Rohingya couple & 5 minors detained

Time of India22-06-2025
Silchar: A Rohingya couple and five minors were detained near Hilara railway station in Cachar district on Saturday evening for allegedly attempting to enter Bangladesh illegally.
After their "suspicious behaviour" raised alarm, locals and VDP members in the Katigorah constituency apprehended the group.
According to reports, the group hired an autorickshaw from Hilara railway station with the intention of travelling to Kalain. However, their inconsistent behaviour and inability to clearly specify their destination prompted locals to alert the police.
Police arrived at the scene and questioned the group.
They initially claimed to be from Delhi but failed to provide details about their identity or destination. The autorickshaw used by the detainees was seized as evidence. Police transferred the group from Katigorah to Silchar Sadar police station for further investigation.
Speaking to media, SP (Cachar) Numal Mahatta said the group was living in Jammu and Kashmir and were in India illegally for some time. Mahatta added that they were likely attempting to enter Bangladesh via the border, a route reportedly exploited by Rohingya to return to their homeland.
Sources indicate that Rohingya individuals living in India have frequently use such routes to attempt re-entry into Bangladesh, with several apprehensions in recent years.

To facilitate orderly migration and timely exit, India has a robust visa and immigration regime in place to enable lawful inward movement of persons including professionals and skilled work force, business persons, students and foreign tourists. However, illegal migration has security and socio-economic ramifications which are often well beyond law enforcement.' The Centre said people overstaying without valid passport or other travel documents or any other document of legal authority should be identified. TMC alleges illegal detention of 444 Bengal migrants in Odisha's Jharsuguda

BHUBANESHWAR: A day after 444 suspected Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants were detained for verification in Odisha's Jharsuguda, the Trinamool Congress alleged they were migrant workers from West Bengal being held illegally, sparking a political row over the verification drive. Responding to the allegations, the Odisha government said it understood the concerns raised regarding the holding of individuals in Jharsuguda but asserted that safeguarding national interest and security remained paramount and cannot be compromised. Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP from Krishnanagar, Mahua Moitra, alleged that migrant workers from West Bengal were illegally detained in Jharsuguda. In a video message posted on X, Moitra said 23 workers from her constituency's Panighata area were detained in Odisha as part of a documentation verification drive. "This video is to bring to the urgent notice of the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary, and the DGP of Odisha that 23 workers from my Lok Sabha constituency in Mirzapur village under Panighata panchayat in Nadia district are currently illegally detained in an interrogation centre by Orient police station in Jharsuguda district," she said. She claimed that a total of 444 Bengali-speaking workers from West Bengal are being held in Jharsuguda district, of which 23 are from her constituency. Moitra asserted that all the 23 people have valid documents with them. Similarly, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam claimed that the Odisha government recently detained over 200 migrant workers from various districts of West Bengal including Murshidabad, Birbhum, Malda, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman and South 24 Parganas on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Meanwhile, a senior Odisha Police officer said the 444 persons under scrutiny lack valid documentation to establish their residency or citizenship, which necessitated a thorough verification process to ascertain their identities.

Over 400 Bangladeshi, Rohingya Immigrants Detained In Odisha

Jharsuguda: Police has started the interrogation of 444 people suspected to be illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants living in Odisha's Jharsuguda district. Among those detained, 265 individuals were temporarily housed at Surabhi Kalyana Mandap, while the remaining were moved to a holding centre on the premises of Black Diamond College of Engineering and Technology. Preliminary reports suggest that several of the detainees have been working as labourers, masons or hawkers across the district. Pending interrogation and document checks, those found staying in India illegally will face legal action and be deported. The individuals were detained in an operation launched, on instructions of the Union Home ministry, to identify foreign nationals who may have entered India without legal documentation. It was launched after reports of a large number of Bangladeshi migrants staying illegally in the district, as per sources. The detentions have brought to light growing concerns over unauthorised immigration in Odisha, raising questions about border security and economic migration.
