Work starts on £23m transformation of bus station

Yahoo10-03-2025
Work has started on a £23m project to modernise Dewsbury bus station.
The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) said the revamp would include an improved waiting area, better real-time information displays and accessible toilets.
The project, which is being delivered in partnership with Kirklees Council, is due to be completed in the summer of 2027.
Tracy Brabin, the mayor of West Yorkshire, said: "Encouraging more people to use the bus helps towards reducing congestion, improving air quality and tackling the climate emergency."
The new-look station is set to feature a "living roof" covered in plants, as well as cycle parking and solar panels.
Funding for the scheme is being provided from the government's Transforming Cities Fund.
WYCA said there would be "minimum disruption" during the first phase of work, with some changes to bus stands within the existing station already in place.
Councillor Moses Crook, the deputy leader of Kirklees Council, said: "These new facilities will make travelling by public transport a more attractive option."
The council said the project would play a key part in a wider Dewsbury Blueprint to increase footfall by making the town centre more attractive and accessible.

More trains from Bradford Interchange to London are planned

MORE trains to and from London are expected to arrive at Bradford Interchange from December, along with extra services between the capital and Bradford Forster Square. The Bradford Interchange to Kings Cross route could get an extra two services per day when the next rail timetable change is introduced later this year, up from the current four-a-day frequency. The service, run by Grand Central, stops at Halifax, Mirfield, Wakefield, Pontefract, and Doncaster. News that there would be extra services on this route was revealed in a report going to West Yorkshire Combined Authority's Transport Committee on Wednesday. The report says: 'Grand Central are hoping to introduce up to two additional trains each way per day on their Bradford Interchange – Halifax – Mirfield – Wakefield – Pontefract –Doncaster – London King's Cross route, as against the current four per day – with the potential to introduce one of the two extra train-pairs sooner than December. 'However, it is not yet known whether their application for the relevant network access has been approved.' If network access is approved, the services will follow an increase in London services to Bradford Forster Square, introduced in May. Platform 0 opened at Bradford Forster Square Station on May 19, and has seen LNER increase the number of direct trains from Bradford to Kings Cross from two a day to seven a day. It followed a £35m investment from Government, and was expected to add £4m a year to Bradford's economy. The report to WYCA's Transport Committee says even more Forster Square/London services are likely in the December timetable change. The report says: 'LNER's Sunday services on the Bradford Forster Square – London King's Cross route are expected to increase, bringing them in line with the significantly improved weekday service.' The December changes will also see train times on the Skipton and Ilkley lines 'adjusted slightly' to accommodate the extra London to Bradford Foster Square LNER trains. Other changes to West Yorkshire rail services in the December timetable include: The introduction of the long-awaited hourly fast train Leeds – Wakefield Westgate – Sheffield, roughly 30 minutes apart from the existing Cross-Country fast service, throughout the day and every day. An additional 9.34pm Sheffield – Huddersfield service on the Penistone line on weekdays. The restoration of the two daily York – Pontefract – Sheffield trains on Sundays. The committee will also hear that there has been a shift back towards office working in recent years. Northern Rail says this shift has led to a nine per cent year-on-year increase in commuter travel.

Upgrade for popular walking route gets under way

Part of a popular walking and cycling route which runs through a West Yorkshire beauty spot is set to be upgraded. Work on the Spen Valley Greenway between Cleckheaton and Liversedge would begin on Monday, according to Kirklees Council. Lights and signage along the 1.5-mile (2km) section of the Greenway would be improved, while the off-road path would be widened and resurfaced. The scheme, funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Kirklees Council and the charity Sustrans, was expected to take six months, a council spokesperson said. The section, which runs from Tesco in Cleckheaton to the Knowler Hill Tunnel in Liversedge, would be closed for the duration of the work, with signposted diversions in place, they added. Moses Crook, deputy leader of Kirklees Council, said: "I'm delighted to see the improvement works on Spen Valley Greenway begin. "This investment is a fantastic boost for the community, enhancing access for everyone whether they're walking, cycling, using a wheelchair or pushing a pram. "It's a great step towards sustainable, inclusive travel and a healthier, more connected future for everyone." Funding secured for county's £2.1bn tram project

A project to bring trams back to West Yorkshire has received a major funding boost from the government. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced that £2.1bn of local transport funding would be allocated to the county. According to West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the grant would mean "spades in the ground" by 2028, with the first trams operating before the mid-2030s. Following the announcement, Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: "It is time for trams. Today is a huge moment for our region." The first phase of the £2.5bn mass transit programme is expected to see the creation of two tram lines. A Leeds line will run from St James's University Hospital through the city centre to the White Rose Centre, while a Bradford Line will connect Bradford and Leeds city centres. Brabin said the funding meant that "other vital projects" could also go ahead, such as new bus stations for Bradford and Wakefield. That would "help us create a better-connected region that works for all", she said. The combined authority is expected to publish its preferred route options for the tram system later this year, with a full public consultation planned for 2026. According to the authority, the scheme would improve local transport for 675,000 people and benefit West Yorkshire's most deprived communities. James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, said: "Delivering a tram system will transform connectivity across our city, and between Leeds and Bradford, bringing jobs and opportunities within easier reach of thousands of local people." Today's announcement is a big leap forward for those who have long campaigned for trams to return to West Yorkshire's streets. But political leaders will understand voters' scepticism after the failure of two previous schemes. The proposed Supertram network was given the go ahead by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in 2001. Early building work got under way, but the project was cancelled by Transport Secretary Alastair Darling in 2005 due to rising costs. A proposed electric bus system with overhead wires, known as New Generation Transport, was then promised - before it was also axed after a planning inspector ruled it was "not in the public interest". The new tram network – being called a mass transit scheme - is a region-wide proposal serving Leeds and Bradford initially, with the ambition to extend it to other towns and cities in West Yorkshire. The money pledged by government today will allow work to start. But with an estimated cost of at least £2.5bn, additional finance will be needed. Meanwhile, the government has also allocated £1.5bn of local transport funding to South Yorkshire. About £530m of the money is expected to go towards renewing the county's tram network, providing a fleet of new vehicles and modernising tram stops. A £350m cash injection is also expected to see the reform of bus services, with franchised buses operating in Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham by 2027, and across the whole of South Yorkshire by 2029. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard called the investment "game-changing" for communities. "It will mean new and better buses, new electric vehicles, integrated ticketing and better information," he said. "It will mean new trams and better tram stops and lays the foundation for extending the tram network. "It will mean that our young people will be able to get to jobs and opportunities; that we can all access services, see friends and family, or go for a day, or a night out, without worrying how to get home."
