Apple eyes Formula 1 streaming rights in bid to expand its live sports lineup
Rumors about Apple eyeing Formula 1 streaming rights aren't new. But after the successful $300 million box office take for its latest F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, it seems Cupertino really wants to add F1 to its sports offerings.

According to the Financial Times, Apple is in talks to acquire the US rights to stream Formula 1. While Apple has been careful to offer its Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball products worldwide, the approach might differ with Formula 1. The rights are currently with Disney's ESPN, but F1 also has the option to charge fans directly.

The publication says the race series earns $85 million a year from ESPN. But analysts at Citi estimate the next broadcast deal could be worth at least $121 million annually. Disney will likely make an offer to retain the streaming rights, especially since the audience has doubled over the past seven years. At the same time, F1 is prioritizing the U.S. market, as Liberty Media has added Miami and Las Vegas to the race calendar, alongside the Austin, Texas Grand Prix.

While people familiar with the matter say F1 might let ESPN retain the rights to stream the sport, Disney hasn't taken action during its exclusive negotiation window to strike a deal without competition.

With the success of F1 the movie and Netflix's popular Drive to Survive documentary series, this is a hot moment for Formula 1 to boost its revenue and for Apple to grow its sports lineup.
That said, we're still months away from finding out if Apple will seal the deal. ESPN holds the streaming rights through the end of the 2025 season.

When LeBron James decided to exercise his player option for the 2025-26 season on June 29, his agent, Rich Paul, issued a cryptic statement that acknowledged the Los Angeles Lakers are building for the future and that James wants to be in a situation where he can contend for the NBA championship. "A handful of teams -- including the Golden State Warriors, who tried to trade for James in 2023-24 -- considered again whether to make an offer, sources said," wrote Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst. The Warriors had previously contacted the Lakers about trading for James — once this past season just after the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic, and once previously just before the 2023-24 trade deadline. James is good friends with Warriors mainstays Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and he has hinted in the past that he would love to play on the same team as Curry. The two superstars did play together last summer as members of Team USA men's basketball and helped lead the squad to an Olympic gold medal. The NBA's all-time leading scorer has been quiet lately, which has lent a bit of mystery to the whole situation between his camp and the Lakers. Meanwhile, the team has gotten a bit closer to championship contention by signing center Deandre Ayton and forward Jake LaRavia as free agents.

He's good for the Bucs. But is he elite? Certainly an argument could be made that he's not. Especially with his history of drops. Otton was a fourth-round pick by the Bucs in 2022 out of then-Pac-12 powerhouse Washington. He had an impressive rookie campaign with 391 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered from drops. He posted just 42 catches on 65 targets with five drops, leading all tight ends. The next season wasn't much better, with three drops on 67 targets, and he got worse last season. In 2024, Otton posted 59 catches on 87 targets with 600 yards and four touchdowns but eight drops. Advertisement If Otton can clean up his pass catching, he'd be a far more effective offensive tool for Mayfield and the Bucs. In ProFootballFocus' rankings earlier this season, Otton was No. 20 overall, which actually sounds a little high, honestly. "Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. His 63.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 was a career high and also marks the first time he generated more than 1 yard per route run (1.31). If he can hang on to the ball (also three fumbles the past two years), Otton has the skills to rise on this list." There were several changes to Major League Baseball's All-Star Game rosters Friday, as some prominent players decided not to participate and left spots open for others, including some first-time participants. • Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, who would've been a candidate to start for the National League, will not participate Tuesday after getting named to the team for the third time. His spot went to San Diego Padres reliever Adrian Morejon, who has a 1.71 ERA in 45 appearances with two saves. The Padres are the first team to have three relievers named to an All-Star team in the same season, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Zack Wheeler has been dropped from the NL All-Star roster.
