Kim Cattrall Turned Down Iconic ‘Sex and the City' Role Four Times Because of 'Self-Inflicted Ageism'

Yahoo6 days ago
With And Just Like That… returning to our screens via HBO Max, it feels right that Kim Cattrall should also get back in on the Sex and The City action.
The revival series is currently airing with stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis all reprising the roles that catapulted the group to superstardom in the late '90s and early '00s.

Bar a small cameo in the season two finale, Cattrall has not reteamed with Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte on the streets of New York in the new show and confirmed she won't be appearing in the third installment. Reports of a long-running feud between Parker and Cattrall have dominated Sex and The City headlines for years following the 2008 and 2010 movies.
However, in a new interview with U.K. outlet The Times, Cattrall is revealing a few tidbits about her connection to the iconic character of sex-positive publicist Samantha Jones.
In the feature published Thursday evening, the 69-year-old Liverpool-born star said she turned down the role four times, believing that at 41 she wouldn't be seen by audiences as sexy. 'Self-inflicted ageism,' she told the paper. 'Well, that changed — 40 became sexy. It became, 'Man, let's have more of that.''
The British/Canadian/American actress continued: '[Samantha] wasn't a nymphomaniac — well, some people might have thought she was — but she was just enjoying the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on the appetisers when she was going for the steak.'
'And it was always on her terms — that I always insisted on.'
Despite such a celebrated performance, Cattrall, who has been dating BBC audio engineer Russell Thomas since 2016, added that she is not much like her character in real life. 'I'm the antithesis of her in many ways. I'm a serial monogamist, and then some.'
The six seasons of the show, which ran from 1998 to 2004, saw the women battle tumultuous love lives, sex problems and professional hiccups while strengthening their own friendships. The popularity of the show has only increased since its addition to streaming services like Netflix, which broadcast the pinnacle of nineties NYC glamor to a younger, Gen Z audience.
Cattrall was talking to The Times about the second season of Central Intelligence, a BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds drama series. It follows a retelling of the founding of the CIA in which Cattrall stars opposite Ed Harris and Johnny Flynn.
New episodes of And Just Like That… are dropping weekly on HBO Max and on Sky in the U.K.

‘She cared': Slain ‘American Idol' music supervisor Robin Kaye remembered by peers

Veteran music supervisor Robin Kaye, best known for her lengthy tenure on 'American Idol,' leaves behind a legacy of 'light, kindness, and joy.' Singer-songwriter and former 'Idol' contestant Didi Benami in a Tuesday Instagram story praised Kaye as 'one of the kindest souls I've ever had the privilege of working with' as she mourned the executive's death. Kaye and her husband Tom Deluca are the victims of a double homicide that occurred in their Encino home, Los Angeles police announced Tuesday. They both died at age 70. 'Still in disbelief and trying to make sense of it all. My heart is broken. Some souls leave a light behind even after they're gone,' Benami wrote in another Instagram post shared Wednesday. 'Robin, you are so loved. Always will be. Honoring the light, kindness, and joy you brought into this world. May your memory— and the love you gave —never be forgotten.' Vocal coach Benami, who competed on Season 9 of 'Idol,' was among the musicians and music industry figures paying tribute on social media to Kaye and her contributions. Kaye served as a music supervisor on 'American Idol' from 2009 to 2023 and contributed to nearly 300 episodes during her tenure. In a statement shared with The Times on Tuesday, a spokesperson for 'American Idol' described Kaye as a 'cornerstone of the 'Idol' family' and said the production was 'devastated' by news of her and Deluca's deaths. 'She was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her,' the statement added. Randy Jackson, one of 'American Idol's' original trio of judges, echoed those sentiments on Instagram, writing on Tuesday that Kaye was a 'dear friend to me and so many — judges, executives, contestants, publishers, writers, producers, and artists alike.' He posted a photo of himself with Kaye, noting in his caption that she 'consistently went the extra mile, meticulously ensuring songs were placed and cleared for the show.' 'She was truly one of a kind,' he said. In a call with The Times on Wednesday, longtime 'Idol' music provider Brad Segal highlighted Kaye's sympathetic nature, loyalty and her dedicated work ethic. 'We all hope for that when you meet somebody,' he said. Segal said he met Kaye in the early aughts and had crossed paths with her over the years at other TV productions. He praised Kaye's wealth of 'knowledge of all types of music' and he said she provided a comfortable working experience that helped set the foundation of their years-long collaborations on 'Idol.' Segal told The Times that Kaye was accommodating to her collaborators, ranging from him to the contestants she worked with. Simply, 'she cared.' 'She cared about what she did. She cared about being fair,' Segal said. Kaye and Deluca are believed to have been killed after walking in on a burglary suspect inside their $4.5-million home Thursday, according to LAPD. The suspect — identified by homicide investigators as 22-year-old Encino resident Raymond Boodarian — is believed to have entered the heavily secured home through an unlocked door, police said. After the couple returned home, 'a confrontation ensued, which resulted in the suspect taking their lives,' police said. Their bodies were not discovered until officers responded Monday around 2:30 p.m. to a welfare check in the 4700 block of White Oak Avenue, where they discovered two people inside the home, LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar said early Tuesday. Paramedics responded and declared the pair dead at the scene. Boodarian was apprehended Tuesday without incident by LAPD and FBI task force officers, Los Angeles Police Lt. Guy Golan, said. The killings appeared to be random, Golan said, but investigators were looking for any connection between the suspect and Deluca and Kaye. Times staff writer Richard Winton and deputy editor Joe Serna contributed to this report.

