Sir Alex Ferguson's 3am call to Liverpool manager after win says a lot about him
Liverpool will lift the Premier League title in front of their home crowd on Sunday as a memorable campaign rounds to a close. However, Arne Slot's grand occasion may not be as monumental as when Jurgen Klopp first won the crown.
The Reds will face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in their final match of the season, having secured the top spot with games to spare. Similarly, Klopp's 2020 squad finished 18 points ahead of Manchester City, in the process ending a 30-year wait for the league title.
Klopp, 57, clearly understood the significance of his achievement, as evidenced by his early morning call to Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson to share the news. Ferguson, who was already well aware of Liverpool's triumph, recalled the conversation while presenting Klopp with the LMA Manager of the Year award in that same year.
"The winner, Jurgen Klopp. Jurgen, fantastic," Ferguson said on Sky Sports."I speak about Leeds United and 16 years in the Championship, Liverpool 30 years since winning that league is incredible.
"You really thoroughly deserved it. Your performance level of your team was fantastic. Your personality runs right through the whole club. I think it was a marvellous performance.
"I will forgive you for waking me up in the morning at half-past three to tell me you won the league! Thank you. You thoroughly deserved it, well done."
No manager has clinched the LMA Manager of the Year award more times than Ferguson (five), which is why the accolade now bears his name. Klopp scooped up the prestigious award again in 2022 following another successful season with the Reds, securing both the FA Cup and League Cup.
Klopp's dynamic 'rock and roll' football transformed Liverpool and brought the curtain down on an era of underachievement. And his fervent enthusiasm for the game is so infectious that even a character like Ferguson couldn't help but become enthralled.
On paper, the pair might well be considered nemeses. Ferguson symbolises United's golden era and haunted a generation of Liverpool supporters, while Klopp has been pivotal in restoring the Merseysiders to their former glory.
Despite this potential rivalry, Klopp expressed mutual respect after receiving praise from the legendary Red Devils boss. He gratefully acknowledged: "I am absolutely delighted to get this wonderful trophy."
He also shared his admiration for Ferguson: "And Sir Alex Ferguson - and I know it's not 100 per cent appropriate as a Liverpool manager - but I admire him. He was the first British manager I met and we had breakfast together.
"It was long ago and I'm not sure if he remembers it still, but I remember it forever because it was for me in this moment like meeting the Pope, if you want!".
His regard for his senior wasn't so high that he refrained from waking him in the wee hours to share his triumph. Yet, it speaks volumes about the personalities of both men and the mutual respect they have for each other that they were content to be part of this story.

Transfer news live: Liverpool advance in Ekitike talks amid Isak interest, Gyokeres to Arsenal, Jackson to Man United
The summer transfer window rolls on as Premier League clubs and those around Europe look to add to their squads ahead of the 2025/26 season. And the biggest move of the window could be about to happen, with Liverpool starting talks with Newcastle over a potential £120m move for Alexander Isak and enquiring about Hugo Ekitike as they continue to scour the market for a centre-forward. The Reds have also rejected a £58.5m bid from Bayern Munich for Luis Diaz though the Bundesliga champions are said to be preparing a second offer for the winger. Arsenal 's negotiations for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres had stalled due to a difference in valuation and terms, though the Gunners are now in the process of completing a move for the Sweden striker after a breakthrough in talks. It has been similar news regarding Noni Madueke too, with the Chelsea winger undergoing his medical over the weekend. Nottingham Forest are considering legal action against Tottenham Hotspur over what they believe could be an illegal approach for Morgan Gibbs-White. Manchester United continue to focus on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo after securing Matheus Cunha from Wolves, though there remains plenty of focus on outgoings as Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho near the exit door. Arne Slot orchestrated a stunning debut campaign at Anfield, inheriting a stacked squad from Jurgen Klopp before taking English football by storm to seal a record-equalling 20th top-flight crown for the club. The summer months of 2024 hardly shaped the season that followed for Liverpool, and Slot has already proven that he doesn't require overwhelming transfer activity to be successful. Last summer, he saw just two arrivals come through the door in the form of Giorgi Mamardashvili (who was immediately loaned back to Valencia) and Federico Chiesa, who played a total of just 104 minutes in the Premier League. But with Trent Alexander-Arnold heading for the exit and a Premier League title to defend, Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards are expected to engage in a substantial recruitment drive over the coming months. And the early signs are extremely promising for Reds fans, with Jeremy Frimpong having signed from Bayer Leverkusen before Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez followed through the door. Liverpool close on Hugo Ekitike transfer as Newcastle pushed aside after Alexander Isak threat
