The conference, themed 'Women in Peacekeeping: A Global South Perspective,' was organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK). It gathered women peacekeepers from 35 Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) from the Global South to address the changing challenges in peacekeeping and underscore the essential contributions of women in promoting peace and security.
Lacroix elaborated on the dual aspects of involving women in peacekeeping. "On one hand, increasing the number of women leads to more effective peacekeeping efforts, and on the other, it empowers women through their involvement in peacekeeping and political processes, ensuring they are integral to all peacebuilding endeavors," he explained. He stated that this is not an ideological issue but a practical necessity, asserting that full participation of women is essential for the success of peacekeeping missions.
Live Events
During the briefing, alongside Acting Military Adviser of the UN Major General Cheryl Pearce, Lacroix acknowledged the UN's progress in increasing the number of women peacekeepers, while also recognizing that there is still much work to be done. He pointed out ongoing challenges within formed military units, particularly due to limited resources from member states. He also noted the need for more senior female generals to apply for roles such as Force Commander and Deputy Force Commander.
India ranks as the fourth largest contributor of uniformed personnel to

efforts, currently deploying over 5,300 military and police personnel across various missions, including those in Abyei, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, Somalia, South Sudan, and Western Sahara. Notably, India was the pioneer in sending an all-women Formed Police Unit to Liberia back in 2007. More recently, in January 2023, India dispatched an all-women's platoon of peacekeepers to the UN Mission in Abyei, marking the largest deployment of female peacekeepers in recent times.
Furthermore, during its presidency of the UN Security Council in December 2022, India initiated a 'Group of Friends' aimed at enhancing accountability for crimes against peacekeepers. The country also unveiled a new database to track crimes against peacekeepers and monitor the progress in holding those responsible accountable.

It's Govt Money, What's going from our fathers' pockets, Maha Min's Comment Sparks Outrage
1 2 Nagpur/Akola: Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat landed in a fresh controversy after a public statement in Akola on Saturday, where he appeared to downplay accountability over public funds. Speaking at the inauguration of the Social Justice Bhavan, the Sena (Shinde) leader told the audience: "Ask for ₹5, ₹10, or even ₹15 crore for hostels or the social justice mandir. I'll approve it immediately. It's govt money… What's going from our fathers' pockets?" The comment, captured on video and now viral, sparked fierce backlash from opposition parties who accused the minister of displaying a cavalier attitude toward public resources. Eyewitnesses said those in attendance, including BJP MLA Harish Pimpale, NCP MLA Amol Mitkari, and Congress leader Sajid Khan Pathan were stunned into silence by his remark. Shirsat later attempted to clarify, stating the media distorted the context. "I encouraged people to avail funds under govt schemes. I said this money belongs to the people — it's not anyone's personal wealth. It should be used for welfare," he told TOI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo At the Akola event, he stirred discontent by taking a jibe at NCP's Mitkari from the same stage: "Mitkari, you're giving the media good TRP. But don't talk too much, or you'll suffer the same fate as us." This isn't the first time Shirsat courted controversy. On July 11, a video surfaced showing the minister seated beside a partially unzipped bag appearing to contain cash bundles. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut had shared the video on X, tagging Union home minister Amit Shah and demanding action. Shirsat dismissed the allegation, claiming the bag merely contained clothes. The controversy deepens as Shirsat's financial declarations also came under scrutiny. His assets reportedly jumped from ₹3.3 crore in 2019 to ₹35 crore in 2024. The Income Tax Department sought clarification over this nearly tenfold increase. As calls for an apology grow, opposition leaders argue that Shirsat's remarks reflect an alarming disregard for transparency and fiscal responsibility, especially coming from a cabinet minister. Despite CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde urging ministers to avoid controversial statements, political storms continue to cloud the Mahayuti govt's messaging. The 18-time Grand Slam champion was angry after a video of Pearl went viral online, where he accused Barack Obama of dividing America. Her comments have gone viral on social media resulting in mixed reactions from fans worldwide. Martina Navratilova calls out Bruce Pearl over comments on Barack Obama In July 2025, Bruce Pearl appeared on the show Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich on OutKick. On that show, he blamed Barack Obama for supporting Hamas and making racial tensions in the US worse. Martina Navratilova, who often speaks out on social media, reacted to Pearl's statement by calling it 'racist' and compared it to blaming a rape victim. 'This kind of logic is no different from men saying the woman who was raped asked for it because she wore a skirt,' Martina Navratilova posted on X (formerly Twitter). Bruce Pearl, who has coached the Auburn Tigers men's basketball team since 2014, gave an interview last month in July 2025 on a conservative sports show hosted by Dan Dakich. Later, social media platform X widely distributed the clip from that interview. Pearl's remarks startled many people, including Navratilova. The striking comparison she made grabbed attention since it implied that the same kind of thinking that condemns women for being assaulted is being utilized to blame Barack Obama for racism. CM slams award for ‘The Kerala Story'
T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticized the National Film Award jury's decision to honour the controversial film 'The Kerala Story' with two awards, including Best Director, calling it part of a calculated attempt to undermine Kerala's cultural heritage. Speaking at the inauguration of the Kerala Film Policy Conclave in Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan said, "A film that discredits the Kerala community has been deemed worthy of an award. This is not a recognition of art, but of cultural corruption—using cinema as a tool to spread communal hatred." He said such moves reflect a deeper message: "Art is being evaluated using criteria beyond creativity, with the intent of replacing secularism with communalism. The film consciousness of Kerala must rise to counter this assault on our culture, history, and heritage." Vijayan stressed that Malayalam cinema attained greatness by staying rooted in the land, its people, and secular values. "This very foundation is now under attack," he said. He added that the state's secular legacy—admired globally—is now being misrepresented to fuel divisions. "These issues must be addressed seriously within film circles," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Access all TV channels without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo While welcoming the recognition received by some deserving artists at the national level, the CM noted that Malayalam cinema as a whole was not given its due. Highlighting the state's early cinematic legacy, he noted that while many Indian-language films focused on mythology, Malayalam cinema broke new ground with socially relevant themes in its first silent film 'Vigathakumaran' and talkie 'Balan'. Malayalam cinema has always been shaped by progressive, renaissance values and the national movements that fought against colonialism, he said. Vijayan also raised concerns about the increasing portrayal of graphic violence and glorification of drug use in films, warning of their impact on young minds. Actor Mohanlal, also present at the event, said the new film policy should provide direction for Malayalam cinema's growth while ensuring welfare measures for behind-the-scenes workers and encouraging broader participation in production.
