Notre Dame coach Mike Mickens to be inducted into Cincinnati Athletics 2025 Hall of Fame
It's been a notable offseason for Notre Dame, from great success on the recruiting trail to various preseason honors, and the Fighting Irish can add one more accolade to the group. Defensive backs coach Mike Mickens has been named one of six inductees into the University of Cincinnati's Athletics 2025 Hall of Fame class. It's a big honor for the former Bearcats cornerback. Mickens was a first-team FWAA All-American In 2007 and a four-time all-Big East selection who remains the program's career leader in interceptions with 14. He starred for the Bearcats from 2005-08, appearing in 47 games under Mark Dantonio and former Fighting Irish boss Brian Kelly. In addition to his record for picks, he recorded 234 tackles (nine for a loss), a sack and a forced fumble. Three of his interceptions were also returned for touchdowns. Tony Pike to be inducted in Cincinnati Bearcats Hall of Fame
Former University of Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Tony Pike is heading to the James P. Kelly Athletic Hall of Fame. The former Reading High School product was informed of his induction by UC athletic director John Cunningham who called Pike's radio show with Austin Elmore on ESPN 1530 July 31. An emotional Pike was greeted by his wife and three kids in the studio with balloons. "UC has been a part of my life since I remember," Pike told Cunningham. "I grew up going to games with my grandpa. I love the University more than anything. This is truly an awesome honor." The famous No. 15 who toiled for the Blue Devils before waiting for his opportunity at UC later told The Enquirer of his gratification. "I'm a product of so many people around me," Pike said. "My family poured so much into me and I'm so thankful for them. My parents worked endlessly to give me every opportunity to succeed in life. My grandpa got me started with my love for UC by taking me to all the games. I got to live out my dream by playing and contributing to the Bearcats. I wouldn't be here without so many great teammates and coaches. I'm grateful for them and I'm extremely grateful for the system I have in place at home with my amazing wife and awesome kids." The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Pike was a UC Bearcat from 2005-2009 and passed for 5,018 yards and 49 touchdowns in his career. Under Brian Kelly, he led UC to the Orange Bowl vs. Virginia Tech after the 2008 season and the Sugar Bowl vs. Florida after the 2009 season. Tony Pike's Cincinnati Bearcats highlights In 2009, he threw for 2,520 yards and 29 touchdowns despite missing three games to injury. His most famous pass was the touchdown toss to Armon Binns in snowy Pittsburgh when the Bearcats erased a 31-10 deficit and beat the Panthers 45-44, preserving their unbeaten record. Pike was First Team All-Big East in 2009 and Second Team All-Big East in 2008. He finished his UC career throwing a touchdown in 17 straight starts. Pike, in addition to his radio duties on ESPN 1530 has been the sideline reporter during UC football radio broadcasts with Dan Hoard and Jim Kelly in recent years. Cause of Death Revealed for 18-Year-Old Cincinnati Freshman Football Player Jeremiah Kelly: Report
University of Cincinnati football player Jeremiah Kelly's cause of death has been revealed. The 18-year-old died from cardiac hypertrophy, a condition where the heart muscles thicken, according to a coroner's report obtained by ESPN. Kelly passed away 'unexpectedly' at his residence on the morning of April 22. According to a GoFundMe set up by a family friend, he died in his sleep. A spokesperson for the University of Cincinnati said in a statement to ESPN that before his death, Kelly 'passed a pre-participation physical examination required by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)' and had just completed spring practice with the Bearcats. "The Cincinnati football program and athletics department continue to mourn Jeremiah's passing. He is deeply missed by all of us," the spokesperson added to the outlet. Kelly was an early enrollee at the University of Cincinnati and was listed among Northeast Ohio's Top 25 prospects, the Cincinnati Bengals said. He graduated from Avon High School, where he achieved a 16-0 record with the team and helped the school win its first state championship in 2024. Kelly's mother, Chiniqua, said that he "never had any [health] issues" and that he had been relaxing at home the day before his sudden death, per ESPN. He also wore a heart monitor when playing sports, she told the outlet. While the autopsy results have provided 'some closure,' Chiniqua said she is still left with questions. "It just makes you want to be more aware, like if there's something that you can possibly save your child from," she told ESPN.