Both Liverpool and Newcastle have been interested in Hugo Ekitike, but the Eintracht Frankfurt striker wants to move to Anfield and could cost the Reds more than £70million - with Newcastle having been unwilling to deal for Alexander Isak Liverpool are in pole position to sign Hugo Ekitike with the player preferring a move to Anfield over Newcastle. The Reds will have to submit an offer of more than £70m as Eintracht Frankfurt rejected an offer from Newcastle for that sum earlier this week. But Liverpool have told the Bundesliga club that they are ready to bid for the player. Ekitike, 23, is now understood to be favouring a move to Anfield and talks could now intensify when Liverpool submit a bid. The Reds approached Frankfurt on Wednesday to register their interest and later informed the club they are ready to bid. They also have an interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. But they would need to smash the British transfer record to land him and the Magpies are not willing to sell. The Reds are scouring the market for a world-class No 9. Isak, 25, could cost £120m as Liverpool consider spending big with Ekitike set to be over £70m. The Reds currently believe that the Magpies will not sell their star striker this summer - leaving Liverpool to muscle in on a long-time Magpies target. As such, Ekitike has jumped to the front of the queue on Merseyside, with Frankfurt ready to part ways if their valuation of the France striker is met. Despite qualifying for the Champions League, the German club know that selling now will offer them the maximum they can get for the ex-PSG star, and allow them to reinvest. Liverpool want a new front man with Darwin Nunez expected to leave this summer if suitors can be found. Bayern Munich are also expected to bid again for Luis Diaz after a £58.6m bid was rejected by the Reds this week. Liverpool have spent big this summer with the signing of Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100m rising to £116m, while they also paid the German side £29m for Jeremie Frimpong. They've shelled out £40m to land Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and the £30m deal for keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia was agreed last summer. Newcastle meanwhile are desperate to add another striker to partner Isak and having learned that Ekitike wants a move to Merseyside are targeting Brentford's Yoann Wissa. The Bees are determined to keep their centre-forward however on the back of a 19-goal Premier League season last term and particularly with Bryan Mbeumo wanting to join Manchester United - having also decided against a move to Merseyside.

Millwall want to keep best players
Millwall expect Japhet Tanganga and Mihailo Ivanovic to remain at the club this summer and are not looking to sell any of their current players, head coach Alex Neil has players have been linked with moves away from the Championship club but Neil said he did not pay too much attention to the Saville, George Honeyman, Aaron Connolly and Murray Wallace have departed the club so far in the Coburn and Zak Sturge's loan moves from Middlesbrough and Chelsea respectively have been made permanent, while the Lions have also signed goalkeeper Max Crocombe from Burton asked if Tanganga, who made 43 appearances in all competitions for Millwall last season, would still be at the club for their Championship opener at Norwich City on Saturday, 9 August, Neil said "I hope so"."I don't think there's anything at the moment that suggests otherwise for us. "I know there's a lot of speculation, as there always is, whether it be Japhet, or Mihailo [Ivanovic] or anybody else, there's little bits that are doing the rounds," he told BBC Radio London."But we're focused on trying to be the best version of ourselves in terms of trying to retain our best players."We're not naïve. We're not actively looking to sell anyone. We want to grow and build on this season. "But equally, if somebody comes in with offers that are way beyond what we would maybe have on a valuation of a player, then certain decisions may well get made." Sturge a 'really good young and upcoming left-back' Sturge, 21, made five appearances on loan from Chelsea at the back end of last has signed a "long-term" contract and Neil believes he can provide strong competition with Joe Bryan at left-back."He broke in towards the tail end of last year and I think with every game he played he gained confidence, he gained understanding," Neil said. "He's good on the ball, he's athletic, he's got a good manner about him – he's a nice lad – he trains hard."I think what we'll try and do is give him more game exposure and get more game understanding and experience into him. And I think when he puts those bits together then we're hopeful we've got a really good young and upcoming left-back."Millwall signed Coburn in a club-record deal from Boro after the striker formed a strong partnership with Ivanovic and scored five goals in 21 games last season."He's got different qualities and strengths to all the other forwards we've got. He's more of a target, he can take the ball on, he can score a goal, he can run," Neil said. "Our job is to try and help him put his game together in terms of his link-up [play], his timing of his runs, his effectiveness in front of goal, and I think when he does that he'll be a real force to be reckoned with in the Championship."Neil said Millwall planned to make further signings before the season kicks off next warned all players would need to earn their place in the team, regardless of their potential or how much money had been paid to bring them to the club."It's a 50:50 relationship. We will spend a lot of time trying to develop and help you, we'll teach you in terms of tactics and work on your technique. And the other 50% has got to come from them," he added."Nobody gets a free ride. Nobody gets in the team because we've signed you to try to make you better."Your job is to turn up every day, you perform, you try as hard you can. That doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to play well every game, but what we're not going to do is bring you in and, if you play one or two bad games, discard you."
