KUCHING (May 19): A total of 46 foreign nationals were detained by the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) Sarawak during an 'Ops Gegar' raid at three entertainment centres in Serian, Bau, and Kuching last weekend
In a statement, JIM Sarawak said the intelligence-led operations saw 71 individuals inspected, with 46 arrested for various offences under the Immigration Act.
'Those detained comprise 42 women and three men, all of whom are Indonesian nationals; as well as one Filipino woman.
'Among the offences identified were misuse of visit passes, lack of valid travel documents, and overstaying beyond the permitted period,' the statement said.
According to the department, some individuals attempted to flee during the operation.
'They tried to escape into nearby forested areas, but their efforts were successfully thwarted,' it added.
All detained foreign nationals have been placed in the Immigration Detention Depot for investigation and further action under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.
Meanwhile, the owners of the affected entertainment premises have also been subjected to legal action and issued a Witness Summons Notice to assist with the authorities' investigations

40 held in Esscom's operation in Tawau, Kalabakan

Published on: Tuesday, July 29, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 29, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Among those detained during the integrated operation. TAWAU: A total of 40 individuals were arrested during a three-day integrated operation in the Tawau and Kalabakan districts, which concluded last Saturday. The joint operation, led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), targeted illegal immigrants, drug-related activities, smuggling, and various other offences. Of those detained, 21 were illegal immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia. They have since been handed over to the Immigration Department in Tawau for further action under Sections 15(1)(c) and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos said the operation, a collaboration involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Armed Forces (ATM), Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), and other federal, state, and local agencies, aimed to restore public order and enforce laws across the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). 'Raids were carried out at the old Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Jetty, Road Check Point (RCP) Kalabakan, and several suburban settlements and villages known for illegal activity,' he said in a statement on Monday. The remaining 19 detainees included two suspected drug dealers, who were brought to Tawau District Police Headquarters for urine screening under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Poisons Act 1952. The authorities also seized 125.64 grammes of syabu, 41 bottles of ketum juice (1.5 litres each), and RM950 in cash. Enforcement personnel inspected 146 individuals, 26 premises and three vehicles. Several violations were identified, including illegal electricity connections in settlements, which caused an about RM750,000 in losses to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB). Action was taken under Section 61(3) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024. The operation also saw the issuance of 35 traffic summonses and two vehicle inspection notices under the Road Transport Act 1987 by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and traffic police. Victor said the operation was part of Op Sanggah Esscom, a continuous nationwide effort to bolster existing enforcement by PDRM, ATM and APMM. 'Esscom remains committed to our principle of 'No Day Without Operation' to prevent foreign criminal elements from threatening the peace in Eastern Sabah,' he added. He also thanked all 254 personnel involved in the operation and urged the public to continue reporting security-related incidents in Esszone by contacting the Esscom Operations Centre at 089-863181 or via WhatsApp at 011-63311072. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The arrests were made last Thursday after two raids were conducted in the Klang Valley. The first raid saw the arrest of a syndicate member at a shopping mall car park, said acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad. 'Inspections of his vehicle led to the discovery of a bag containing around 10.34kg of suspected syabu. 'At the same time, a second raid at the same area led to the arrest of two other suspects, including an Indonesian,' he said. In total, three men aged between 32 and 61 were nabbed. The arrests were made while the suspects were moving the drugs around. Follow-up investigations led to another raid at a terrace house within a gated community in Seri Kembangan, where 122 packages of suspected syabu weighing 135.34kg were seized. The total seized drugs were estimated to be worth around RM4.66mil. 'It is believed that this syndicate has been active since May. 'The two Malaysian men arrested were believed to be the main leader and transporter,' DCP Mohamed Usuf said. He added that the house owner would be called in to record his statement. For now, investigations are ongoing to determine the role of the Indonesian member of the syndicate and to trace more members of the syndicate. It is believed that the group was distributing the drugs in and around the Klang Valley, as well as to Indonesia. All the suspects have been remanded for six to seven days from last Friday.
