Nightclub raid uncovers foreign GROs earning thousands in tips

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign nightclub guest relations officers (GROs) in Kuchai Lama were found earning thousands in tips before immigration officers raided the premises, detaining 20 people. The revelation came from a local woman in her 50s, believed to be the person in charge of the establishment. The woman was among 20 individuals detained during an Ops Gegar raid by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department yesterday. Kuala Lumpur Immigration Director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said a search of the premises uncovered garlands with tip values ranging from RM100 to RM2,000. "Six women believed to be working as GROs were detained — three Thai nationals and three Vietnamese. Also arrested were four Taiwanese men, five Bangladeshi men, and one Chinese man. "One Malaysian woman, suspected to be the club's manager, was also detained," he told reporters at the raid location today. According to him, the foreign nationals were detained under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963. He added that the local suspects will be investigated under Section 56(1)(d) of the same Act for allegedly harbouring undocumented migrants.

Immigration busts prostitution syndicate, 89 arrested

PUTRAJAYA: Immigration Department raids on three Klang Valley locations on Wednesday (July 9) have led to 89 arrests, including locals, in a crackdown on a suspected prostitution syndicate. Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said 'Ops Gegar' involved simultaneous raids in Kuchai, Sri Petaling and Cheras, targeting premises suspected of harbouring foreign sex workers. In the first raid at 3pm, officers arrested 26 foreign women, namely 11 from Vietnam, eight from Indonesia, six from Thailand and one from Myanmar, believed to be offering sexual services. Two men from Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as four local men acting as 'guardians' of the premises, were also detained. "These operations were disguised as budget hotels and offering sex services from RM160 to RM480," Zakaria said, adding that the syndicate used websites to promote services, with transactions arranged via WhatsApp and Telegram. At around 10.55pm the same day, a second operation was launched at an entertainment centre allegedly employing foreign guest relations officers (GROs). Of 96 individuals screened, 61 were arrested, including 44 Thai women, four Laotians, and two women each from Vietnam and Myanmar. Also detained were five Bangladeshi men and four Thai men suspected of working at the venue, while seven locals were issued notices to report to the Immigration headquarters to assist in investigations. All detainees were transferred to the Putrajaya Immigration Depot for further investigation under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Passport Act 1966. - Bernama