Boka Will Soon Unveil an 8-Seat Omakase Restaurant

Midōsuji, set to open in the coming weeks, is the third sushi restaurant from Boka, following Momotaro in West Loop and Itoko in Lakeview. Named after the gingko-lined street in Osaka, Midōsuji will accommodate up to eight guests per seating, with two seatings a night. Japanese influences like a hand-carved naguri-edge walnut bar and the 'Ō' symbol, which references the work of Osaka-born artist Jiro Yoshihara, have been added to the space. Boka's foray into intimate Japanese dining, driven by seasonality and chef curation, is a big transformation for the previous tenant. Milk Room, founded by star bartender Paul McGee, was a tiny bar where guests enjoyed rare, vintage spirits and custom cocktails. Chef Brian Lockwood will be in charge of Midōsuji's menu. In February, Boka announced its first project with Lockwood. A rep confirms Gingie is on track for a fall inside the former GT Prime space in River North. The Boulder, Colorado, native has worked in some of the world's most esteemed kitchens, including the French Laundry, El Celler De Can Roca, and Eleven Madison Park. At Midōsuji, he'll use classical French techniques on Japanese ingredients to create dishes such as sansho pepper duck and crab salad with daikon and miso egg yolk. There will also be a rotating selection of hand rolls. On the beverage front, expect wines, sakes, and signature cocktails like a tomato water martini, as well as Japanese spirits infused with lemongrass, sesame, and more. Midōsuji is the first change coming to the dining lineup inside the Michigan Avenue hotel this year. Boka took over from Land & Sea Dept. earlier this year as the operator of the CAA's restaurants. That left the fate of several places up in the air. Rooftop restaurant and bar Cindy's, a perennial hot spot offering views of Millennium Park and the lake from the building's 13th floor, has stayed the course — albeit without Top Chef alum Kaleena Bliss at the helm. Game Room, a bar area with pool tables, and the Drawing Room, the second-floor lobby space, have remained open as well. The CAA also still houses Shake Shack and Fairgrounds outposts. However, Cherry Circle Room, a classic wood-paneled American restaurant, closed after the switchover to Boka, and a successor has yet to be announced. Boka's portfolio continues to steadily grow in 2025. In March, the group opened Zarella Pizzeria & Taverna in River North. Boka is no stranger to Japanese cuisine. Beyond its two sushi spots, Boka has run a bar below Momotaro called the Izakaya. Midōsuji, on the second floor of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, 12 S. Michigan Avenue, opening in late summer or early fall.
