Techie discovers workplace stability still exists and gets confused: 'Are these people stuck or too comfortable? ...'

Time of India28-07-2025
A newly hired software engineer was taken aback when he observed something unexpected after landing his first job—several employees at his new company had been working there for many years, with some even crossing the eight-year mark. In a time where career shifts and job-hopping are often celebrated as the fastest route to better pay and personal advancement, this discovery left him puzzled. For someone just stepping into the corporate world, the idea that so many professionals would remain with a single employer for such extended periods seemed almost unthinkable.
After noticing these long tenures on employees' LinkedIn profiles, the techie turned to Reddit's Developers India community to express his confusion. He noted that multiple engineers, who had also started out as freshers, had chosen to stick around for four, five, and even eight years. While it was evident that these employees were being promoted within the company, he wondered why they weren't moving to different firms despite years of experience. His questions reflected both curiosity and concern: Were they genuinely happy? Were they stuck? Or had they simply grown too used to their environment? Would he eventually end up in the same situation?

The post ignited a lively discussion. One user weighed in by highlighting that switching jobs is inherently risky — it's a calculated move for higher pay, but not without potential downsides. New organizations can bring their own challenges: outdated technologies, poor
work-life balance
, or a difficult colleague. For some, staying in a familiar setting where expectations and people are known quantities might feel safer than jumping into the unknown.

Another Redditor responded with the perspective that time brings perspective. They advised the young engineer to allow life to take its course, suggesting that after ten years, he might find himself answering similar questions from newcomers.
Others emphasized the importance of personal priorities. One user, who had nearly a decade of experience and had been in the same firm for five years, said they valued peace of mind, stability, and health more than promotions or pay raises. They preferred the comfort and predictability of their current role over the strain and uncertainty that often accompany job switches.
Another commenter shared a deeply personal reason for staying put—they had been with their first company for five years primarily due to financial responsibilities at home. Having grown up in a family where income was unstable, their parents were anxious about the idea of quitting a secure job. Even though the project they were working on was unpleasant and involved outdated, undocumented code, they had stayed on for the sake of stability.
Over time, they built enough savings and slowly convinced their family about the need to switch jobs. However, a major obstacle now stood in their way: a 90-day notice period. Despite applying to various companies, many expected immediate joiners or offered lower pay. After repeated disappointments, they were considering quitting without an offer in hand, hoping to navigate the uncertainty independently.
This entire exchange revealed that
long-term employment
isn't necessarily a sign of being ""stuck"—for many, it's a deliberate, often practical choice rooted in deeper personal, financial, or emotional needs.

India's services growth scales 11-moth peak in July on global orders

India's services sector growth scaled an 11-month high in July, driven by an increase in new orders, international sales and output, a private survey showed on Tuesday. The HSBC India Services PMI Business Activity Index touched 60.5 in July, the highest since August 2024 and a shade above 60.4 in June, according to the index compiled by S&P Global. A year earlier, the reading was 60.3. Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) readings above 50 indicate expansion, while those below denote contraction. "At 60.5, the services PMI indicated a strong growth momentum, led by a pickup in new export orders," said Pranjul Bhandari, India chief economist at HSBC. Overseas demand also saw a sharp increase, with firms securing new work from Asia, Canada, Europe, the UAE and the US. The rate of growth in external sales was the second-fastest in a year, after that in May. The finance and insurance sector led in both new orders and business activity, while real estate and business services recorded the slowest expansion. Live Events On average, service providers remained optimistic about future output, supported by expectations of efficiency gains, marketing, tech innovation and a growing online presence. However, Bhandari added that even as optimism regarding the future rose, it remained below the levels seen in the first half of 2025. Employment gains were modest, with July recording the weakest job growth in 15 months. "Fewer than 2% of companies took on additional staff, with the vast majority indicating no change from June," said the survey report. Cost pressures persisted, with firms citing higher expenses on food, freight and labour. On the other hand, charge inflation was above its long-run average, reflecting greater cost burdens and demand strength. "On the price front, both input and output prices rose a tad faster than in June, but this could change going forward as indicated by the recent CPI (Consumer Price Index) and WPI prints," said Bhandari.

Landowners await payout, plan to hold hunger strike

T'puram: Affected landowners along 1.5-km Kodinada-Vazhimukku stretch in Balaramapuram are preparing for an indefinite hunger strike as compensation of nearly Rs 104 crore remains delayed. Despite district administration's approval, 52 landowners are still awaiting their dues. The delay in compensation disbursal stems from procedural requirements at PWD, which has slowed the road development project, officials said. District collector Anu Kumari told TOI that PWD issued administrative sanction for the funds on July 31. She is awaiting confirmation on when the compensation will be transferred into land acquisition officer's (LAO) account before disbursement. Mahesh Paramasivam, an affected landowner, voiced his frustration: "We handed over our land months ago and cleared all formalities but still there's no money in our accounts. Many of us moved out and spent on alternative arrangements. The absence of funds is pushing our families into hardship." Official sources said that Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) sanctioned Rs 104 crore as part of a larger Rs 200-crore package that includes Rs 160 crore for land and Rs 40 crore for structures. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Funds are expected to be released within days, pending submission of the final beneficiary list by collector's office, sources said. Demolition of structures along the stretch, from Vazhimukku towards Balaramapuram, started under a Kunjalumoodu contractor, supervised by Kerala Road Fund Board. Once compensation reaches landowners' accounts, PWD will issue the construction tender, expected in Sept, with work to begin shortly thereafter. The widening project is part of the broader Karamana-Kaliyikkavila highway plan designed to decongest NH-66 and improve connectivity between Neyyattinkara, Parassala and Thiruvananthapuram. The redesigned road will span 30.2m in width, with minimal private land acquisition along a 300-m stretch near Thaikkappalli mosque, where govt land will be used instead.
