EGA marks 50% milestone for UAE's major recycling facility
The 170,000 tonnes per year facility is being built next to EGA's existing smelter in Al Taweelah.
So far, more than 1.2 million hours of work have been completed on the project, with zero Lost Time Incidents.
The largest furnace in the UAE, with a melt rate of 17 tonnes per hour, is on track to be fully installed in June.
The new plant will process post-consumer aluminium scrap and pre-consumer aluminium scrap into low-carbon, high-quality 'premium aluminium' billets, which will be marketed by EGA under the product name RevivAL.
Most aluminium scrap generated in the UAE is currently exported for processing outside the country and is lost to the national economy. When the recycling facility is complete, EGA expects to become the largest consumer of aluminium scrap in the UAE.
First hot metal is expected from EGA's new recycling plant in Al Taweelah in the first half of 2026.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said, 'Recycling is a key global growth opportunity for our industry and for EGA. We have made decisive steps in developing a global recycling business and here in the UAE, with the construction of the recycling plant. The facility will enable us to expand our low-carbon metal portfolio for our local and global customers, and is a new milestone for Make it In the Emirates.'
Global demand for recycled aluminium is expected to double by 2040. During 2024, EGA made material progress in the development of a global aluminium recycling business with the acquisitions of Leichtmetall, a European specialty foundry, and Spectro Alloys, a leading secondary foundry alloy producer in the United States.
EGA was the first company to produce aluminium commercially using solar power, which is marketed under the product name CelestiAL. In 2023, EGA expanded its low-carbon metal portfolio, combining solar and recycled aluminium to achieve even lower carbon intensity.
Meanwhile in September 2024 Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest 'premium aluminium' producer in the world, today announced the completion of the acquisition of a majority stake in American aluminium recycling firm Spectro Alloys Corporation.
The acquisition means that EGA now has production on four continents, from bauxite mining to aluminium recycling.
Spectro Alloys adds significantly to EGA's existing business in the US with domestic metal production. The US was already one of EGA's largest global markets.
In 2023, EGA sold approximately 550,000 tonnes of primary aluminium in the country.
Demand for recycled aluminium in the US is expected to reach some 7.6 million tonnes per year by 2033, according to CRU, an independent business intelligence organisation. The US is currently the world's second biggest recycled aluminium market.
EGA has acquired 80 per cent of Spectro Alloys, with the company's owner-managers retaining a 20 per cent shareholding.
Funding of the transaction is in accordance with EGA's green finance framework, which was announced earlier this year.
Spectro Alloys is a leading secondary foundry alloy producer in the United States, with some 110 thousand tonnes of aluminium ingots production. The company is implementing an expansion plan at its Rosemount site that will add around 55,000 tonnes per year of secondary billets production capacity in the first, which is expected to be completed in 2025.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said, 'Aluminium is an essential material for the development of a more sustainable society, and demand for low carbon primary and recycled aluminium will grow significantly over the decades ahead. Developing a global business in recycling is a key strategic priority for EGA. We are taking rapid and decisive action, now with recycling operations in both the United States and Europe and our greenfield plant in the UAE progressing well. I welcome our new colleagues in Minnesota to EGA.'
Luke Palen, President of Spectro Alloys, said, 'Becoming part of EGA is an exciting new chapter in Spectro Alloys' five decades-long journey.
EGA's global resources and strength in marketing aluminium in the United States will accelerate Spectro's growth.'
'We are now well-placed to develop even further as a leading recycling company, serving our customers even better, creating more job opportunities for people in Minnesota, and contributing to the production of aluminium products that are both environmentally responsible and Made in America.'
Aluminium is infinitely-recyclable. Recycling aluminium requires 95 per cent less energy than making new metal, generating a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions.

