Amanda Seyfried says Paramount still owes her money for using her face on 'Mean Girls' merch
Amanda Seyfried still loves seeing her face on "Mean Girls" T-shirts — but she's also wondering why she never saw any cut of the merchandise profits.
Seyfried, who played the ditzy "Plastics" clique member Karen Smith in the 2004 teen comedy, recently sat down with her "Jennifer's Body" costar Adam Brody for Variety's "Actors on Actors" video series. When asked about her iconic role, she said "Mean Girls" is still a big part of her life more than two decades after its release.
"I'm a little resentful because Paramount still owes me some money [for] the likeness," Seyfried told Brody. "Every store sells 'Mean Girls' T-shirts with our faces, photographs. And I'm like, don't I [get something from that]?"
"Is it 'cause I was 17 and dumb?" Seyfried added, referring to her age when she was signed on for the role.
It's not uncommon for actors to receive royalties if their name or likeness is used in merchandising, although deals vary and tend to be negotiated by lawyers and agents ahead of filming. It's also not unheard of for studios to be stingy with payments.
For example, James Best, who played Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in the '80s film "The Dukes of Hazzard," reportedly signed a contract with Warner Bros. Entertainment that guaranteed him "5% of merchandising revenue from products that featured his identity," per The Hollywood Reporter. However, in 2011, he sued the studio for withholding millions in compensation. (The parties reached an undisclosed settlement two years later.)
The question of actors controlling their own images became a central issue during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood, when the union fought to require "informed consent" for an actor's likeness to be replicated with AI.

One fan in the crowd even mentioned the name of Swift's album when Healy called himself a poet, as seen in Variety's viral clip. Swift, however, hasn't spoken about Healy outside of her music since their breakup. She started dating Kelce weeks later, and the couple is now very serious. During their Saturday date, they even matched in white ensembles, with Swift wearing a houndstooth Balmain dress. In December, a source told Us Weekly that Swift believes Kelce is her person. 'Taylor does feel like Travis is The One, but jumping in[to marriage] is not her style,' the source said. 'That's just not how she does [things]. Marriage is a big deal, and she wants [it to be] forever.' On June 12, a source told People that Swift is thrilled to have a lighter travel schedule, giving her more time to support Kelce during his upcoming NFL season. 'Taylor plans to be at as many of his games as possible,' the source said. 'They've both had such demanding schedules for so long, so having this stretch of time where things aren't quite as chaotic feels like a welcome change. It's a chance for them to settle into more of a routine and they're both really happy about that.'

The 1975 just played their first headlining set at Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage, which was a homecoming of sorts as the band had played in 2014 and 2016. Now, they brought out all the hits, from 'Chocolate' to 'About You,' which is rumored to be inspired by frontman Matty Healy's ex, Taylor Swift. Lest we forget, Taylor dropped her Grammy-nominated effort, The Tortured Poets Department, last spring. Most of the album is speculated to have been inspired by her shifty relationship dynamic with the 'Love It If We Made It' hitmaker, and he seemingly referenced its title during his Glastonbury set. In a video captured by Variety, the musician raised a glass of beer with the audience before giving a speech between songs. 'What this moment is making me realize is that I probably am the best...I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation,' he told the crowd. 'The best, what do we say — a poet — ladies and gentlemen, is what I am.' After Taylor's 6-year relationship with Joe Alwyn came to an end, she and Matty reportedly dated from May to June 2023. He not only attended several of her Eras Tour shows but also performed alongside one of Tay's opening acts, Phoebe Bridgers, at one of the stops. When The Tortured Poets Department dropped, Us Weekly reported that The 1975 frontman was 'completely blindsided' by the project and had 'mixed feelings' about it. 'He loves the attention it's brought to him, [but] he also thinks it's hilarious because at no time [were they] ever serious,' an anonymous insider said. 'For her to be saying things about baby carriages…and living together—he says it had never even come up. He's taking it in stride.'
