Garbage, dirty toilets greet users at Chennai Park station

Chennai: Uncleared garbage, dirty toilets, and poor maintenance of public amenities greet more than 20,000 commuters who use the Chennai Park suburban railway station, an Amrit Bharat station, daily. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now That the station is located just a few metres from the Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) headquarters in Ripon Building and it is a crucial link between Chennai Central and key locations like Egmore, Tambaram, and Chennai Beach is of no consolation. Commuters say they raised several complaints with the station master, but no action was taken. "The smell is unbearable, especially during peak hours," said D Aravind, a regular user. "Hawkers throw garbage on the Poonamallee High Road entrance. When it rains, the stench becomes worse." "The escalators often don't work, making it hard for senior citizens to climb the stairs," Aravind added. TOI found only three dustbins placed outside the station and a public toilet in an unhygienic condition with water leaking all over the toilet. Vendors at the station said food waste is often thrown on the tracks or in open areas. "We sell snacks and juices to at least 1,000 commuters a day," said S Mohan Kumar, a vendor. "When workers clean, the garbage is kept outside the station and the Corporation removes it only once a week. " When contacted, southern railway officials said redevelopment works were underway at the Park station. Over 50% of the planned improvements have already been completed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The work includes a new two-storey booking office with an executive lounge, new platform shelters, resurfaced flooring, improved waiting areas, better signage, lifts for the elderly and persons with disabilities, CCTVs for security, and modern passenger information systems. A pedestrian walkway is also being built to connect the station to the MRTS and Poonamallee High Road. Officials said the resurfacing of platforms 1A, 1, and 2 is complete, and canopy and telecom upgrades are ongoing. Similar upgrades are being carried out at other stations along the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu line.