Early wins for US, but dynamics of EU alliance is changing
4 Aug 2025 23:55 SULTAN KHALIFA AL RUBAEI*Tariffs have once again taken centre stage in US and international trade, following the August deadline set by United States President Donald Trump for countries to present trade agreement proposals or face steep tariffs. The US administration secured deals with several of its trading partners, most notably the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom. However, the global trade landscape now appears to be bracing for profound changes in trade rules that go beyond the post-World War II US agreement with the EU included a 15% tariff on European goods (significantly lower than the 30% previously threatened by the US president), an exemption for pharmaceutical products, and limited exceptions for aircraft and medical equipment. In return, the EU committed to purchasing $750 billion worth of US energy products and investing approximately $600 billion in the US. This agreement secured substantial additional revenue for the American 'America First' policy pursued by the United States in its dealings with both partners and non-partners pushes it toward manoeuvring economic policies. But beyond the deals and manoeuvres lies US-European relations, particularly with the EU, the foundation of which is no longer only partnership, but also competition, or rather, the partnership is taking a backseat in the face of competition. This shift may be attributed to internal divisions among the EU's 27 member states, the multiple challenges facing the ageing continent, and the heavy reliance on the United States when it comes to defence forces. At this time, none of the EU countries can afford the economic strain of a trade the American side, the current administration has shown little regard for the mutual trust in the transatlantic free trade relations, nor for the existing rules of international trade. As a result, there is a possibility that other global actors may adopt similar protectionist policies, posing a threat to the stability of international markets, particularly in light of the tensions that the current environment may create at the level of international trade the changes and uncertainty, the EU chose to stay aligned with America, albeit at a high cost. The newly imposed tariffs place a heavy financial burden on EU-based companies, forcing them to bear additional billions in expenses. While EU member states acknowledge the agreement's potential harm to their economies, they have viewed it as the best possible option under the current circumstances. It may mark the beginning of a longer negotiation process rather than the end, given the limited options available. Without formal trade agreements with Washington, the EU risks being subjected to US terms, leading to imbalanced deals or potential trade United States emerged as the winner in the agreement with the EU. However, the outcome also places a burden on American consumers, who are likely to face higher prices for imported goods as companies pass on the additional costs. This is particularly significant given that Germany is one of the largest exporters to the US, with exports exceeding €161 billion in 2024. Ireland's exports to the US reached €72 billion and Italy's €64 billion in the same year, according to Eurostat, the EU's statistical office. In total, 20% of the EU's goods exports are directed to the United States. This makes the agreement the least damaging option for Europe to avoid a trade confrontation between two allies who together account for nearly one-third of global trade. The effects of this deal may become visible in the US market in the coming this agreement, the US aims to achieve economic balance and address its trade deficit with the EU, which reached $235.6 billion in 2024. Although the deal helps avoid a trade war, it shows that the dynamics of old alliances are shifting, international trade is being reshaped amid global economic uncertainty, and competition for each country to achieve huge gains has become a defining feature of today's international economic and trade relations. *The columnist is a researcher with the think-tank firm, TRENDS Research & Advisory

UAE: SCA developing four legislations on carbon credits, retail Sukuk
Waleed Al Awadhi, CEO of the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA), has announced that the authority is studying and preparing four regulatory projects 'legislations' aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of financial markets, increasing transparency, and protecting investors. Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), he said that the legislations under development include the regulation of trading platforms for carbon credits, a strategic project supporting national efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. The authority will set licencing and operational requirements for these platforms, while operators will establish their own operational rules. Al Awadhi added that the SCA is finalising a draft regulation for retail Sukuk, designed to broaden the investor base by enabling access to the bonds and Sukuk market through fractional investment instruments, while safeguarding investors' rights within a comprehensive regulatory framework. This is expected to boost liquidity and expand financial inclusion. He noted that the SCA is also undertaking legislative updates to the capital market authority law and financial sector regulations to expand the authority's powers, enabling it to keep pace with modern financial activities and implement advanced supervisory mechanisms to manage risks and protect investors. Another legislation in progress concerns the division of public joint stock companies, providing greater flexibility in corporate structuring and enhancing operational efficiency. The Board of Directors recently approved a comprehensive regulatory framework for the recognition and valuation of goodwill in public joint stock companies, as an intangible asset encompassing brand strength and corporate reputation. Al Awadhi stressed that this package of projects aims to enhance the efficiency of the country's financial markets, broaden the investor base, and diversify financial products, thereby consolidating the UAE's position as a leading global financial centre combining efficiency, reliability, and sustainable growth. He also affirmed that the Authority has made significant progress in strengthening the UAE's position in the field of sustainable finance by issuing a comprehensive regulatory framework for green bonds, green sukuk and sustainability-linked instruments. The framework aligns with global best practices and obliges issuers to direct proceeds towards environmentally sustainable projects. He pointed out that the authority has extended the exemption from registration fees for companies wishing to list green bonds and Sukuk, encouraging greater uptake. The total value of issues registered for listing reached AED5.5 billion during the year. Since the regulation came into effect, the SCA has approved the registration of 11 green bonds and Sukuk issues with a total value of approximately AED24.6 billion. Meanwhile, the total value of sustainability-linked local and international issuances amounted to US$8.7 billion, of which US$6.7 billion were listed on local and international markets. He affirmed that all the authority's initiatives aim to enhance market efficiency, expand financial inclusion, and offer a diverse range of financial products to meet the needs of various types of investors. Al Awadhi also emphasised the SCA's commitment to balancing support for innovation with maintaining financial stability and investor protection, thereby reinforcing the UAE's status as a leading strategic hub in international financial markets.
