‘No one is above the club': Sporting president hits out at Gyokeres over training absence amid Arsenal transfer saga
The 27-year-old Sweden international was due to report for Sporting's training camp in Portugal's southern Algarve region on July 12 after being granted an extended break, according to media reports.
Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, has three years left on his Sporting contract and has been linked with a move to Premier League club Arsenal.
'We're calm. Everything will be resolved with the closing of the market, a heavy fine, and an apology to the group,' Varandas told the Lusa news agency on Saturday.
'If they (interested clubs) don't want to pay fair market value for Viktor, we are very comfortable with that for the next three years.
'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to facilitate the exit, they are not only completely wrong but are also making the player's exit even more complicated.
'No one is above the club's interests, whoever they may be.'
Gyokeres has bagged 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting since his 2023 move from English second-tier club Coventry City, winning the Primeira Liga title in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons.

Barca's Szczesny contract renewal leaving Ter Stegen's future in doubt
Wojciech Szczesny helped Barcelona win the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles last season. (EPA Images pic) BARCELONA : Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract until 2027, the La Liga champions said on Monday. 'The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barca, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context,' wrote the Catalan club in a statement. Szczesny had retired from football when Barcelona signed him in October to replace injured stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was ruled out for most of the season with a ruptured patella tendon. The 35-year-old impressed as Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, with Ter Stegen only returning to the squad in the final weeks of the season. Szczesny's decision to stay and Barca signing goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol earlier in the summer cast doubt over Ter Stegen's future at the club. The German international, 33, commands a high salary at Barcelona and Spanish media report the financially struggling club would like to make savings in that regard. Barca signed Garcia from Espanyol for 26.34 million euros ($31 million) on a six-year deal in June and also still has another goalkeeper in Inaki Pena on the books.

Monaco close in on Fati loan signing from Barca
Ansu Fati made 11 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season without finding the net. (AFP pic) MONACO : Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is expected to join French club Monaco on loan with an option to buy, sources close to the deal said Friday. The 22-year-old Spanish international passed his medical on Friday as Monaco and Barcelona agreed to a season-long loan deal with an €11 million fee (US$12.9 million) to make the move permanent. According to the same source, the contract will not be made official until July 1. Fati burst onto the scene at Barcelona aged 17 but has since failed to live up to initial high expectations. He made 11 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga champions last term, without finding the net. Fati spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Premier League club Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 outings. With his expected arrival, Fati should become Monaco's third signing of the summer. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is slated to sign for the Ligue 1 side, following on from England international Eric Dier. Pogba was also undergoing a medical with the principality side on Friday. The 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner is seeking a club after having his contract terminated by Juventus in March while serving an 18-month suspension for doping. The trio should be officially announced to the press on July 3.

Crystal Palace demoted to Uefa Conference League for multi-club breach
Crystal Palace are expected to appeal the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. (AFP pic) LONDON : Crystal Palace have been demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League by Uefa for a breach of multi-club ownership rules, European football's governing body confirmed on Friday. US businessman John Textor owns a stake in the Eagles and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Under Uefa multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season. Palace qualified for European competition for the first time by winning the FA Cup in May – the club's first ever major trophy. Textor has since agreed to sell his 43% stake in the London club to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. However, that deal is yet to be completed and was struck well after Uefa's deadline of March 1 for multi-club conflicts to be resolved. A decision on Palace's fate had been delayed by a separate case that initially saw Lyon relegated to the second tier of French football due to financial problems. The seven-time French champions won an appeal against that decision on Wednesday after Textor stood aside from the day-to-day running of the club. Palace are expected to appeal the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Parish told Sky Sports: 'We are obviously devastated, most importantly for the supporters. Supporters of all clubs should be devastated for it. 'It is a bad day for football,' Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish declared. 'Most right-minded football fans will see what a terrible injustice this is for the football club and one that I hope someone can remedy because I do believe that nobody in football wants to see this – I don't think Uefa want to see it,' he told Sky Sports. Nottingham Forest, who had qualified for the Conference League by finishing seventh in the Premier League last season, will replace Palace in the Europa League, a Uefa source told AFP.
