Kerala prison officer suspended over remarks on notorious convict
Abdul Sathar I, who was serving as a Deputy Prison Officer at the special sub-jail in Kottarakara, was suspended from the service with immediate effect by the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, according to a government order.
The copy of the order was issued to the media by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
In the order, it was mentioned that the officer, while talking to a Malayalam television channel recently, said that Govindachamy, alias Govindaswamy (41), who escaped from Kannur Central Jail on Friday, had declared much before that he would jump the prison.
The officer claimed that the notorious convict, serving a life term in the sensational 2011 Soumya murder case, had threatened to rape his family members if he escaped from the jail.
During the TV interview, the jail official further said that it was better that Govindachamy be killed and if there was no executioner, he himself was ready to become the hangman.
The order pointed out that at a time when negative reports galore against the department, the statements of the particular officer have put it in more trouble and amounted to demoralise other officials.
The statements were in violation of various provisions of the government officials' service rules and a circular in connection with prison rules.
Stating that the official was already facing probe over some other issues, the order also made it clear that his actions were gross breach of discipline.
Govindachamy escaped from Kannur Central Jail on July 25 between 4.15 am and 6.30 am and was recaptured within city limits at around 9.30 am. He was shifted to Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur on July 26 following the incident.

A 23-year-old woman from Manjakkad near Shornur, was raped and murdered by Govindachamy while travelling on a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shornur on February 1, 2011. He was later convicted in the case. PTI LGK KH

The tech companies were called to explain the mechanisms that allowed such promotions. The ED is also expected to question several celebrities and sportspersons in connection with the same probe. Earlier this month, actors Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, and Rana Daggubati and 26 other celebrities were charged by ED for endorsing betting apps. They have been accused of violating the Public Gambling Act, 1867, by promoting such gambling apps. According to the agency, the platforms under investigation were involved in cheating users and laundering money, with large-scale tax evasion also suspected. American National, Aide Arrested For Attempting To Convert Pune Man To Christianity

An American national and his aide have been arrested in Pimpri city in Pune district for allegedly trying to convert a man to Christianity by promising financial help, police said on Monday. According to the police, the accused have been identified as Schaefer Javin Jacob (41), a resident of California, currently staying near Mukai Chowk in Pune, and Steven Vijay Kadam (46), a resident of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area. Pimpri Chinchwad Police also apprehended a minor for his alleged role in the incident and later handed him over to his parents, news agency PTI reported. As per the complainant, Sunny Bansilal Danani, Jacob and Kadam tried to convert him by visiting his residence on July 27, police said. 'They claimed that converting to Christianity would bring Danani peace, prosperity, and mental well-being. They allegedly told the complainant that Jesus Christ is the only God and that other deities and religions are fictitious," said a police officer. The police state that the two allegedly offered the complainant financial help in exchange for converting to Christianity. Pimpri Police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Foreigners Act on a complaint lodged by Danani. 'Both the accused have been arrested, and the minor involved in the case was handed over to his parents," said the officer. Meanwhile, Jalaluddin Shah alias Chhangur Baba, who is accused of masterminding a large-scale religious conversion racket, is facing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The 78-year-old, who is popularly known as Changur Baba, started as a taweez and gemstone seller, travelling between villages on a bicycle. He reinvented himself as 'Peer Baba' or 'Hazrat Baba Jalaluddin', in 2015, claiming to be a Sufi preacher. A resident of Rehra Ma village in Balrampur, he used his rising influence to target vulnerable individuals, often widowers, with promises of support in exchange for conversion.
