Girl killed when dirt bike hits mailbox & is run over by unknown vehicle, SC coroner says
Warrenville's Faith Williams was the dirt bike rider who died Friday, Coroner Darryl Ables said.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:20 p.m. on S.C. 421/Augusta Road, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
In the 1600 block of Augusta Road, near the intersection with Langley Street, a Honda 80R dirt bike was driving north on the sidewalk, Glover said. The dirt bike crashed into a mailbox then spilled into the road where it was hit by an unknown vehicle that was driving south on Augusta Road, according to Glover.
The unknown vehicle then drove away, Glover said.
Faith died at the scene, according to Ables.
Glover said the dirt bike driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the dirt bike riders were wearing a helmet.
Ables said that both his office and the Highway Patrol are investigating to determine if Faith's injuries were caused by the initial crash, which he called an accident, or being struck by the vehicle. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry, according to Ables.
The unknown vehicle might have suffered damage to the front passenger side, Ables said.
Anyone with information about the collision, or the vehicle and driver involved, is asked to call the Highway Patrol at 803-896-9621 or 800-768-1503, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip. Tips can also be texted to *HP.
Through Feb. 23, at least 92 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

Arrest warrants issued for Texas Dems who fled state
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday afternoon said he had ordered state police to find and arrest Democratic lawmakers after the state House issued civil arrest warrants — though state law enforcement is restricted to making arrests in Texas. Why it matters: It's the latest attempt by Abbott to compel Democrats back to the Capitol, escalating a standoff that began when over 50 Democrats fled the state to delay votes on a redistricting map that will give Republicans five more congressional seats. The latest:"By fleeing the state, Texas House Democrats are holding hostage critical legislation to aid flood victims and advance property tax relief. There are consequences for dereliction of duty," Abbott said in a news release. Abbott added that he ordered the state Department of Public Safety to find, arrest and return "any member who has abandoned their duty to Texans." This order will remain in effect until all missing Democrat House members are accounted for and brought to the Texas Capitol." Yes, but: DPS officers are state law enforcement agents, meaning their authority ends at the Texas state border. If lawmakers are found within Texas, DPS can detain them and escort them to the Capitol. Catch up quick: Democrats left the state Sunday to try to stall a vote on a President Trump -led proposal to redraw the districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections that could net Republicans up to five seats. The Democrats face a $500 fine for every day they break quorum. The other side: Democrats say the redistricting map is "illegal voter suppression of Black and Latino Central Texans" and a "threat to American democracy." Lawmakers who left the state appear unfazed by the governor's threats earlier to remove them from office. "He's trying to get sound bites and he has no legal mechanism," Houston Rep. Jolanda Jones said in a press conference in New York on Monday.

18-wheeler driver who allegedly fell asleep on the highway, killing 5, indicted on 9 felony charges
The man who allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler causing a deadly crash in Kaufman County has been indicted on nine felony counts related to the crash. Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, was indicted on four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and five counts of manslaughter, according to Kaufman County court records. Five people died and a sixth person was hospitalized after the crash on I-20 near Hiram Road on June 28, authorities said. The crash happened at about 2:40 p.m., when the Texas Department of Public Safety said Gonzalez-Companioni allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of his 18-wheeler and did not see stalled traffic in front of him. He then struck a Ford F-150 carrying five people. Four of the five people in the Ford F-150 were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fifth was flown to a hospital in critical condition, DPS said in a news release. The 18-wheeler driven by Gonzalez-Companioni was then pushed into two other 18-wheelers, causing one to jack-knife and strike a Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang, and a Honda passenger vehicle, according to DPS. One person in the Jeep Compass struck by the jack-knifed semi was also pronounced dead at the scene, DPS said.
