Some public housing tenants skipped rent for over 2 decades, says Kuala Lumpur mayor
Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025
By: Anne Muhammad, FMT Text Size: Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif said an internal discussion will be held next week on measures to address the mounting rental arrears across PPR and PA units managed by DBKL. PETALING JAYA: Some public housing (PA) tenants have failed to pay rent for up to 26 years, with arrears reaching as high as RM39,140, Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif revealed. She said the monthly rental rate was RM124, excluding maintenance charges. The highest arrears were recorded at the People's Housing Programme (PPR) in Kampung Muhibbah (RM1.9 million) and Desa Rejang (RM1.28 million). To address the issue of mounting rental arrears across PPR and PA units managed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which now total RM70 million, she said an internal discussion would be held next week. 'I'll need to assess the situation because the measures we currently take involve meeting tenants face to face, asking why they haven't paid, and locking their water meters. 'We do have the authority to evict non-paying tenants, but most of them are from the B40 group, so we have to consider the situation carefully. 'I'll conduct an analysis and discuss the matter with federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa,' she told FMT.
Advertisement Maimunah said tenants often cite financial difficulties as the reason for not paying rent. 'But when we visit their areas, they complain about a lack of parking. I understand that having a car isn't a luxury anymore, it's a necessity. Still, people need to prioritise. 'At the moment, we're not taking strict action so some feel there's room not to pay,' she added. She said that in the upcoming discussions, DBKL would work on developing clearer procedures on housing and rental arrears. DBKL will also issue public notices to warn tenants with outstanding rent so that they are not caught off guard when enforcement begins. 'When we shut off the water supply, they often find a way to pay. Previously, we also introduced a scheme allowing them to settle arrears in instalments if they couldn't pay in full,' Maimunah said.

Bursa Malaysia records RM1.9 trillion in IPOs for 1H25
Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed KAMPAR: Bursa Malaysia has maintained its lead position in initial public offering (IPO) activities in Southeast Asia, recording a market value exceeding RM1.9 trillion in the first half of 2025. Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed said this achievement reflects the strength of the country's capital market and also the business community's confidence in Bursa Malaysia as a partner for long-term growth. "Retail investors' participation remains strong and continues to be a major contributor to the country's equity market. The average daily trading value (ADV) of retail investors remains stable at about RM450 million, in line with pre-COVID-19 levels, as of the middle of this year,' he said in his speech at the 2025 Perak Stock Carnival at Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR) here today. Fad'l added that there are more than 113,000, or eight per cent of active retail investors in Perak, out of a total of 1.4 million in Malaysia, with nearly 6,000 new Central Depository System (CDS) accounts opened as of the middle of this year. He said Perak's potential for further growth in the capital market is very high with its 2.5 million population. "However, despite these impressive figures, our priority is to build retail investors who are knowledgeable, responsible and confident about their investments,' he said. Bursa Malaysia also emphasised the need to raise awareness about the growing issue of investment fraud, with the police reporting more than 2,000 cases in the first quarter of this year, he said. The exchange is intensifying financial literacy programmes such as Sens-Ability, and providing various educational materials for new and experienced investors as a preventive measure, he said. "Bursa Malaysia also introduced investment products like BR Capital, Bursa Gold Dinar, and MyBursa to cater to various investor segments. "We encourage everyone present to leverage the knowledge-sharing sessions and opportunities provided throughout this carnival to make informed and wise investment decisions,' he added. The carnival, held for the first time in Perak, is part of a series of programmes that started in 2022, after previous events in Pahang, Terengganu and Perlis to strengthen investment literacy among the public. Perak's Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development committee chairman Loh Sze Yee and UTAR research and commercialisation division vice-president Prof Dr Zuraidah Abd Manaf were also present at the event. - Bernama

No registration for RM100 cash aid, beware of scams, warns government
Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said the ministry has received complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the cash aid. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: The government has urged the public to be cautious of scams and other fraud attempts over the one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA). Speaking at an event in George Town, Penang, today, deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said the assistance does not require any application or registration whatsoever, Bernama reported. She said the amount will be credited directly into the MyKad of all Malaysians aged 18 and above starting Aug 31. 'We have received numerous inquiries about how to register for the RM100 SARA assistance. There have also been complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the aid. 'These claims are false and dangerous. Do not click on any such links, they are scams. 'I want to stress that there is no need to apply or register for the RM100 cash aid, as it will be automatically credited to the recipients' MyKad,' she said. Lim, who is the MP for Tanjung, reassured the public that there is no cause for concern as everyone aged 18 and above will receive the cash aid. 'Only if they do not receive it after Aug 31 will we take further action and inform them accordingly,' she said. On July 23, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced several major initiatives by the government, including the one-off RM100 cash aid, the postponement of toll rate hikes on 10 highways, and a drop in the price of RON95 fuel to RM1.99 per litre. Lim also said the government is open to considering the inclusion of wet goods such as chicken, meat and fish under SARA. 'We continue to listen to feedback and suggestions regarding the list of items under SARA. There have been proposals to include wet items such as fish, meat and chicken. We will consider expanding the list when the time is right,' she told reporters. She said the government expanded the SARA initiative on May 1 to include household cleaning products, such as laundry detergent, floor cleaner, and dishwashing liquid. These are in addition to the existing categories covering basic food items, medicines, school supplies, and personal hygiene products. Their inclusion increased the number of product categories from 13 to 14, covering 90,000 types of goods. This decision was based on feedback received during the implementation of SARA earlier this year, she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
