahead, the club is actively exploring options to find the right striker to strengthen their frontline. The Buccaneers are preparing for a high-stakes campaign, and squad depth in the attacking department remains a key priority. Should a suitable candidate emerge, Pirates are ready to act swiftly in the transfer market. Do Orlando Pirates need another forward? Are Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engaged?
On 24 July 2025, Travis Kelce took to Instagram to post a collection of photos featuring himself, Taylor Swift, and their loved ones. One particular photo caught fans' attention and sparked speculation about the couple's relationship status. The picture in question? Travis' lock screen: a photo of himself and Taylor with her hand raised, seemingly showcasing a ring. Could the fans be right? Are Tayvis engaged? The Story of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance kicked off in the summer (our winter) of 2023 after Travis made his affections for Taylor known following her Eras Tour performance in Kansas City. Their relationship became official in September 2023 when Taylor was spotted at a Chiefs game. Since then, the couple has been seen together at various events and romantic rendezvous. Fans, particularly the Swifties, noticed a photo of Travis and Taylor where her hand appears to be displaying a ring on Travis' lock screen. This lead to speculation that the couple might be engaged. This suspicion isn't entirely unfounded given the nature of the photo. In addition to that, it's been just over two years since their memorable moment at the Eras Tour in Kansas City. With only a few months left until the two-year mark of their official relationship, excitement among the fans is warranted. According to E! News , the ring that Taylor was seen wearing is not an engagement ring (sorry Swifties). Rather, it is Travis' Super Bowl ring, which is arguably just as cute. Nonetheless, the photos Travis Kelce shared mark a significant milestone for the couple as they are now Instagram official. The couple appears to be happy and taking things slowly which is all a true Swiftie could ask for. Who knows, an actual engagement may be just around the corner.
