Recycling aluminium saves energy and reduces emissions by up to 95% compared to primary aluminium
The VELUX Group has signed a multi-year commercial agreement with Novelis, the aluminum rolling and recycling company, to supply recycled content aluminum. The partnership will enable the production of flat-rolled aluminum containing over 70% recycled content, which will be used to manufacture VELUX roof windows and accessories. By adopting this sustainable solution, VELUX aims to further reduce its carbon emissions.
Following an initial letter of intent between Novelis and VELUX Group, which was signed in 2022, a long-term commercial agreement has been established. This agreement solidifies their shared goal of achieving a level of 3kg CO2 eq/kg flat rolled aluminum or below by 2030.
'This agreement really demonstrates our strong commitment to reach this very ambitious goal within just five years,' says Klaus Lorentzen, Senior Vice President Products and Innovation for the VELUX Group. 'It also secures the steady supply for several years of a key roof window material with a desirably low carbon footprint. With more than 70% recycled content, this Novelis aluminium is key for our efforts to decarbonise VELUX products.'
Recycling aluminium saves energy and reduces emissions by up to 95% compared to primary aluminium, making it a key enabler in advancing decarbonised solutions for building materials and construction. The aluminium alloy provided by Novelis to VELUX is specifically optimised for use in roof window production.
'This agreement with VELUX is a catalyst for transformation and we have made significant progress together in developing alloys that not only meet demanding performance standards but also support a circular economy,' says Michael Hahne, Vice President of Commercial for Novelis Europe. 'At Novelis, we are proud to lead the aluminium industry in advancing high-recycled-content alloys. Partnering with strong brands like VELUX is a testament for sustainable innovation. By giving aluminium scrap new life again and again, we are working towards our 3×30 Vision by becoming the world´s lowest-emissions provider of flat-rolled aluminium.'
Novelis has been a trusted supplier to VELUX for over four decades. Since 2022, the companies have been collaborating closely to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with the aluminum used in VELUX products. Remarkably, more than 50% of the aluminum supplied by Novelis to VELUX has already been replaced with high-recycled content. The partners are committed to steadily increasing this percentage in the coming years.
'Aluminium is an essential material used for external protection of our roof windows and accessories and therefore also a significant contributor to our Scope 3 emissions,' adds Lorentzen. 'So, the type of aluminium we use in our production must contain a high degree of recycled content to meet our decarbonisation targets. By shifting to low-carbon aluminium, we are paving the way for the next generation of VELUX roof windows and accessories.'
Aluminium, one of several key materials, is being investigated by VELUX Group with its suppliers to help reduce its products' carbon footprint. Since over 98% of the company's carbon footprint originates from Scope 3, value chain emissions, decarbonisation efforts necessitate effective collaboration with key suppliers.

LG'S LATEST SUSTAINABILITY REPORT HIGHLIGHTS PROGRESS TOWARD 2030 ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS

LG Electronics (LG) has released its 2024–2025 Sustainability Report, highlighting the company's strong progress toward its 2030 environmental targets, including reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advancements in resource circularity. The report outlines the company's wide-ranging efforts to embed sustainability into its operations as part of its vision for a Better Life for All. In 2024, LG's Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions totaled 910,000 tons of CO? equivalent (tCO?eq), bringing the company close to its 2030 goal of 878,000 tons. The company had previously set itself the goal to reduce GHG emissions by 54.6 percent (compared to 2017 levels) by 2030. The early achievement of this goal was driven by proactive adoption of energy-efficient equipment and carbon-reduction technologies across multiple production processes. LG is also making headway in cutting Scope 3 emissions from product use through expanded application of AI and other energy-saving technologies. In 2024, the company reduced product carbon emissions by 19.4 percent compared to 2020. Notably, LG was the first South Korean home appliance manufacturer to have its emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets include a 20 percent cut in Scope 3 emissions across seven key product categories by 2030 (based on a 2020 baseline). Progress has also been made in resource circulation. LG achieved a 97.4 percent waste recycling rate at its global production sites in 2024 – surpassing its 2030 goal of 95 percent. The company also collected 532,630 tons of used electronics from 91 locations in 56 countries last year, bringing its cumulative total since 2006 to over 5 million tons. Additionally, LG increased the amount of recycled plastic used in its products by 36 percent year-over-year. LG remains committed to enhancing accessibility in its products and services. The LG Comfort Kit, designed to make appliances easier to use regardless of age, gender or ability, now includes 14 products. Accessibility features such as screen reading and simultaneous audio output for hearing aids and speakers on LG OLED TVs, as well as kiosks with height adjustment and tactile keypads, further reflect this commitment. The company also provides inclusive services including disability care programs, sign language consultations, senior support, and in-store educational sessions on safety, IT and culture. LG continues to strengthen its approach to responsible management through a governance structure rooted in compliance and ethics. The company's board of directors is guided by principles of independence, expertise and transparency, while its ESG Committee plays an expanding role in overseeing sustainability initiatives. In its supply chain, LG supports shared growth through third-party ESG audits aligned with Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) standards. As a result of its continued efforts, LG ranked in the 'Top 1%' of S&P Global's Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for the second year in a row. The company has also earned an 'A' grade from Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) for five consecutive years and has been included in the Dow Jones 'Best-in-Class World Index' for 13 straight years.

Belkin Reaches Carbon Neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 Emissions

Belkin, a consumer electronics brand, has released its 2024 Impact Report, announcing a major milestone, achieving carbon neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This marks a key step in the company's broader goal of reaching full carbon neutrality by 2030. Now in its 40th year, Belkin continues to focus on sustainability and responsible product design. The company reported solid progress in reducing emissions and switching to more eco-friendly materials. Belkin reduced 1,890 metric tons of CO2e at the product level, aligned with Scope 3 emissions. It also surpassed its single-use plastic packaging reduction target years ahead of schedule—cutting it by 89%. Since 2019, Belkin has saved over 2,183 metric tons of plastic, the equivalent of 114 million water bottles. The brand has now transitioned over 359 products to use 72–75% post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials. This change has replaced 432 metric tons of virgin plastic. In 2025, popular chargers and cables will feature up to 90% PCR materials, helping reduce emissions by up to 85%. All packaging will be plastic-free and Global Recycling Standard certified. Belkin also supports responsible recycling. It has helped recycle 28,445 metric tons of electronics, 11,463 metric tons of packaging, and 1,358 metric tons of batteries. For its ongoing sustainability efforts, Belkin earned a Silver Medal rating from EcoVadis, placing it in the top 15% globally among companies in the consumer electronics sector. Looking forward, Belkin remains committed to lowering its environmental impact. The company continues to invest in circular design and long-term sustainability strategies.
