Haryana man arrested over Rs 1-crore extortion bid by posing as notorious gangster: Cops
Identified as Sanjay from Sonipat in Haryana, the accused was allegedly trying to pose as gangster Naveen Bali. He was arrested after a handwritten note bearing the businessman's mobile number was found tucked in his pocket, said police.
'During the investigation, it was observed that the accused used a distinct Haryanvi accent. With the help of technical surveillance and manual inputs, a suspect named Sanjay, a native of Rampur Kundal village in Sonipat was zeroed in. A trap was laid, and in a swift and well-coordinated operation, the joint team successfully apprehended the accused…During his cursory search, a handwritten slip containing the mobile number of the businessman was recovered from his possession,' said DCP North West Bhisham Singh.
Shaken after he received threats, the businessman had approached the Adarsh Nagar police station on July 24. He claimed that he had received a phone call from an unknown number on July 3. The caller claimed to be gangster Naveen Bali and demanded that he pay Rs 1 crore in four days or face serious consequences. The businessman initially brushed it off as a prank. On July 20, however, he was again threatened. Realising that this was no joke, the man then turned to the police.
Sanjay had no criminal record but had worked in multiple private firms across Delhi, said officers. Allegedly dissatisfied with his earnings and influenced by crime reports about extortion cases, involving gangsters, he decided to try his hand at extortion. He roped in a business associate of the complainant, who allegedly provided information to make the threats more credible.
'Before he could cause any actual harm, the alert police team successfully foiled his plan and apprehended him. The accused has admitted to making extortion calls, including one to the businessman. Further investigation is in progress to identify any associates or past similar offenses,' said DCP Singh.

The ED is anticipated to request an extension. The ED arrested Chaitanya on July 18, 2024, under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. His arrest coincided with his 38th birthday and followed what the agency described as new evidence in the alleged scam. According to Rizvi, while the ED alleged that Chaitanya received an interest-free loan of Rs 5 crore from a jeweller, documents submitted in February 2025 indicate that the loan was repaid with interest. The ED further claimed that proceeds from the liquor scam were invested in Chaitanya's real estate project. Earlier this year, the ED raided Bhupesh Baghel's residence in connection with the liquor scam. A month later, the CBI conducted searches at his home regarding the Mahadev betting app case. 25 kg ganja seized, one arrested
Patna: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel seized 25 kg ganja valued at Rs 5 lakh at Anugrah Narayan Road station, falling under DDU division of the East Central Railway (ECR) on Saturday. A person, identified as Sanjay Prasad (58), from Rohtas was arrested in connection with the seizure. According to ECR's chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra, on a routine patrol duty, the RPF personnel grew suspicious of Sanjay's movement on platform number 2 at Anugrah Narayan Road station. Upon searching his belongings, the RPF personnel found ganja packed in 24 separate packets concealed within his luggage. Initial investigations revealed that Sanjay was acting as a carrier of the contraband. After interrogation and recording his statement before Dehri on Sone RPF inspector Ram Vilas Ram, he was handed over to the GRP Dehri on Sone for further legal action against him under various sections of the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS) Act, the CPRO said. Mumbai customs arrest passenger smuggling hydroponic weed in fake diplomatic cargo
Mumbai: The Customs at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, arrested one passenger who smuggled 14.738 kg of suspected hydroponic weed (marijuana) worth approximately Rs 14.73 crore in a sealed envelope bearing fake Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) markings and sealed with official MEA tape. Acting on specific intelligence, Customs officials intercepted a passenger who arrived from Bangkok.
